About the Curators: JuJu Bartush
Juju Bartush Reeves
A classically-trained artist with a degree in fine arts, Juju crosses her figurative artist style with a contemporary illustrative flavor. Her abstract line of paintings features high-contrast textures to shape the mood of each piece and a unique collection of shapes to create their form. By combining different types of paint and media, Juju portrays the many different levels of our existence through color and texture. She has a special talent for capturing human images and finds herself constantly observing how shadows define the facial features of those around her.

Juju’s goal for the observer of her art is to draw them into the painting, either through the eyes or the energy that the artwork creates. She aspires to capture that moment in time that takes you to the place where you can escape for those few moments in time, for it is those moments that create lasting memories.

Her newest channel of creativity is a contemporary illustrative style that uses high intensity colors to generate brilliance, energy and contrast. And, Juju has recently branched out to specialize in commissioned idealized portraits.

About the Curators: Lina Rincon
My name is Lina Rincon-Hoover. I was born in Colombia and moved to the U.S. in 1999. After living in Tampa, Florida for the first 13 years, I relocated to Frisco in 2012 with my husband and daughter.

I hold a B.A. in Art from Universidad Autonoma del Caribe and certification in Art Instruction from Fundacion Universitaria Bellas Artes, both in Colombia. I also hold a certification in Digital Photography from the University of South Florida. In addition to my formal education, I have taken multiple classes and seminars focused on Art and have exhibited my works in both the U.S. and abroad.

I happily spend many hours in front of the easel in order to bring my paintings to life. I enjoy the lengthy time I spend focusing on the most basic details and being able to see the transformation from concept and simple brushstrokes into a finished painting.

“Your Definition of Gender in Society” – TVAA Gallery call for art

Artists have been addressing through artwork the ideology and issues of the definition of gender especially as the women’s movement gained momentum in the 1960’s, Gay rights in the 2000’s, and has gained international acknowledgment with the MeToo Movement. We have been challenged in what is gender, how do we define our roles, and what is accepted and rejected in society. How do you define gender, how would you challenge acceptance, can art address the negativity and positive sides of the entire issue, and how creative can you be to address the issues or definition of gender. What does gender look like at the personal, communal, and global level? In the first half of the twentieth century, artists such as Claede Cahun and Frida Kahlo made self-portraits that emphasize the fluidity of gender, refusing to adhere to statically masculine or feminine characteristics. Be open minded and creative with this call for art and make the most of the challenge. Define in your own way with color, shape, or texture!

This is an invitation to explore the meaning that connects with you and your art work, and then share it with others.  This is open to members and non-members of TVAA (Texas Visual Artists Association) with ribbons being awarded to Best of Show, 1st, 2nd 3rd place, and honorable mention.  Cash awards for Best in Show and 1st place!

TVAA presents Signs of the Unseen May 7 – June 1; Reception May 12

“Signs of the Unseen” TVAA Downtown Gallery Grand Reopening

Exhibit Open to the Public: May 7th– June 1st, Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm

Reception: Saturday, May 12th, 6-9pm

Signs of the Unseen: Illuminating the Divine Every Day Life. Art has the ability to transform the mundane of everyday life into a greater awareness of the beauty of life and connection to something both within and beyond ourselves. Whether it be seen in the beauty of creation; as in nature and the patterns of life, the awakening presence to a divinity more closely personalized to Self, a Universal connection to the source of life; or a religious personification of God or Goddess. We have the opportunity to bear witness to signs of the unseen in every day life. Open to all spiritual, religious, scientific, or agnostic walks in celebration of each artist’s unique.  http://tvaa.org

About the Curator:

Lauren Dickinson

“Art has woven a beautiful tapestry throughout my life. What started as sketching portraits for fun led to taking all the art classes I could as electives in high school. Little did I know that I was opening a previously dormant fountain of creativity that carried me through high school and into art college for a number of semesters. Due to external circumstances and life events, I was unable to complete my studies at that school, although I didn’t let it stop me entirely. I received acceptance into every program I continued to apply to, including the prestigious Cornish College of Arts Visual Arts program in Seattle. Major family events hit; life still had other plans for me at the time, and I had to let go of my dream – temporarily, as life would have it.

It has been a journey of picking up the brush again throughout the years. Inspired by love and the profound healing process I was experiencing through my healing arts career, one summer day I let go of all expectation, and just started again. Paint started randomly covering all of my old attempts at art throughout the years. I stayed with it, and unbeknownst to me at the time, I was discovering the freedom of expression of abstract art. The wellspring of creativity, now reactivated, has overflowed onto the canvas of my life with fluidity, vibrant color and a rediscovered passion. Finally life has what it had been missing for so many years – a return to Art, where my heart was hiding; and could finally come out again. Such is the promise of pursuing what is deepest in our hearts – divine love.

The TVAA Downtown Gallery invites all artists who have joined TVAA during 2015 – 2017 to show their work in the 2018 New Members Exhibition. There is no theme for this show, and all media is welcome.

