“Its a Charmed Life!”

March 10 – 12, 2017

Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Dallas Market Hall

http://www.quiltersguildofdallas.org/2016_show_event_home

This year, the Show Chair’s Theme is “It’s a Charmed Life!”

Charm Quilts have been around for over 150 years. They are referred to by many names: One Patch, indicating a single shape; Beggar, indicating that the quilter begged for fabric; and Odd-Feller, indicating no repeats in fabrics. Some very recognizable patterns include 1000 Pyramids, Grandmother’s Flower Garden, Apple Core and Postage Stamp.

For the purposes of the show theme category, here are the rules:

  • ONE SHAPE ONLY! You can use various sizes of the same shape in the quilt.
  • You can repeat fabrics in the quilt.
  • The edges of the quilt may have partial shapes where the sides were squared up, but the body of the quilt can have only one shape.
  • Borders and applique are allowed but should be an accent, not the focus.

Quilts can be one-person, two-person or group. Add a little charm to your life in 2017!

Open Reception
Friday, March 3, 2017

invisible. is a collection of new work by Ciara Elle Bryant that uses the black female body as a site to explore black female identity in popular culture. Invisible. uses mixed media to explore the themes of power, femininity and social objectivity.

Born in Miami Florida, Bryant is a fine art photographer residing in Dallas, Texas where she recently received her Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Performance with a concentration in Visual Arts from The University of Texas at Dallas.

Safe House is an exhibit on the African American coding tradition in quilts and the bond of black women in quilting circles. The quilts feature traditional block-quilting, original designs, and fiber art, quilted by hand as well as by machine. Creativity and improvisation are common characteristics of many African American quilts and theses quilts provide us with insight into a rich heritage and history. Quilts featured in the exhibit come from members of the Quilting Sister of Color Quilting Circle.

Dallas Modern Quilt Guild Exhibit at the Granville Arts Center

dmqglogo

July 16-August 30

Dallas Modern Quilt Guild Exhibit

Granville Arts Center – Gallery Space

The Dallas Modern Quilt Guild exhibit features wonderfully designed and crafted quilts, following the aesthetics of the “Modern Quilt” movement. Modern quilters work in different styles, and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern Traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting. This exhibit will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during all performances.

Dallas Modern Quilt Guild:

Follow the DMQG at http://www.meetup.com/DallasMQG/

“Our mission is to promote the art of modern quilting in the Dallas area. We offer educational demonstrations/workshops, swap and challenge opportunities, and charitable community outreach.”

“SAQA Texas Experience”

A traveling show of 36 small art quilts created by Texas members of Studio Art Quilt Associates will be the focus at DAFA’s August meeting. Come to The Point on Monday, August 25, to see the 12” x 12” quilts and hear DAFA’s own Heather Pregger talk about the varied styles and techniques of the artists who created them. The quilts have been exhibited in Savannah and Houston and will travel to other points around Texas in the coming months. DAFA is very fortunate to have access to this special show! The regular meeting begins at 6:45 p.m.

Mini-workshop for August

Come at 5:30 to create your own Spirit Doll in a mini-workshop led by Valery Guignon. Make a simple wire armature for your doll, and dress her with fabulous dyed silk scraps from Guignon Design Studio. Use shells or beads to create your doll’s hands and face. Embellish with feathers, ribbons, and whatever you bring to enhance her. See details here about the kit fee, etc.

Monday’s Show & Tell

Bring your latest creations for Show & Tell. You are welcome to bring as many as you wish, but in the interest of time, please plan to limit your description to one favorite. There will be plenty of room to display them all on the tables at the back of the auditorium and plenty of time after the meeting to chat with members interested in your work.

QUILTS: THE NEW GEOMETRY opens April 4 at the MADI

MADI_logo_MC

MADI Opening | Friday, April 4th

quiltsgeometry

QUILTS: THE NEW GEOMETRY, an exhibition curated by textile artist Sue Benner will feature quilt artists whose work captures the essence of the MADI aesthetic; namely, non-objective geometric shapes with strong color division.
The opening reception will be Friday, April 4, 5:30-7:30pm.
Please RSVP at 214-855-7802 or here!

QUILTS: THE NEW GEOMETRY
APRIL 4 THROUGH JULY 6, 2014

CURATOR”S STATEMENT: SUE BENNER

Long before Mondrian’s Composition with Grid, quilters were making glorious geometric abstractions by sewing together pieces of cloth. It’s hard to imagine that pioneers in Abstract Art could have failed to notice how analogous was the quilt form; for already by the late 1800’s, an unknown quilter from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, had hand-stitched a violet square inside a blue square inside a brown square. The resulting Center Square Amish quilt is as elegant as an Albers and as expressive as a Klee. Amish quilts can be seen as the prophets of the Modernist use of color and form as subject.

For this exhibition at the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art, I am addressing the nonobjective geometric abstraction inherent to quilts and the contemporary practice of this art form. I sought out works from American artists working in a style that most directly reflects the MADI aesthetic: geometric quilts with bold shapes and striking colors.
