Not from Baltimore Album Quilts: Recent Works by the Denton Quilt Guild

Not from Baltimore Album Quilts: Recent Works by the Denton Quilt Guild
Meadows Gallery, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center
June 17 – July 29, 2016, FREE

Baltimore Album Quilts originated in Baltimore, Maryland in the 1840s and quickly became one of the most popular quilting styles far beyond Baltimore. These exquisite pieces are made up of a number of appliquéd blocks, each with a different design and motif. This exhibition features Baltimore Album Quilts made by members of the Denton Quilt Guild which were often designed by the makers, although antique quilts and patterns from the past and present served as inspiration. The complexity of the designs in the quilts demonstrates the skill and taste of the maker. Many hours were devoted to the creation of each of them as they are all destined to become family heirlooms.

You need media attention but aren’t sure where to start. Publicists are expensive and often don’t deliver what they promise. In this info-packed two-hour seminar, media pro Elaine Liner shares her insider tips and secrets for matching your ideas to what media need right now. Learn who the friendliest media are, what they want and how they want it in do-able step-by-step strategies.  Master the media matrix and get positive coverage you don’t have to pay for!

Elaine, longtime arts critic at Dallas Observer (and recipient of too many bad PR pitches), developed her workshop to help those involved in the arts and other creative entrepreneurs.  She’s now taught her methods three times to sold-out audiences at the renowned Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland and to artists and arts groups all over Texas and beyond. Her “grads” have gone on to be featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, American Theatre Magazine, Dramatists mag, TimeOut London and New York and scores of other major publications.

Wash & Wax opens May 21 at Irving Arts Center

Wash & Wax: A Collaboration

May 21July 3, 2016

“Wash & Wax: A Collaboration” features artists Virginia Greaves and Leisa Rich. The two have created nine large contemporary quilts,  a massive 25 x 7 foot deconstructed quilt, a simulated car wash entrance and more for a unique exhibition inspired by Leisa’s drive-through car wash photos. It opens May 21 at the Irving Arts Center in Irving, Texas.

An intriguing idea to put the unlikely artists together came to Lauren Bernazza, who was at that time Gallery Director at the Abernathy Arts Center Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, when the artists’ prize-winning — and completely different — pieces were exhibited side-by-side during the 2014 Georgia Artists exhibition.

The main pieces featured in the exhibition – abstract “quilts” that slowly deconstruct – are based on photographs Leisa has taken during her trips through industrial car washes. These images were then translated to fabric through piecing and passed back and forth over a 15-month time period between the two artists who stitched and embellished them into the series of works that represent the “wash and wax” experience. In addition to fabrics, the artists also used recycled shower curtains, 1970s designer dresses, nail polish and more. That these two very different individuals, with such diverse ways of creating — one working in a traditional, 2D technique and the other with sculptural 3D – were brought together, was a uniquely transformative experience for the artists.

About Virginia Greaves
Self-taught quilt maker Virginia Greaves started making quilts after the birth of her first child and grew from making traditional quilts to creating intricate portraits of people and animals using textiles as her medium. Although at first glance her work is often mistaken for paintings, her materials are mostly fiber and thread.

About Leisa Rich
Leisa Rich, trained in the fiber arts, works with non-traditional approaches and conceptual materials and techniques, including 3D printing. She invents new visual realities that make a transformation from one tangible to another through touchable, viewer interactive art works and the creation of transformative, pseudo-Utopian environments that offer a collective human experience.

Quilter’s Guild of Dallas: Kathy Schmidt talk & workshops

QGD October Meeting

Thursday, October 1, 2015, 7:15pm

Kathy Schmidt – “From Tradition to Rule Breaker”

A visual journey from my beginnings as a traditional quilter to the way my work is currently created. The steps along that path are available to any quilter and I will show you how to get there. How to begin breaking the rules, why you might want to, and what you should expect when you get there-even what doesn’t work-are all covered in this lecture. (This trunk show uses actual quilts, not a digital presentation!)

Quirks Ltd

Location: Congregation Shearith Israel, 9401 Douglas Ave, Dallas, TX 75225, Kaplan Auditorium

Friday Workshop

Rule Breakers—Build a Scrappy Village

Your unique improv blocks will be used to create a scrappy little village. Learn straight line improv piecing, while trying to put a dent in your personal scrap pile. Design, color choices and construction methods, including quilt-asyou-go, will be a big part of this class. Your village will NOT look like the sample, but will be completely and uniquely YOU.

Student Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Click HERE for the supply list for the Friday Workshop.

Rule Breakers – Improv with a Modern Slant

No need to be dependent on patterns-learn how to do free-form piecing to create your own unique designs. Think ‘modern’ with lots of solid colors, low volume prints and asymmetrical grid work. Your quilt will NOT look like the sample. We’ll discuss contrast and color value and learn how to construct a quilt with different sized blocks. Once you learn the basics, your quilts can always be pattern free and any size you’d like.

Student Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
