Art in the Metroplex was first held in 1983. At its root, the exhibit was the brainchild of two people who wanted to work together. Beth Lea Clardy was an established Fort Worth artist, a 1940 graduate of the TCU art program and one of a quartet of concerned citizens who in 1978 founded the non-profit Committee for an Artists’ Center. Ronald Watson was an artist and educator on the faculty of the TCU Department of Art and Art History. He assumed the chairmanship of the TCU art department in 1982 with a goal of “seeking greater collaboration between the university and Fort Worth artists and organizations. Through its proud 33 year history, Art in the Metroplex has exhibited the work of thousands of local artists but much like all great things, it too must come to an end. Watch for details about a new show at this time next year in its place.

CALL TO ARTISTS: Open call to all artists in the DFW Metroplex and surrounding areas – Tarrant, Dallas, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Ellis, Grayson, Hill, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Johnson, Kaufmann, Navarro, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Somervell and Wise. Open to artists over the age of 18, all disciplines with no theme. All medias including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, prints, drawings, mixed media, sculpture, video, installation, photography, and digital art. 2017 Texas Biennial call for art – deadline May 31

Basic RGB

The Texas Biennial is an independent survey of contemporary art in Texas, founded to provide an exhibition opportunity open to all artists living and working in the state. The sixth edition of the Biennial will take place in the fall of 2017, with a series of exhibitions focused on relevant conversations around the state, and parallel programming at venues across the state.

The Texas Biennial has worked with many different curators and taken many approaches to selecting artists from the open call. This iteration will be led by Mexico City-based, independent curator Leslie Moody Castro as the TX★17 Curator and Artistic Director. Moody Castro will make individual selections from works entered. For the first time in the Biennial’s history, all artists selected from the Open Call will be awarded a stipend.

The Texas Biennial is open to all artists living and working in Texas. Artists attending Texas-based residency programs are eligible to apply, as long as the work was completed during the time spent in Texas. Artists living and working within 10 miles of a Texas border are also eligible to apply (Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Mexico).

About the Jurors:
Linda Ridgway (born 1947 in Jeffersonville, Indiana) creates poetic bronze wall reliefs that convey both autobiographical and cultural imagery. Although educated as a printmaker, Ridgway continues to experiment with the limits of various media to create work that remains intimate regardless of scale. Ridgway’s bronzes emerge from a two-dimensional template to become new spatial objects that elucidate the artist’s personal experiences.

Linda Ridgway received an M.F.A. from Tulane University, and a B.F.A. from the Louisville School of Art. She has participated in various solo and group exhibitions including Linda Ridgway: A Survey, Poetics of Form at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas and the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas in 1997-98; and One Hundred Years: The Permanent Collection of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas in 2002.
John Alexander Taylor received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Dallas. He has exhibited throughout Texas and the United States. Taylor is Adjunct Professor in printmaking at Cedar Valley College, and has taught at Southeast Tarrant College, Southern Methodist University, and others in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He was a member of 500X Gallery and currently exhibits at RO2 Gallery. He served as a representative of the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas, where he moderated a panel discussion on the future of printmaking in the DFW area.
Taylor’s work incorporates the style of large vinyl murals, prints, and photography. It reflects his many interests in urban landscape at the turn of the 20th century – architecture that is constructed and arranged with modern elements. He creates large wall murals using commercial materials such as vinyl, wood, paint, and illumination. By demonstrating his love of teaching and the joy of making his own art, he pushes students to find their own artistic voice and take on the challenge of being an artist.

The exhibition is on display from January 13 – February 25, 2017

JUROR

Linda Ridgway (born 1947 in Jeffersonville, Indiana) creates poetic bronze wall reliefs that convey both autobiographical and cultural imagery. Although educated as a printmaker, Ridgway continues to
experiment with the limits of various media to create work that remains intimate regardless of scale. Ridgway’s bronzes emerge from a two-dimensional template to become new spatial objects that elucidate the artist’s personal experiences.

Linda Ridgway received an M.F.A. from Tulane University, and a B.F.A. from the Louisville School of
Art.
