SWS has a long and rich history. The first Society organizational meetings for SWS were held in 1963. The first official meeting was held in January 1964 at N.R. Crozier Tech high school in downtown Dallas. The Society was granted a charter by the State of Texas in May of 1964.

It all started with the influence of Edgar Whitney and Naomi Brotherton. Naomi, charter SWS member, studied with Ed Whitney on several of his New England station wagon tours. Naomi convinced Ed Whitney to stop in Dallas on his way to the west coast on tour. While in Dallas he presented his book, “Watercolor, the How’s and Whys.”

The first conversation about forming the Society took place at a one of these Ed Whitney classes. It was the Whitney class that formed the invitation for an organization meeting in December of 1963. Over 50 people attended the first organizational meeting.

54 years later SWS has grown to over 400 members to be one of the largest and notable watercolor societies in the nation. Each year SWS honors Edgar Whitney with the SWS Membership Show / Edgar A. Whitney Award for Transparent Watercolor and Naomi Brotherton with the “Naomi Brotherton Award, Best of Show” for the top winner, instituted last year. Naomi at 96 still is active in SWS and teaches classes in her Dallas studio.

Start loosely and playfully with transparent watermedia, then create a whimsical design with negative painting and your favorite mark-making tools.

Supplies:

Watermedia – bring your choice of liquid acrylics, acrylic inks, Golden High Flow acrylics,  tube watercolors (sorry, pans are too wimpy) and/or alcohol inks (the last is not permanent).

Your choice of mark-making tools – could be acrylic markers, regular markers (not usually permanent), sharpies (not permanent), colored pencils, watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, gelatos or gel sticks (not permanent), graphite pencils, pastel sticks or pencils, oil pastels, etc. Bring what you have but I recommend purchasing a white sharpie.

Bring one 11×14 or 12×12 canvas or canvas board. Instructor will also supply one small sheet of yupo. You can also bring a small watercolor or acrylic painting you want to transform.

Instructor: Ameda Holmes
REGISTER

Ameda Holmes has been knitting and working with yarn since she was 5 years old.  Her grandmother was a true master and taught her how to design as well as create.  In 1985 she decided that natural fibers were the way to go and she learned to spin her own yarn.  For the three Thursday evenings in May she will be teaching spinning and knitting.  The first night will be devoted to spinning. Attendees will be introduced to the basics of spinning and will receive a spindle and fiber to work with.  The next two nights will be devoted to the basics of knitting.  Everyone will be making simple slippers. Needles and yarn will be provided.

Instructor: Beverly Boren

Bev Boren was born and raised in Texas and now resides in Trophy Club, Texas with her husband Ben.  She is a signature member of the Outdoor Painters Society and the Southwestern Watercolor Society.  She is also a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and American Watercolor Society.

Her work is primarily the result of her need to paint.  Inspiration can come at any time and in any place.  She is not confined to one subject area.  She loves  to paint a variety of subject matter as well as working in various mediums.  Bev’s paintings are created with things that capture her eye whether it’s a still life, landscape, or capturing a person’s personality.  Painting is her way of connecting with the world and the people around her and sharing those experiences along the way.

In her words “Trying to describe or explain my efforts at painting or drawing seems like a futile effort.  After all, I want my work to express itself without the necessity of words.  My best hope is that my work will stand simply on it’s own, and find a connection with viewers where words fail”.  Her website: http://bevboren.com/

Art Exhibit: Fresh Paint | Hailey Herrera

Screen Shot 2017-02-16 at 12.33.00 PM

Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, in this exhibit of abstract watermedia paintings Hailey Herrera integrates freeform lines and shapes; finding her inspiration from nature and her surroundings. Unless she has a specific theme in mind, she begins with some calligraphic lines without a preconceived idea of result. In the process of interplaying lines and shapes spontaneously, an idea emerges and the painting reveals something new to which her intuition and emotion responds. This spontaneous decision process leads to a fascinating and unconventional result.

The work displayed at Elm Street Studio is an ongoing study of experimentation in watermedia abstract painting.  Please join us at Elm Street Studio in Keller, TX for a complimentary reception and meet the artist on Friday, March 24 from 6 to 8 pm. For more information and to see images of Herrera’s work, please visit www.ElmStreetStudioKeller.com. Fresh Paint: Watermedia Abstracts by Hailey Herrera will be on display through April 27, 2017.

Patsy Lindamood Wildlife Art Exhibit at the West Irving Library

lindamood4

Irving Art Association is honored to present the Patsy Lindamood Wildlife Art Exhibit at the West Irving Library Dec. 4, 2016 through Jan. 8, 2017.The Library is located at 4444 W. Rochelle in Irving (near the intersection of Rochelle & Esters.)

