”I am Laurie Goldstein-Warren and I live in West Virginia. I have been painting watercolors for sixteen years. Art has always been a part of my life. When I was young, ballet, tap and jazz dancing was my creative outlet. I was a dancer in the Rochester Academy of Performing Arts dance troupe until the age of 18. Later on my creative path took me to hair styling. I opened my own salon in New York and competed in fantasy hair competitions. I loved these particular shows because you had to create something never seen before, more avante garde than styles you would see on the street.

When I moved to West Virginia in 1998 and found myself in the countryside, I went back to one of my first creative loves, art. After many years of studying the art of watercolor with some fantastic teachers and mentors, I have been so fortunate to have found success in this field. My artwork has been shown all over this country and has been exhibited in Canada, China and Japan. I now enjoy teaching my workshops and jurying exhibits around the country. I found my voice in art… find yours….Create!

Bev Boren watercolor demo Feb. 20 for SWA

NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 20th. The Society of Watercolor Artists meets every third Monday from September through May with the exception of January, because of MLK day.  Time: 7pm. (6:30 critique by Jo Williams) Location: University of North Texas Health Science Center, Bldg. 2 – Everett Hall, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Directions see website: http://www.swawatercolor.com/

Guest Artist: BEV BOREN

Bev Boren was born and raised in Texas and now resides in Trophy Club, Texas with her husband Ben.  She is a signature member of the Outdoor Painters Society and the Southwestern Watercolor Society.  She is also a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and American Watercolor Society.

Her work is primarily the result of her need to paint.  Inspiration can come at any time and in any place.  She is not confined to one subject area.  She loves  to paint a variety of subject matter as well as working in various mediums.  Bev’s paintings are created with things that capture her eye whether it’s a still life, landscape, or capturing a person’s personality.  Painting is her way of connecting with the world and the people around her and sharing those experiences along the way.

In her words “Trying to describe or explain my efforts at painting or drawing seems like a futile effort.  After all, I want my work to express itself without the necessity of words.  My best hope is that my work will stand simply on its own, and find a connection with viewers where words fail”.

For more about the artist, see her website http://bevboren.com/

SWA Meeting Jan. 23 – Guest Artist Marla Morrison Fucich

NEXT MEETING JANUARY 23rd.

Guest Artist: Marla Morrison Fucich

I currently live in the Dallas area. I have a B.F.A. from Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas, and an M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University, in Claremont, California. My work is rooted in drawing techniques. I use acrylic inks on smooth board, and enjoy the ‘action and reaction’ of design. While I reference items from nature, like leaves, bugs, and animal tails, for example, the work is non-objective

From 1999 to the present, I’ve been an Education Advisor for Winsor & Newton. I give workshops showcasing Winsor & Newton artists’ materials at colleges and universities in the North Texas Area. The presentations cover pigment history, how quality color is made, color bias, pigment characteristics, glazing technique, use of mediums and primers, how to choose the best brush, and more. Thanks to this job, I look forward to sharing painting information with any interested person.

Jim Stewart Demo Nov. 21 for Society of Watercolor Artists

Our next SWA meeting is November 21 at 7pm with Jim Stewart as our demo artist.

The Society of Watercolor Artists meets every third Monday from September through May.   (6:30 critique by Jo Williams; meeting at 7pm) Location: University of North Texas Health Science Center, Bldg. 2 – Everett Hall, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Directions.  website: http://www.swawatercolor.com/

About Jim Stewart:

James (Jim) Stewart, is a retired architectural designer in the commercial real estate development business, who has had a passion for painting since the late 1950’s.  After high school he served six months active duty in the US Army, then enrolled at McMurray College in the spring of 1962.  As an art major he became a muralist, ‘plein air’ and studio painter working in all mediums.  In addition he served as the college Gallery Master, student assistant to the Department Head, was a volunteer assistant with the Abilene art museum, and was a commercial advertising artist for the local Channel 11 television studio.  He was twice awarded in collegiate division art shows.  His mural “Texas Under Six Flags” still remains in the J. Rollins Library at McMurray.

