Ted Houston Watercolor/printmaking demo Feb. 21 in Richardson

TedHouston-168

The next Richardson Civic Art Society meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.

The February Demonstrator will be Ted Houston, demonstrating watercolor/print making. The meeting starts at 6:30.

Ted combines a skill in drawing with a love for color to create emotionally evocative work in a variety of media including oil painting, water color, drawing, and printmaking.

A modern renaissance man, Ted started his study of life drawing at the Philadelphia Academy of Art while earning his PhD in Physics at the University of Pennsylvania. On moving to Dallas, he continued his study of life drawing with Roger Winters, and later with Bill Comodor. Ted has also studied painting and printmaking at Brookhaven College for the Arts. His work has won many awards including several best of shows, and has been exhibited in juried shows with the Dallas Business Council for the Arts, the Richardson Civic Art Society, and at the Brookhaven studio gallery. For a while, Ted taught drawing at Ole Podrida. Much of Ted’s work is noted for capturing an emotion while also providing interest and beauty to the eye.

In Ted’s own words “I like to use oil paint thinly in a watercolor style, sometimes building up layers while keeping the freshness and gesture of the subject. My love of watercolor probably stems from my mother being a watercolorist. I like the immediacy of the medium with the ability to freely capture a gesture or to render a detail. It is a delight to see the flow of color on the paper. My main interest in printmaking is to explore form and color as enabled by the medium, rather than to run multiple copies of the same image. Thus, while have run some editions, most of my prints are monotypes (a single image) or mono prints (unique prints formed from a common image base, e.g. color variations of a screen print).”

RCAS Sept. 26 demonstration meeting: Walt Davis, watercolorist

RCASlogobox

The Richardson Civic Art Society will be holding the first program meeting of the 2016-2017 Season on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

September’s artist will be Walt Davis, who will be demonstrating watercolor. Walt is a signature member and past president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society. He started painting in watercolor over thirty years ago. He studied with Faith Helen Foust at Eastfield Community College, as well as with Bud Biggs. In addition, he attended workshops with Doug Walton, Louise Cadillac, Carole Barnes, Frank Webb, Mark Mehaffey, Richard Stephens, and noted bird aartist John P. O’Neil.

WaltDavisInterogatinDaisies WaltDavisDidnt

Walt Davis taught watercolor, figure drawing, and plein air sketching at Eastfield Community College, Amarillo College, Panhandle Art Center, San Angelo Museum of Art, and in his studio in Commerce. He conducted demonstrations and workshops in Amarillo, Brownsville, Dallas, San Angelo and nine other Texas cities.

Davis believes that pigment dissolved in water and applied to paper, produces more luminous color than any other medium. Watercolor and acrylic are mercurial, sometimes difficult, media: always full of surprises. He constantly weighs the importance of original intent against unexpected opportunities.

2016 50th Annual RCAS Regional Juried Art Exhibition Awards & 50th Anniversary

RCASGala-512

The grand finale of RCAS’s 50th Anniversary year was celebrated at the Artists’ Award Reception on May 15th at the Charles W. Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas. In addition to the winning artists and their friends and families, this gala event was attended by the RCAS President, Officers, Members, and thirteen RCAS Presidents Emeritus along with City Officials, including Mayor Paul Voelker, Assistant City Manager Shanna Sims-Bradish and Richardson Public Library librarian and RCAS liaison Ludmila Pospelova. There were more than 200 guests at this reception which featured a lavish buffet and a wine bar. Throughout the event we were entertained by the Paul Utay & Jazz After All band.

The Awards Ceremony was hosted by the 2014-2016 RCAS President, Pat Fekete; the incoming 2016-2017 President, Jones C. McConnell; the Regional Show Chairman, Linda Clary and the Co-Chairman, Denise Weeren.

Eighty works of art were selected for this show, from two hundred and thirty-three entries, by the show judge, Michael Holter, NWS, SWS, SWA. Nineteen cash prizes and eighteen merchandise prizes were awarded to thirty-seven winning artists. Pat Fekete presented a brief history of the Richardson Civic Art Society and introduced the honored guests. Mayor Paul Voelker delivered a congratulatory speech honoring the winning artists and thanking RCAS for its fifty years of artistic and cultural service to the City of Richardson and surrounding communities. He also thanked RCAS for the Best of Show works of art they have presented to the City every year for the past fifty years. Jones C. McConnell announced the awards while Pat Fekete and Linda Clary presented the winners with their certificates and cash and merchandise prizes.

The judge, Michael Holter, congratulated the artists and shared his thoughts about the excellent quality and variety of the works of art in the show. He acknowledged that the task of choosing winners from a selection of outstanding works of art was truly difficult. He thanked the Richardson Civic Art Society for inviting him to judge this year’s show and offered his congratulations on 50 years of artistic endeavors. He explained that he approaches judging a show like this by evaluating the artist’s use of the timeless principles of design and craftsmanship and by looking for good composition, color harmony, emotion, appropriate relationship to the subject, strong mastery of the tools and consistency of execution.

After the awards presentation, the evening was concluded with a large, delicious anniversary cake prepared by Divinidee Cakes and enjoyed by all.

A huge debt of gratitude goes out to the following volunteers who helped to make the exhibition and reception a spectacular success: our President, Pat Fekete; Chairpersons Linda Clary and Denise Weeren; graphic designer Beth Eschbach; intake volunteers Michael Archer, Claudia Caudill, Lari Howard, Jones C. McConnell, and John Cheney; and treasurer Carol Powell. Michael Archer and Claudia Caudill also volunteered their photography skills to capture the significant moments of this event. I would also like to thank Susan Powers who is the Art Gallery Coordinator for the Eisemann Center, and David Bower who did such a fantastic job of hanging the show. Many others participated in making this a very special evening. My sincere apologies if I have overlooked any of our members who generously contributed their time and talents in support of the Richardson Civic Art Society’s 50th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition and Anniversary Celebration.