About the Curator: Leon Robertson is a self-taught artist that works with primarily pen

50 Years of Art & Love: the Peggy Nichols Collection at TVAA Downtown Gallery

TVAA Downtown Gallery ~ Art Exhibition

50 Years of Art & Love –
The Peggy Nichols Collection
October 26 – November 16, 2017
About the Show:
For over 50 years, Peggy Nichols collected art to adorn the walls of her Dallas home. For her, it was never just about filling a void on a wall; it was about filling her heart with love and mind with joy. Art was a way to lift her spirits and cope with the realities of life after a hard day of work. Art was her escape. It was an emotional investment. A way to get lost in the imagination and worlds of so many artists that she adopted as her extended family. Her collection, which is comprised of mostly contemporary artists and photographers, unveils incredible moments in history and the risks artists take pursuing their craft. Works from these national and internationally acclaimed artists can be found in museums and galleries around the world. At 76, Peggy Nichols wants to share her collection with others in hopes that they too may see the love and joy that has filled her heart and mind for so many years. All work in this exhibition will be available for purchase.

Reception: November 4th, 2PM – 4PM

Are there ordinary objects at home or work which, by way of painting, photography, drawing, etc. that could be afforded a leap into art? Make the revisioning of commonplace objects worthy of display on a wall or a pedestal. Work in all media will be considered.

About the Curator: Henry Biber was educated as a Psychologist and is an experienced psychotherapist. There are many sides to these fabulous creatures that this collection of works will explore! The curator, Kelly E. Marra, has been dreaming of this show with visions of lionesses, portraits, abstracts and more with a tribal vibe.

About the Curator: Kelly E. Marra is an Artist, from the North Texas Area, that loves to explore and create with a variety of mediums. She exploits the versatility of acrylic paint, and incorporates polymer clay, fabric, and jewelry design into her mixed media pieces. She is a member of The Cove Gallery in McKinney, Texas and is inspired to nurture the relationship between local artists and their communities.

TVAA’s Black & Light call for entries

TVAA Downtown Gallery Plaza of the Americas – Suite G-207 700 N Pearl PO Box 347 Dallas, Texas 75201 tvaagallerydallas@gmail.com

Black & Light celebrates the beauty of darkness, light, and the contrasts they create.

These universal opposites reveal each other’s beauty, such as the silhouettes and dramatic lighting in a photograph, the abstractions and illusions of light in a painted work, and even literal light manipulation in a three dimensional work. Artists are invited to submit work in any medium to explore and reveal the beauty of black, light, shadow, and luminosity through personal interpretation. The use of black in artwork is highly encouraged, though not required. The uses of LEDs and other physical sources of light in a piece are also welcome. All media welcome.

TVAA’s 2017 Abstract Redacted Reception May 7

May-TVAAA-Gallery-Poster1-471x600

May 1 – 31, 2017
Reception Sunday, May 7, 2-4 pm

The website for the TATE informs us that abstract ” means to separate or withdraw something from something else. Abstract art is art which is not representational, it could be based on a subject or may have no source at all in the external world.”

When sensitive information is removed or obscured from a document before it is published, it is said to have been redacted. In writing, this is a form of editing.

In this exhibit, we hope to show your abstract work with some redaction. You are the creator and must decide how that occurs. Will you use text which you conceal? Will you have an area in your piece that has had some content removed? Will a sculpture obviously show us a missing part? Perhaps the way you portray this idea will be more subjective. Perhaps it will be very literal. Subtle or not, you decide! All media welcome.

TVAA’s Earth Day Exhibit

2017 Earth Day Poster

April 3 – 28, 2017
Reception Sunday, April 22, 2-4 pm

Twenty million Americans took to the streets on April 22, 1970 to protest the deterioration of their environment due to the ravages of the industrial revolution. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. By 1990, Earth Day was a global event, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries. Today, in spite of climate change deniers and well-funded lobbyists, Earth Day has become the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year, and a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

The TVAA Gallery once again celebrates Earth Day this April with an exhibit of art inspired by our concern for environmental issues.

Although the French refer to still life as “nature morte” meaning “dead life,” the art form generally means a collection of still objects that had been alive, such as fruit, cut flowers or dead animals, thus “still life.” Over the centuries this genre has evolved to include most any collection of inanimate objects, whether or not portrayed realistically.  It is common for artists to learn still life drawing or painting early on in their studies. So whether it is an artwork from your past or a new project, bring out your still life paintings or drawings and celebrate this art form that has endured throughout history.

Frida Kahlo – Without Boundaries

November  1 – 30, 2016

Reception Nov. 6, 2-4pm

Frida Kahlo continues to be a popular cult figure, more than sixty years after her death. Kahlo overcame much physical suffering as a young woman, and later  struggled personally and artistically to find her way as an artist in a male-dominated culture.

Research into her life reveals her strong interest in politics, art, and animals, her rejection of society’s values, and her magnetic bond to her husband, artist Diego Rivera.

Those wishing to explore this fascinating and surprising artist will find a wealth of information on the Internet. Images of her paintings are also available to those interested in seeing her extraordinarily personal and autobiographical creations.

For this show we are requesting art about, influenced by, or in the style of Frida Kahlo. All media welcomed. Artists are invited to submit up to three entries (jpgs at 72 dpi and no longer than 1800 pixels on longest side) to Curator Mary Ann Turner by October 20th at macavari@netscape.com.
