SWS Meeting Feb. 13 – Richard Stephens watercolor demonstration

Please join us for our Southwestern Watercolor Society monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 13th, 2018 at 7:00-9:00 PM. Location: Lovers Lane Methodist Church, Ashbury Hall, 9200 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas
(northeast corner of Northwest Highway and Inwood Road.) http://www.swswatercolor.org
Featured watercolor demonstrator: Richard Stephens:
Richard Stephens is a native of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and graduated
from the University of Central Arkansas in 1969 with a degree in art.
Although recognized for his landscape, architectural and figurative work
Stephens feels the real subjects of most of his paintings are his brush-
work and the light he tries to capture and amplify through value contrast
and an unexpected color pallet. Believing that drawing is the foundation
for all good art and design, Stephens often allows his pencil work to show
through and become an engaging element in his watercolors.

Stephens says, “My goal is to interpret, not to render. I want to engage
the viewer, entertain him and share my vision. When people view my
work that is the last step in the painting process. Of course I want people
to like my work, but like it or hate it, I don’t want them to be indifferent.”
Come to the February meeting February 13th to see Richard’s demo!

SWS has a long and rich history. The first Society organizational meetings for SWS were held in 1963. The first official meeting was held in January 1964 at N.R. Crozier Tech high school in downtown Dallas. The Society was granted a charter by the State of Texas in May of 1964.

It all started with the influence of Edgar Whitney and Naomi Brotherton. Naomi, charter SWS member, studied with Ed Whitney on several of his New England station wagon tours. Naomi convinced Ed Whitney to stop in Dallas on his way to the west coast on tour. While in Dallas he presented his book, “Watercolor, the How’s and Whys.”

The first conversation about forming the Society took place at a one of these Ed Whitney classes. It was the Whitney class that formed the invitation for an organization meeting in December of 1963. Over 50 people attended the first organizational meeting.

54 years later SWS has grown to over 400 members to be one of the largest and notable watercolor societies in the nation. Each year SWS honors Edgar Whitney with the SWS Membership Show / Edgar A. Whitney Award for Transparent Watercolor and Naomi Brotherton with the “Naomi Brotherton Award, Best of Show” for the top winner, instituted last year. Naomi at 96 still is active in SWS and teaches classes in her Dallas studio.

The original artist of each painting will then have 15 minutes to finish it. The four artists will each sign each of the four paintings. An auction of the paintings will follow. Bring your checkbook. This is a great chance to own some very unique art. As usual, the Painting of the Month Event will be up for voting while the artists are working and the awards will be made immediately following the final whistle ending the Throw Down The meeting will start promptly at 7 PM.
