Acrylic WC Mixed Media Flower Workshop with Sharon Giles May 13

Saturday, May 13 10am – 3pm (one hour for lunch)

Create beautiful abstract flowers!

Start loosely and playfully with transparent watermedia, then create a whimsical design with negative painting and your favorite mark-making tools.

Watermedia – bring your choice of liquid acrylics, acrylic inks, Golden High Flow acrylics,  tube watercolors (sorry, pans are too wimpy) and/or alcohol inks (the last is not permanent).

Bring one tube of white acrylic. (Instructor will bring other colors)

Your choice of mark-making tools – could be acrylic markers, regular markers (not usually permanent), sharpies (not permanent), colored pencils, watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, gelatos or gel sticks (not permanent), graphite pencils, pastel sticks or pencils, oil pastels, etc. Bring what you have but I recommend purchasing a white sharpie.

Bring one 11×14 or 12×12 canvas or canvas board. Instructor will also supply one small sheet of yupo. You can also bring a small watercolor or acrylic painting you want to transform.

Other tools: Brushes in different sizes, water container, paper towels, and apron. Droppers or pipettes, and dipping pen or calligraphy pen if you have one.

For inspiration, bring pictures of flowers, vases and simple patterns. The instructor will also bring ideas for patterns and extra supplies.

Register by emailing sharongiles@gmail.com or calling 972-570-7565 Cost: $45 ($40 for IAA members).

Southwestern Watercolor Society 2016 53rd Members Exhibition

Southwestern Watercolor Society is pleased to announce it’s 53rd Annual Member Exhibition beginning August 31 through September26, 2016 to be held at the Eisemann Center on the Mezzanine level, accessible by elevator, 2351 Performance Dr. Richardson, TX. Viewing hours are 10:00AM to 6:00PM, Mondays through Saturdays.  The awards ceremony and reception is Sunday, September 18th. from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the Eisemann Center.

For more about SWS, see the website: http://swswatercolor.org.

The exhibition will be a display of paintings by 81 local and national artists in water media (watercolor, acrylic, etc.), selected from 259 that were entered. The selections were made by our Juror, Stan Miller. After the paintings are hung, Stan will view them in person, and select those that will receive special awards and recognition. Artists whose work appears in five approved art exhibitions are awarded the special achievement of “Signature Membership” in SWS, recognized by adding the initials to their signatures on their paintings. Nine SWS members will receive their signature status this year.

Stan Miller is this year’s juror.  Stan Miller has been a professional painter in watercolor and egg tempera for more than thirty years. He has exhibited his paintings in numerous exhibitions, galleries and museums. A signature member of the American Watercolor Society as well as an AWS award winner, Stan also teaches workshops and classes in Spokane, Washington and all over the US and around the world.

SWS has a long and rich history. The first Society organizational meetings for SWS were held in 1963. The first official meeting was held in January 1964 at N.R. Crozier Tech high school in downtown Dallas. The Society was granted a charter by the State of Texas in May of 1964.

It all started with Edgar Whitney and Naomi Brotherton. Naomi, charter SWS member, studied with Ed Whitney on several of his New England station wagon tours. The first conversation about forming the Society took place at a one of these Ed Whitney classes. It was at an organization meeting in December of 1963. Over 50 people attended the first organizational meeting.

53 years later SWS has grown to over 400 members to be one of the largest and notable watercolor societies in the nation. Each year SWS honors Edgar Whitney with the SWS Membership Show / Edgar A. Whitney Award for Transparent Watercolor and Naomi Brotherton with the “Naomi Brotherton Award, Best of Show” for the top winner, instituted last year. Naomi at 96 still is active in SWS and teaches classes in her Dallas studio. For more information visit our website at www.SWSWatercolor.org or look for us on FaceBook.

Donna Zagotta AWS, NWS
Adding the “You” Factor to Paintings
Sept 28-Oct 1st, 2015
Donna Zagotta will teach an Adding the “You” Factor to Paintings workshop at Artists’ Showplace Gallery.
The emphasis of this lively workshop is getting past the “explanation factor” and zeroing in on the most important factor of all in your work-YOU!
You will learn how to create and rely on a personal, rather than a rule-based approach to composition, design, and the formal elements – a key ingredient in turning everyday subjects into imaginative and expressive paintings.
Each day’s lesson will focus on an individual aspect for getting there: seeing and personalizing shapes, abstract understructures, non-representational value patterns, creative color schemes and more.

It’s Never Too Late to Join SWA for 2015!

Our membership for SWA runs on a calendar year January-December. It is never too late to pay dues for 2015, as it will be accepted year round. You can mail your payment or pay online with pay pal through our website. Http://www.SWAwatercolor.com Please note, however, when you join for 2015 you are entitled to membership perks for the 2015 year.

Our annual Membership Exhibition falls close to the time we are taking up dues for 2016. Every year it confuses folks. To help clarify what seems to be overlapping dues periods, here is brief schedule for our second half of the 2015 year. We will resume monthly meetings in September and continue for October and November. In December we have a holiday party which includes spouses/significant others.

Your 2015 dues also entitles you to also participate in the Membership Exhibition which should receive excellent viewing at the Fort Worth Community Art Center. Doug Walton Workshop June 5-7

TAGlogo2013A few spaces left! Sponsored by the Trinity Arts Guild

Doug is just back from his adventures in eapal and it promises to be a great workshop.

Location: Trinity Arts Guild gallery, Bedford Boys Ranch
2819 R. D. Hurt Pkwy.
Bedford, TX 76095-0671
(817) 283-1422

Doug Walton

June 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2015  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Doug Walton’s Water Media workshop this coming June will be an experience that should not be missed. Many of our members, especially those from the Arlington area, are familiar with his philosophical and unique techniques. It is said that he teaches creativity.  His abstracts that often include a hint of realism are amazing to behold. He will drive out from his Ruston, LA home to spend 3 days with us, bringing a startling array of latex house paints and an ever evolving crea- tive bent to his work. Though he has seen a few birthdays and might be expected to be settling in on what has been his array of successes, he is still out to teach what painting should be in the 21st century and encourages leaving the 20th century where it belongs. If you cannot make all three days of the workshop, you may pay (on availability) a per day fee. See the Web site for details.

Price for TAG members is $225.00 and for non-members $275.00 (one day $80/$110). Register
