2017 Cedars Open Studios

Saturday, November 18, 2017

10 am – 6 pm

https://www.facebook.com/events/300191423781359/

Now in our 15th year, cedars open studios is the largest event of the year in The Cedars. The Cedars, Dallas, Texas has long been home to a diverse group of Dallas painters, photographers, sculptors and musicians who have contributed to the deep and gritty history of the neighborhood.

Watch live demos and meet renowned artists such as Bowman Glass / Artists in Glass, Albert Scherbarth, Rick Maxwell and TONY COLLINS art + home. Visit the growing number of galleries including Ro2 Art, Janette Kennedy Gallery and Cedars Art House.

Special exhibits this year include The Museum of Street Culture “Looking for Home” featuring the photography by Mary Ellen Mark. The installation in Encore Park Dallas traces the life of Tiny, a 13-year-old runaway teen when Mark first encountered her in Seattle, Washington, in 1983, while Mark was working on a story for Life Magazine.

Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park exhibit “Neighborhoods We Called Home,” explores the historic neighborhoods of Dallas that served as strong, supportive communities for African American, Hispanic, and Jewish Dallasites from the early 1900s and beyond.

The evening will culminate with the annual tradition “The Decorating of the Tree” by Bowman Glass / Artists in Glass followed by special events at Buzzworks and the newly reopened Longhorn Ballroom!

Bike Friendly Cedars will lead a pedal powered tour of the studios and Lime Bike will have bikes available at a special rate for visitors.

If you’ve never been to the Cedars, now is a great chance to learn about the neighborhood – itself an evolving work of art.

McKinney Art Studio Tour Nov. 11 & 12

http://mckinneyartstudiotour.com/

The 2017 two-day MAST event will be Saturday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, November 12, from noon until 5 p.m.

About the Tour

Walking into an artist’s studio gives you a much deeper understanding of what goes into the artwork. By seeing an artist’s environment, tools and materials and by learning about their inspirations and creative process, the art buyer gains insights into the artist’s work that is impossible to acquire by simply viewing art in a gallery. When you make a personal connection with an artist, you will forever have a deeper appreciation for the artwork, which becomes a part of your home.

McKinney Art Studio Tour is in its ninth year of providing the public with this rare opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at McKinney’s art community. The tour began in 2009 as a vision of local artists and teachers Sona Knox, Kerry Randol-Johnston, Lisa LaBarge and Molly Goodall. It has grown to include a wide variety of skilled artists looking to bring public awareness to the amazing collection of talent in our wonderful city.

Planning your Tour

Plan your tour by exploring the artists’ pages on our website and referencing the online or printed map, which will guide you to each artist’s location. Many of the artists, whose studios are widely spread about the city, will join with more centrally located studios in an effort to make the experience easier for tour goers. Visit as many or as few studios as you like, and at your own pace. Many of the studios are conveniently clustered near the historic downtown square, offering a variety of unique dining and shopping options.

Nel Dorn Byrd’s 14th Annual Open Studio Tour Nov. 4 & 5

I will be featuring plein air paintings at my 14th annual OPEN STUDIO TOUR, November 4 & 5.  Working quickly on location, I strive to capture the essence and feel of a subject.  I search for sites with sunshine and cast shadows and limit my painting time to an hour or less for each painting.  The scenes are from small Texas towns as well as sites in Denton and Collin Counties.  I have some paintings relating to the peanut industry that was big business in Aubrey previous to 1980; there is the old peanut drying facility next to the railroad tracks downtown – it is a painter’s paradise!  You can visit my website, neldornbyrd.com, and click on Plein Air and see many of the paintings I will be showing.

The challenge of competing in juried exhibitions continues to intrigue me.  I hate it when my work is rejected, but always enjoy the thrill of acceptance,  even though I have to pack and ship which is a “real pain”.  I was excited to have a painting  accepted into Watercolor USA again this year!   “Meter Mates”, image size 22 x 30, hung at the Springfield Art Museum in Springfield, MO June 2 – August 27.    My painting, “The Popper Building”, was accepted in the 32nd Annual Texas & Neighbors Exhibition in Irving;  this painting was done from a plein air piece that I did at the SWS Paint Out in Greenville.   “October Elegance” was included in the VAST Membership Juried Exhibition in June at UNT on the Square, Denton,  and received an award.  And “Waiting Renovation” has been accepted in the Kansas Watercolor Society National Exhibition in Whichita, Kansas.

Meter Mates  – 22 x 30
VAST and the Denton Poet’s Assembly join together each year to present Merging Visions, an exhibition of artwork & poetry.  My painting, “Barbed Wire”, was my interpretation of a poem titled, “Fences”, by the poet, Patrick Marshall.  This was my first time to participate  and I very much enjoyed the venture.  The exhibition hung  at the UNT Art Building in the Lightwell Gallery in the early summer months.

My friend and fellow watercolor artist, Gaylord O’Con, included my work in several permanent collections  in Texas and Oklahoma using  my watercolor paintings presented as large, oversized glicee’s.   In April, I did a watercolor demo for the Farmers Branch Carrollton Art Association and an afternoon workshop.

I appreciate your continued interest and support.  The pursuit of watercolor has been a lifelong endeavor; there is constant inspiration from nature, a wonderful  camaraderie with other artists, and the sheer joy of painting!

