We are pleased to present one of our own, Walt Davis as our Demo Artist for the April Meeting
Walt Davis is a signature member and past president of SWS, signature member and AWS award winner, and author of an article on chromatic glazing in Watercolor Artist Magazine.  He spent 25 years at the Dallas Museum of Natural History.  For 15 of those years he traveled all over Texas collecting photographs and specimens for wildlife dioramas – work that informs his paintings to this day.  After they retired, he and his wife Isabel spent 4 years traveling around the 4,000 mile border of Texas and wrote about the experience in their book,
Exploring the Edges of Texas.
Here is a pencil sketch and preliminary color sketch of an abandoned adobe house on the Mexican side of Hot Springs Canyon, part of the Lower Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River area.  Walt and his wife visited the place during a six-day float trip many years ago, and soaked in the hot springs before a thunder storm passed over, right at dusk, and cooled things off.  Walt has wanted to paint it ever since.  This will be the subject of his upcoming demo for SWS.  The perspective will be tricky and the values have to be spot on to work.  Come watch Walt work his magic!

Artist’s Statement: “I rely on instinct a great deal and my sketchbook when selecting subjects for my paintings. The lion’s share of my work is done in one sitting as my real struggle in painting is to capture the initial vision for any given piece. I am most often motivated by capturing a definitive lighting condition and how it influences shape and value rather than faithfully representing the subject as witnessed. Watercolor is uniquely suited for this task as “light” is reserved from the first brush strokes and must be protected throughout the painting process. The underlying narrative in my work is not based on any theme in particular but quite simply how “place” is inhabited and used daily. I often use remember atmospheric and lighting conditions in my work and say that I paint from life and memory simultaneously. My watercolors are not only a translation of what I see, but more importantly, an expression of how I choose to view the world.“
