The 2016 897 Square exhibition marks Gallery 75102’s sixth annual juried competition, featuring art ists who live and/or work in Tarrant County. The title re fers to the U.S. Census Bureau’s calculation that Tarrant County has a total area of 897 square miles (2,324 km2), of which 863 square miles (2,236 km2) is land and 34 square miles (88 km2) (3.80%) is water.
This year’s artists were selected by guest juror Stephen Lapthisophon, and include: Chis Cunningham, Eric Hess, Alex Kang, James Lassen, John Rossman, Olivia Themudo, and Fabiola Valenzuela.

Call to Artists – Annual Juried Competition
Dealine: May 8th by midnight
The 2016 summer show, 897 Square, is open to all artists living in, working in, Or otherwise affiliated with Tarrant County. All visual media are eligible, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation and video (artist must supply all required electronic equipment). Maximum size for 2D works cannot exceed 5 ft x 5 ft, while 3D must be able to fit through a standardsSized doorway. Each artist can submit up to 3 pieces that must be ready to hang or display.
The exhibition is scheduled for June 9th, 2016 to July 31st, 2016. The opening reception is on Thursday, June 9th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Shirley Reece–Hughes, and include: Heather Braman, Jean Fernandes,
Holly Gray, Jennifer Hart, Brandon Hayman, Alex Kang, Danielle Khoury,
Seth Lawrence, Sandra Morante, Gary Norman, Salvatore Pacilio, Gary
Reams, and Raul Rodriguez.
About the Jurors:
Assistant Professor, UT Arlington Art + Art History Department
Sed rick Huckaby obtained his bachelor’s in fine arts from Boston
University and a master’s of fine arts from Yale University. Upon
graduation, Huckaby was the recipient of numerous awards and honors,
including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Joan Mitchell Foundation
Grant. With funds from the Alice Kimble English Traveling Fellowship,
Huckaby was able to travel the U.S. and abroad studying the works of
Henry Tanner. He was also a Provincetown Fellow. The Art Institute of
Chicago, Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Whitney Museum of
American Art are among the institutions that have acquired his work.
Huckaby currently lives in Fort Worth. He is married to artist Leticia
Huckaby and has two children.
Associate Curator, Amon Carter Museum of American Art
Shirley Reece-Hughes received her PhD in art history from the University
of Kansas where she was awarded a Henry Luce Foundation Grant for
her dissertation, David Bates: Southern Culture, Places and Memories
Through the Eyes of an Expressionist. In 2007, Dr. Reece-Hughes was the
recipient of the Davidson Family Fellowship at the Amon Carter. She is
currently co-organizing an exhibition to open in fall of 2016 entitled, Wild
Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art. In 2012, she
began curating a gallery devoted solely to Texas art that is rotated on an
annual basis. The first exhibition was Texas Regionalism, followed by Lone
Star Portraits, and the next installation, Texas Folk Art will open in
September of this year. Her other curatorial projects have included Will
Barnet: Relationships, Intimate and Abstract, 7935– 7965 and The Allure of
Paper: Watercolors and Drawings from the Collection, which Reece-Hughes
created for the museum’s 50th anniversary celebration.