Patsy is an IAA member and frequent winner in IAA’s Texas & Neighbors and Animal Art exhibits. The exhibit showcases her wildlife art but she also draws and paints domestic animals, landscape art, and portraits. Her latest series is on ranch and rodeo life.

Learning from from nationally and internationally recognized pastelists and wildlife artists, Patsy has emerged with a style uniquely her own, marked by strong, colorful, yet infinitely detailed compositions in a representational style.  She has become a nationally award winning artist in her own right.

lindamood1

Her work derives from research and observation of creatures in their environments, in the wild whenever possible. Trips to state and national parks have provided great adventure and abundant inspiration. Wildlife also regularly visit her property in Huntsville, and it is not unusual to pass deer or roadrunners on her weekday routes.

Working in pastel, graphite, colored pencil, and watercolor or watercolor pencil, Lindamood’s paintings are life-size, bold with color, rich with texture, and bursting with presence. She frequently paints on cradled artist boards, Pastelboard or Mylar.

For more about Patsy and her art, see her website at  http://www.lindamoodfineart.com

Artist Judy Mason at the VAST November 3rd Meeting

judy-mason-vast-nov-2016

You are invited to a presentation by Artist Judy Mason at the VAST November Meeting November 3rd, from 7 – 9 p.m., at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory St, Denton, TX.

Judy Mason’s Artist Statement: “It is my belief and experience that the most intriguing avenues of understanding are introduced by chance. There is an evolution of happenings meant to create something unique. As our artwork evolves, so does the individuality of the artist. Only when the artist decides to “rest” does his work become stale.

I find some repetition within my artwork to be fun, but too much of it quickly becomes predictable. That is where the danger lies. We, as artists, are performers and must constantly entertain ourselves and the audience.

Sharing that which is felt is an obligation, and hopefully, it can hold the attention of someone long enough to get that feeling transmitted. Then that work of art is considered successfully placed.”

Judy Mason’s artwork is shown in the Center for Contemporary Art in Abilene, Texas, and the Firehouse Art Gallery in Weatherford, Texas.

To find out more about Judy, see: www.judymasoneldridge.com

The presentation is free for VAST Members; $3 for guests. vastarts.org

Sharon Serrago demo for Society of Watercolor Artists Oct. 17

sharonserragothecavern

Sharon Serrago is a local area artist, teaching weekly watercolor and acrylic classes at her studio in Richardson, TX. As her teaching strength lies in design and color theory, her classes always focus on strong fundamentals. Sharon’s ability to quickly spot problem areas in paintings and her adeptness at offering solutions has caught the eye of many art clubs and organizations who have subsequently invited her to present demonstrations, offer critiques of members’ works, and judge competitions.

A signature member of SWS, Sharon has been accepted into numerous exhibitions including Western Federation WS, Alabama WS, Georgia WS, Illinois WS, Irving WS, Houston WS, and several others.

An entrepreneur with her hand in several businesses, Sharon’s first love is her art. While she frequently paints realistically, she is most at home when painting abstracts. Her styles are as diverse as her talents, all of which goes into making her one of Dallas’ interesting artists. Sharon’s work can be seen on her website: www.serrago.com

“The Art of BUGS” a presentation by Artist Walt Davis at the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) May Meeting

Walt Davis

Please join VAST on Thursday, May 5th from 7-9 p.m. for a presentation entitled “The Art of BUGS” by watercolor artist Walt Davis .

During the presentation, Walt will work on a half-sheet demo of a large scale insect. Walt states that he is four years into a series of paintings celebrating the surprising world just small enough to escape our attention but full of beautiful and unexpected colors and shapes. It is the world at our feet that goes largely unnoticed. He will include plenty of sketches and preliminary drawings to illustrate his method of working as well as the three paintings that made it into American Watercolor Society annual shows, one of which won an award.

Walt Davis is a signature member, life member, and past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. He is also a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and his painting “Katy-did, Katy-didn’t” won their Margery Soroka Memorial Award in 2012. He was curator of exhibits at the Dallas Museum of Natural History for fifteen years creating wildlife dioramas and collaborating with Dallas muralists Olin Travis and Granville Bruce.

Walt’s work has been exhibited at Eastfield College Gallery, Bath House Cultural Center (Dallas), Panhandle Art Center, (Amarillo), Old Jail Art Museum (Mount Vernon), Brownsville Heritage Complex, Dallas Museum of Nature and Science, and San Angelo Art Museum.

Walt often paints plein air and enjoys working in different scales from miniatures to full sheet watercolors. He says the challenge for the watercolorist is to choreograph a delicate dance between art and nature coaxing the fundamental truth of one to illuminate the fundamental truth of the other.

To find out more about Walt, see: http://waltdavisart.com/

The presentation takes place at the Patterson – Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory St, Denton, TX 76201.

The presentation is Free for VAST Members, and $3 for non-members.http://vastarts.org
