The Dragon that Never Sleeps – a solo exhibit by Anna Crowley Ford

15181526_10210919676535282_1070945995647659688_n

Anna Crowley Ford’s installation consists of over 40 handmade ceramic heads in her own likeness. Each describes a different feeling or experience that she has when she is attacked by migraines. She has beautiful photographs of herself along with her story. The exhibit will include a video that she has made of herself doing simple tasks while experiencing these migraine headaches. There is a meter that goes with each vignette that tracks The escalation of her pain and nausea as she performs these tasks.

It is a beautiful and important work of art. Since so many people suffer from migraine headaches and other debilitating situations I believe as many people as possible should have an opportunity to see this exhibit.

Join us for a 2nd chance reception on Saturday, December 17 from 6:00-9:00 pm.  Exhibit on display through January 14.  For an alternate viewing time, please contact the gallery.

The Small Gallery is located in the west wing of Valley View mall, at 13331 Preston Rd., Dallas, Texas (@ LBJ/Preston).

The Dragon That Never Sleeps: Living With Chronic Migraines – Installation by Anna Crowley Ford

crowley-installation-web

The Small Gallery is honored to host an installation by Anna Crowley Ford.
Opening November 19th, 6-9pm.

Anna Crowley Ford’s installation consists of over 50 handmade ceramic heads in her own likeness.

Since so many people suffer from migraine headaches and other debilitating situations I believe as many people as possible should have an opportunity to see this exhibit.

crowley-eye-web

Anna Crowley Ford artist statement: I use my personal experience with chronic migraines and headaches to create work that speaks to larger issues of pain, isolation, mental health, and chronic illness. Using materials such as clay, video, treatment-related documents, and other medical objects I illuminate social and livelihood impacts of a chronic illness (unemployment, deterioration of friendships, dependence on others) and expound upon the sensory experiences (changes in vision, hearing, dizziness, the location and texture of pain) that occur with migraines. I strive to inform my audience and to raise awareness of disorders that are not readily visible to the outside observer.
Chronic illnesses create a vicious cycle: pain, unemployment, and expensive medical treatments. With over 30 million people affected by migraines alone, a dialogue needs to be established, stigmas removed.
My work creates a narrative to reveal the far-reaching effects of these disorders. By exploring these social, environmental, and sensory impacts of chronic headaches, migraines, and their treatments, I strive to break stigmas and to engage in a conversation about the effects of these disorders.

1. John P. Irizarry –
As an artist my paintings are dramatic like my personality. My abstractions call for your undivided attention. My sense of space is simple but fresh. The paintings are liberating fantasies where animated shapes meet color, lines and form to pull together as structural manifestations of a dream like state. I strive for each painting to succeed in constant movement and add energy to the viewers of my work.
2. Art in Venezuela –
We present expressions that represent a small snapshot of the Art in Venezuela, from the perspective of its creators.  The observer will find common themes, those that are part of what being “Venezolano” means. “The objective of art is not to adorn but to transcend…A piece of art is the eternity”.
 – Oswaldo Vigas
3. Sammy Thomason
At a pen turning club meeting a member showed me a pen made with watch parts. I had to know where he got all of the parts and how he did it. “Go to the Internet and enter steampunk” was all he said. A new world was opened to me! Victorian Science Fiction. Where have you been all of my life? Wood, metal, brass, clocks, steam power, and gears, doesn’t get any better!

Listen – Songs of the Times: May 16 at the Small Gallery

robert moore

Songwriters are the poets of all times. They are archivists of history and call attention to societal issues by way of well crafted lyrical stories. Narrative artists are also record keepers of events of the past and present.

Listen is a collaboration of the narrative artist and poetic lyricist addressing political, ethical, and social issues. These may have been written about in the past and are still relevant concerns today. The artist will interpret and create a visual representation of these subjects. Though not literal, their work intends to inspire and inform the viewer from a particular perspective.

Join us for an opening reception on Saturday, May 16 from 6:00-10:00 pm. Art on display through July 11.

Reduce, Reuse, Recyle

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Recycling, reusing, and repurposing has long been an important issue. We have become a “throw away” society. Excess has become a way of life. When is enough going to be enough?
In response to wasting our natural resources, many artists have become assemblage sculptors and painters.

This exhibit honors those artists who have expressed themselves creativety through the use of mixed media and recycled materials.

Youngsters reception March 15

Layout 1

There are many, many talented youngsters creating some thought provoking, innovative, and original art in our community. Their art is unspoiled by tradition or convention.

They are not creating for approval, or curriculum or commerce. They are communicating through artful avenues out of a need to express themselves. Some sing, some dance, some write, some draw, play music, some photograph about things that relate to their lives.

They see things differently. Their eyes are fresh, always looking for ways to give a glimpse into their thoughts. Their art is often discouraged because it is unfamiliar or doesn’t fit into the norm.

This is an exhibit to encourage these young artists to share these visions with others. Some are shy, introverted, outgoing, and nervous. But they are all brave enough to bare their souls through their art. We must appreciate them for their honesty.

Music will be provided by the Quartet from the Townview Magnet Center Orchestra.

Cowboys & Indians Reception Feb. 15

Small_Gallery

We played Cowboys and Indians as children. In Texas these games were ingrained in us as part of our culture. We were not told the real story of Cowboys or Indians. Many countries still believe that Cowboys wear Stetsons, western shirts. huge belt buckles, boots and spurs. This show will represent the Indian culture as well as take a peek at some more humorous Cowboy images.

Join us for a reception on Saturday, February 15 from 6-10pm at The Small Gallery

TRIPLETS! opening reception at the Small Gallery Sept. 21

We’re Expecting TRIPLETS!

Saturday, September 21, 6:00-10:00 pm

We are proud to announce our opening show, TRIPLETS!, an art exhibit featuring 15 local artists who will each have 3 works of art on display.

Don’t expect these multiples to be identical, or even necessarily similar to each other in their subject matter or size. In fact, it’s better to assume no three are alike! These are no ordinary siblings. Similarities will be recognizable only in the style, and the relationship to the parent artist who imagined such offspring.

Please join The Small Gallery in celebrating TRIPLETS at an opening reception on Saturday, September 21 from 6:00-10:00 pm.

Participating artists: Angela Gallia, Anna Palmer, Bernard Bortnick, Bruce Schiefelbein, Chet Morrison, Deanna Ooley, Ellen Sopher, Enrique Fernandez Cervantes, Joe Simmons, Johnathon J. Foster, Ken Martin, Laura Abrams, Pamela K. Neeley, Sherry Houpt, Steve Danner, Valery Guinon.
