On Creativity…
As our 50th anniversary draws to a close, I’m reflecting how incredible 2016 has been for CAC and me personally. It was an exciting year of creativity and collaboration resulting in achievements that we never imagined. We began the year with the launch of the anniversary at the opening of The Legacy of Octavio Medellin: His Work and Influence at the Latino Cultural Center in which more than 300 people attended. The celebration continued when we hosted our 50th anniversary fundraiser, The Blue Plate Special, in April that was attended by more than 200 people and featured the silent auction of hundreds of artist-designed plates. It culminated in October at the City Performance Hall where more than 250 people previewed the Octavio Medellin Map & Driving Tour as well as enjoyed performances by traditional Aztec dancers, a student mariachi band and a brief commission play performed in both English and Spanish.
From the first brainstorming session with our fantastic advisory committee two years ago to the exciting relationships we created with many stakeholders old and new, the anniversary was a journey that allowed CAC to elevate its status in the community. We are especially grateful to SMU’s Jerry Bywaters Special Collection at the Hamon Arts Library which houses Medellin’s archives and the City of Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs both of which supported us completely along the way.
For me personally, 2016 marked the 10th year of my tenure at CAC, and I’m so grateful to the original board that took the risk to hire a “non-arts” person for the job. I have been privileged to have had several wonderful mentors all of my professional career, but the two women that have served in that capacity in this job and also served as CAC 50th anniversary Honorary Co-Chairs – Gail Sachson and Patricia Meadows  – have been miracles in my life.
I had the opportunity to hear Rev. Richie Butler of St. Paul United Methodist Church, speak at the Dallas Arts District Breakfast this week and to paraphrase, he noted that “religion divides, politics divide, but art and creativity unite us for a common good.” For those of us working in this field and for the many arts organizations making an impact, our job is to provide sanctuary, now more than ever. As Alice Walker writes, “Though we have encountered our share of grief and troubles on this earth, we can still hold the line of beauty, form and beat. No small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one.”

Preservation is the ART of the City

Preservation is the ART of the City

Presented by Historic Fort Worth, Inc

September 8 – 24, 2016

Fort Worth Community Arts Center

Each September Historic Fort Worth, Inc. produces a month-long, multi-pronged event called Preservation is the Art of the City™ at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy Street. In its 14th year, the primary component is an art show and sale that runs the entire month. Recognizing that great cities need studio artists who can earn a living, the artists in this show set and receive the fair market value for each of their artworks, which represents 65% of the total sales price, with the remaining 35% going to HFW as a charitable gift from the patron. Artists have the option of entering works into a special section called Stories of the City. During the month thousands of people visit the show. The following list of HFW events and programs occur within the gallery space. Each exposes new audiences to works by talented regional artists. Featured Artist: John Hartley.

Events at Preservation is the Art of the City™ September 9-24 FWCAC Hours

O’Keefe Studio: Student Art Show, Edward Hopper Lecture & more

The O’Keefe Studio – Student show… December Lecture… Help the studio grow; enter a raffle to win a drawing made by Michael! Additional raffle details:
Upon purchasing a raffle ticket the individuals name will be added to an ongoing list where each person receives a number (multiple numbers for multiple tickets purchased).  On the evening of Dec. 7th, just before the lecture begins at 7:30, I will pick three numbers from a bowl.  We will connect the numbers to names from the list, determining the winners. If present at the talk, the person drawn first will get to choose from the three drawings up for raffle.  If the first person drawn is not present they still win a drawing but will not have their choice from the three drawings.  Second person drawn, if present, will then get to choose, and so on.  Raffle tickets (or numbers, as there are no actual tickets) can be purchased from me in person or by putting a check in the mail (address below).

Thank you in advance to all of those who have and will participate in support of future endeavors at The O’Keefe Studio. Even if you don’t buy a raffle ticket, come out to hear the talk and, more importantly, come out to see the student show! http://theokeefestudio.com/