Jim’s professional career was centered in Dallas where he served as VP of Architecture for the Vantage Companies ’67 –

’77, Projects Design and Development  Manager for the Collins – Ridnour  Company ’78 -’83, VP of Project Design and Development for Centre Development ’83 -’92 and Partner-VP of Development for Champion Partners ’93-’03.  Throughout his professional career he kept his interest in painting by producing commission works and golf related illustrations, however this took a backseat to competitive golf, tennis, racquetball, and motocross racing.  In retrospect he muses, “I should have spent more time painting, as I never received an injury from a paint brush”.

After retiring in mid-2003, he and his wife and some close friends, moved to Lake Chapala, Mexico, which lies just south of Guadalajara, where they lived until returning to Texas in December of 2008.   In addition to being an avid golfer, Jim reignited his passion for painting in 2010 and received Best of Show in his first juried event.  To date, he has been awarded and accepted into thirty five juried invitational, open,  and national exhibitions.  He is currently a Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters, a Signature Member of the Society of Watercolor Artists, and is a member the Lake Granbury Art Association, and the Pecan Plantation Art Guild.  He has won six Best of Show Awards, three Peoples’ Choice Awards and numerous Jurors’ and Meritorious Awards.

Stewart has studied with such Texas notable artists as Robert Miller, Bud Biggs, Jim Jones, Carol Collier,  Naomi Brotherton, and Scott Myers.  He is an awarded traditional painter who is rigid in conforming to the ‘fundamental principles of art’, and believes the success of a painting is found in its composition, accuracy, dramatic impact, and most importantly public appreciation.  Of his Peoples’ Choice Awards, he states “these are my most artistically fulfilling accomplishments”.   In the future he hopes to study with other traditional painters and believes that “the learning curve is proportional to the effort one makes to excel”.

Jo Moncrief demo artist for SWA Sept. 19

Don’t miss the September meeting of the Society of Watercolor Artists as we regroup after a summer hiatus!

Jo Moncrief, of Dallas, is our guest demo artist. JO MONCRIEF is continually turning the natural world around her into abstract compositions. On walks near her home she follows the patterns of shadows on the ground, the sun’s reflection on buildings and surroundings. Jo studies the intricate cracks and shading on the sidewalk and uses these patterns for many of her abstract designs. She studies the texture and pattern of people’s faces and figures turning them into abstracted images. Many of Jo’s paintings have a touch of humor or thoughtful message implied in the painting.

Jo began her artistic career as a ceramic artist. Gradually her ceramic artwork became less functional and more like paintings on clay. Her acrylic paintings reflect her clay background with lots of texture and the love of glazes and color. Jo paints or draws each day. Before she begins a painting, she prepares the canvas with texture. She then spatters, throws, lifts and/or moves paint around in a random manner to create an under painting. This under painting allows her to be more creative. Jo’s artwork can be found in galleries and many of the top juried art festivals in the U.S. Her artwork has been featured in articles in the Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star Telegram, Van Zandt County Line, and more.

Location: University of North Texas Health Science Center, Bldg. 2 – Everett Hall, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Directions.  website: http://www.swawatercolor.com/

Randy Meador is a wholly self-taught artist without any instruction except his own exhaustive study of works by Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Paul Cézanne. Born just a stone’s throw from the Waggoner Ranch in Vernon, Texas and raised on a smaller ranch in Central West Texas, he fell in love with the hues of the West and returned to those hues in 2007 as a full time artist. Randy currently lives in Fort Worth with his wife and two remaining children (of five) and has a PO box in Saint Jo, Texas.

In 2012 Randy began accepting workshop and demo requests. His animated and unorthodox presentations are filling much of his annual schedule. Randy is a two-time Texas Watercolorist of the Year, has been awarded Best of Show in five international exhibitions, had a solo show with Justin Boots and is an Exhibition Juror for approximately 40 shows each year. He has designed several 12-foot stone relief panels for new TCU stadium, three large monuments for the Chickasaw Nation and installed two life-sized horse sculptures for City of Grand Prairie, Texas.