My OPEN STUDIO TOUR & SALE will be November 4 & 5 and you are invited; along with my plein air works, I will again have note cards.  Hours are 10 to 5 both Saturday & Sunday and I will have a drawing for an original painting given as a door prize. (image below)  Last year’s winner was Lillian Stracener.
If you’ve not yet come since I’ve moved to the country, I hope you will  stop by.  This is my 4th tour since relocating and I am about five miles NE of Denton, just off of FM 428. I have a beautiful view out my studio windows.  Address is 3800 Elm Bottom Circle, Aubrey, TX & my cell # is 972-839-2993.  I  will look forward to seeing you November 4 or 5.

Nel Dorn Byrd Studio Tour Nov. 5 & 6

neldornbyrdlogo

My ANNUAL STUDIO TOUR will be November 5 & 6 with hours of 10 to 5 both days.  You’re invited to come see my paintings, tour my studio & visit.  This is the 13th year to open my studio to guests & the third year since relocation to Denton County.  If you’ve not been here since we moved, I think you would enjoy a drive into the country.  I have a beautiful view from my studio  with constant inspiration from nature.   (sometimes some wild life to view also)  The address is 3800 Elm Bottom Circle, Aubrey, TX & my phone # is 940-381-3018.  Inspired by the local color and subjects nearby I have been painting landscapes of Denton County as well as scenes from downtown Denton.
Nel Dorn Byrd is a signature member of several watercolor societies and her work has been included in many publications and books.  Her paintings are in corporate and private collections throughout the United States.  She paints in a loose, impressionistic style and her works often depict strong light and dark patterns with the play of light giving excitement and interest to any subject.  Nel feels that working in a series is oftentimes conducive to the creative process. For more see www.neldornbyrd.com
byrdstudiotour

Watercolor continues to be a huge part of my life; sales are good & always lift my spirits.  I have completed several commissions this year – sometimes a challenge but always rewarding.  Thank you all for your continued support.   I am active in the Visual Art Society of Texas (VAST)  and I had a solo exhibition at the Black Box Theatre in Denton, April 1 – July 15,  with  thirteen watercolors depicting Denton scenes.  And my painting of a fall landscape titled,  Autumn, was selected for inclusion in the 2017 VAST calendar – month of October.

Watercolor USA is a top notch yearly exhibition at the Art Museum in Springfield, MO with a juror from the academic world.  I have entered for more years than I’m telling, but at long last, I had a piece accepted into the show – SO EXCITED!  Juror was Lynne Warren, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.  Leon and I attended the opening reception in Springfield on June 3.

Also, my work has been accepted into the following juried competitions this year:

10th Annual 125-Mile Visual Arts Exhibition, Denton – “Insight”
Arts Open Call – Greater Denton Arts Council – “100% Cotton”
41st Annual Western Federation Exhibition, Arvada, CO – “Popper Building”
TX Watercolor Society 67th Annual “, New Braunfels  – Waiting Renovation”     – award
SWA 2016 International, Ft Worth – “Texas Cotton”   – cash award
TX & Neighbors 31st Annual, Irving – “Rockers at Rest”
27th Annual VAST Members Exhibition, Denton – “Denim on the Stalk”
Kansas Watercolor Society National – “Denim on the Stalk”
I hope you will put my studio tour on your calendar;   I will have matted & framed watercolors along with my printed notecards & original cards.  Again this year, you can register to win one of my original watercolor paintings given as a door prize. (image below)  Bill Harmon was last year’s winner.

Remember the dates, Saturday and Sunday, November 5 & 6 with hours of 10 to 5.  I will look forward to seeing you then!

My barrel racing granddaughter has been asking me to paint horses;  here is the first of a new series.

Historic Continental Gin Building Opens Doors to Showcase the Work of 40+ Artists

continenalginBWlogo
The Continental Gin Building (CGB) will open its doors to the public Friday, November 6th from 6-10 pm and Saturday, November 7th from 2-8 pm for an open house showcasing the work of 44 diverse artists.
Guests are invited to enjoy abundant wine, treats, and live music by the Felix Flores Band.  The 127-year-old building is known as the oldest art community in Deep Ellum. For almost 30 years the CGB has been the home for a community of diversified artists including: craftsmen, film producers, painters, photographers, designers (clothing, accessories, interior), and more. It has grown to 65 tenants who create and collaborate within the historic walls. They are individual artists, under one roof, inspiring each other through an interactive community.
About the CGB:
For over two decades, artists have occupied the Continental Gin Building, making it one of the oldest creative communities in Dallas. At least twice a year, the studios are open to the public, each Fall and Spring. The Continental Gin Company was built in 1888 by Robert S. Munger, housed in a series of brick warehouses along Elm Street and Trunk Avenue. The company was closed in 1962, as Deep Ellum went through several transitions. In 1982, local real estate developer John Tatum purchased the property and spaces first began being rented to artists, thus establishing the Continental Gin Building as one of the oldest art communities in Dallas. It now houses a mix of accomplished professionals, soon-to-be-discovered and the as-yet undiscovered hopefuls, who are all diligently pursuing their talents whether that be apparel design, graphic design, photography, sculptures, film, painting, glasswork or more.

Originally a cotton gin factory built by Robert S. Munger, the CGB was the largest manufacturer of cotton-processing equipment in the United States. About the CGB
For over two decades, artists have occupied the 125 year-old Continental Gin Building, making it one of the oldest creative communities in Dallas. At least twice a year, the studios are open to the public, each Fall and Spring. Presently, over two dozen artists occupy the historic building.
