Alla Prima Painting: Process and Technique with Nathan Madrid

Fort Worth Community Arts Center
1300 Gendy St
Fort Worth, TX 76107

About The Event

Nathan Madrid

6/15/18 – 6/17/18

Friday – Sunday

9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

This workshop will guide students through the fundamentals of painting from life using the alla prima process. Meaning “at once” in Italian, alla prima is a wet on wet technique in which a painting is begun and finished in one session. This process can be difficult and require a bit of finesse to manipulate the paint while capturing the value, color, and mood of the subject.

Open to novice and advanced level painters. Students will learn proportion, value, and color relationships to structure, mass, and form. Emphasis is placed on paint handling, brush usage, and expression while understanding the relationship of the objects to its environment. Composition and the creative process are explored from concept to finished work. Methods of presentation for the workshop content will occur through lecture and demonstrations with one-on-one interaction with the instructor.

The objective of the class is to complete a painting that is successful in composition, value range, color temperature, and a sense of overall completeness in one sitting. Participants can expect to complete a total of 3 paintings gaining insight of the process to apply the alla prima technique to landscape, figure, and still life painting.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn the entire alla prima process from the beginning sketch to the applying the finish touches.
  2. Learn how to correctly evaluate value and color while using a limited color palette.
  3. Learn how to use and manipulate oil paint, mediums, and brushes.

Francys’ paintings have a unique style, elegance, and technique. She blends realism with impressionism, uses bright colors, and creates soft edges. Her glazing technique was first developed by the old masters. She is a well-known demonstrator and workshop instructor in the North Texas area.

Artist’s Statement

“Words, strung like pearls on a page paint a picture. Music tells the soul a story. Colours and shapes on a canvas make the heart sing. Three doors into a magical and lovely place that God’s gift, imagination, allows us to enter. As a child I strolled at will through these doors and lived in that place. As I “grew up”, I never left it.

In 1977 God gave me another gift in the person of artist Dick Turner. Dick gave a fortunate few the tools needed in order to use paint and canvas to take others into that world of beauty and peace. A world that might catch at your imagination and cause you to ask, “What if…..”

From the time I was a small girl I knew I would be an artist.  I just didn’t know what kind.  I read book after book about painters, musicians, dancers, and writers.  Then in 1977, through the chance meeting with artist Dick Turner, I knew that I too would be a painter.

I immersed myself, soul and body, in that pursuit.  I studied with Dick from 1977 until 1982, taking 5 and 6 classes a week at his private art school in Houston.  I have also received instruction from William Reese, William Henry Earle, Carolyn Anderson, Greg Kreutz, Roberta Carter Clark, Ray Vinella, Jean Chambers, Scott Burdick and Daniel Greene.

I also teach in my home studio and am available for club demonstrations in the Dallas metroplex area.

Although the French refer to still life as “nature morte” meaning “dead life,” the art form generally means a collection of still objects that had been alive, such as fruit, cut flowers or dead animals, thus “still life.” Over the centuries this genre has evolved to include most any collection of inanimate objects, whether or not portrayed realistically.  It is common for artists to learn still life drawing or painting early on in their studies. So whether it is an artwork from your past or a new project, bring out your still life paintings or drawings and celebrate this art form that has endured throughout history.

These collages create a micro-narrative from posters, books and drawings. The landscape features familiar but unrecognizable forms, generating pulp sensations of seduction, unease and climactic tension. The works are a conscious acceptance of colliding images and ideas.
