“Subjects/Revisited”, A 50 year scratchboard retrospective by Sally Maxwell at Keller Town Hall

african leopard jpegSally Maxwell, a distinguished, award winning scratchboard artist will be the sole artist July 1 to 29, 2015 at Keller Town Hall. Her art career spans a remarkable 50 years and is an author as well.

In Sally’s own words she says her “… most formative years were spent on the New England coastline, walking the shores and woodlands with her father. He instructed her as to the names and biology of the wildlife, flora and fauna they encountered, and she fell in love with it all.” Almost a half century ago, Sally discovered scratchboard and it became her medium of choice for interpreting what she embraced in nature; along the way developing the means of adding color to the medium.

“In her early years, Sally had followed the footsteps of the majority of wildlife artists and treated her subjects as landscapes with animals in them. Slowly her animals began to dominate. The primary focus is the animal or bird persona or the relationship between several of them. She had rediscovered her design sense and still treats her subject with extreme photorealism, but does it as a minimalist. Her works have impact from both near and far.”

The artist’s work has been featured in Wildlife Art Magazine and Art in America. In 2009, she was inducted into the prestigious Society of Animal Artists and reached Signature membership level in 2012. “Her Award of Excellence in 2014 has solidified her position within the Animal Art field. Her work is being shown in many museum exhibitions as well. 2016 will see the release of a 160 page retrospective book “Subject-Revisited” from Rose Fredrick Press. It follows 50 years of Sally’s work in scratchboard medium.”

The exhibit can viewed Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. Meet Sally at a reception in her honor on Thursday, July 9, 2015 from 7 to 9 pm. This exhibit is free and suitable for all ages.

Graham Hobart
was born and raised in what is now Zimbabwe. He is known for the unique illustrative style of photography he has titled “In a Different Light“.

As a young man, Graham would often travel by bicycle to remote parts of Africa and encounter a wide variety of wildlife very close-up. He would be gone for weeks at a time, exploring as far as his legs and determination would take him. Well before he photographed wildlife, he was drawing and sculpting them.

Graham Hobart draws on more than 25 years of experience as a professional photographer. More recently he has turned his attention to the superb qualities of super telephoto Infrared Photography which has challenges that few photographers dare to master.   His Africa wildlife images have been shown from the National Geographic London to the the Cultural Heritage Museum in Tanzania.
