This popular annual exhibition honors The Virgen de Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico. Since 1992, Jose Vargas, the curator of the exhibition, has invited talented and diverse artists every year to create expressive and imaginative works of art that pay tribute to the “dark skinned Madonna.” The show has become a tradition in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and has been praised by the public for its original renditions of the iconic religious and cultural symbol. Any person visiting this exhibition, regardless of their faith or religion, can enjoy the colorful array of works of art portraying devotional and warm-hearted artistic expressions by various individuals.

Participating artsits include Janet M. Reynolds, Samuel Torres, Diane Torres, Samuel A. Garcia, Vincent Morin Jr., Ramiro Ordonez, Michele Mayfield, Francisco Delgado, Yvonne Perez, Ricardo Boisselier, Patricia Cowan, Lorena Williams, Amy J. Schultz, Denise Althea Graham, Jose Vargas, Mary Ann Turner, MAK, Liliana Ramirez, Sarita Westrup, Margaret Williams, Eva Moraga, Rebeca Navarro, Renee Padilla Quiroz, Raul Servin, Marcela Mihaloglou, Eva Azul, Juliet Rivera-Schwabe, and Alexandra Tomala.
This year Jose Vargas began a partnership with Samuel A. Garcia, a gallery curator and instructor from the Ysleta Independent School District in El Paso, Texas. The first collaborative project of the two curators involves an art exchange program that will allow art instructors form the border town to exhibit their works of art in Dallas. The program will also give Dallas Artists an opportunity to display their works in a similar, long-lived Virgen de Guadalupe exhibition in El Paso. The organizers of the exhibitions in Dallas and El Paso foresee that this will be the first of many future artistic collaborations.

About the Curator
Jose Vargas has curated this exhibition since 1992. Mr. Vargas is an experienced visual artist and exhibition curator who has collaborated with the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and other City of Dallas cultural centers on numerous occasions, offering curatorial, art administration, and art logistic services.

Two Free Calls for Art from the OCCC: Dia de lost Muertos Altars & La Virgen de Guadalupe

diadelosmuertosaltarcall

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is now accepting submissions for the Dia de los Muertos Altar exhibit. Building a Day of the Dead altar is an important part of this popular Mexican tradition. Families build altars weeks prior to the feast day, Nov. 2nd, often having photos and offerings dedicated to departed spirits. Artists are invited to participate by creating their unique interpretation of a Dia de los Muertos altar. Non-profit organizations and schools are welcome to submit as well. Below are a few requirements.

Requirements

Altars can consist of both traditional and non-traditional mediums, such as projections, paintings, and other mediums. Altar entries must not exceed more than 4ft in width and depth from the wall.

Must include a brief description of what altar will consist of along with a thumbnail sketch of what you envision. Please mention in your description if your altar requires access to power, and if you should require a table.

Submissions are due by October 14, 2016. Selected participants will be notified on October 19, 2016. Submissions and questions can be emailed to Gerardo Robles at Gerardo.Robles@DallasCityHall.com.

lavirgencall

Dallas artist and exhibition curator, Jose Vargas, is seeking art entries for the 2016 art exhibition. The show will be presented at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center, a facility of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, from December 2, 2016 to January 13, 2017.

The central theme of the exhibition is the Virgin of Guadalupe, an important and celebrated figure in Latin American religion, art, and culture. Although the symbol of the Virgin of Guadalupe is tightly connected with the history of Mexico, people from many parts of the world have found themselves attracted to the fascinating story of the dark-skinned indigenous Madonna.

The artwork created for this exhibition must depict the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, or must be primarily based on her image. The Curator will not review entries that are exact copies or replicas of the original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Instead, artists are encouraged to create unique works of art that feature original concepts and ideas, innovative techniques and great imagination. Due to the nature of the exhibition, art that is deemed offensive will not be considered.

EXHIBITION SCHEDULE:
Dates of show: Dec. 2, 2016 – Jan.13, 2017
Delivery of artwork: November 19, 2016 (4-7PM)
Reception with the artists: December 3, 2016 (6:00PM – 8:00PM)
Art pick up: January 14, 2017 (1-3 PM)

ART ELIGIBILITY

Submission of entries constitutes agreement to the conditions set forth in this document and in the Policy for Exhibitions of the Oak Cliff Cultural Center.
