WABI SABI & THE FLOW
Carl Block & Billy Ray Mangham
February 12 – April 2, 2017
opening celebration: Sunday, February 12th, 4-7pm with entertainment by Mariachi Quetzal.
Block & Mangham are both known for their own character and for their fun very talented individual approach to ceramic work.
Carl Block has been nationally known for his face jugs for many years and from this he adds all kinds of work that represents his love for terra cotta, colorful glazes, chickens, faces, eyes, platters, and his membership in the Independent Order of Oddfellows.
Billy Ray Mangham has a huge following for his pottery, dry wit, and colorful character. We saw his life size busts and were bowled over! He has created a series of Texas Blues musicians for this exhibit that is stunning in skill and beauty!
These 2 meet many years back as they studied at North Texas University. They are close friends and both true Texans in every sense of the word. They share esthetics and friendship. We admire them individually, as friends, colorful characters, and the fun they have in creating is obvious.

In the Spotlight
This collection is the product of Fort Worth native Larry Kleinschmidt’s love of art and determination to uncover paintings, prints and sculptures that have survived from the city’s colorful past. After countless trips to local estate sales, flea markets, antique shops, galleries and auctions, his collection has come to feature artworks made between 1920 and 1980 by many of the community’s earliest and most accomplished artists. It contains scarce examples of the motifs and painting styles that defined local art up to and during the Great Depression, along with works that exemplify the rise of modern art in Texas during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Many local artists rose to prominence during the 20th century. Their stories are preserved in the Larry Kleinschmidt Collection and sister collections around the city. It is Larry’s hope that these stories will resonate with you and that similarly-minded collectors will, in the future, devote their time and energy to discovering even more evidence of the fascinating connection between Fort Worth and the talented painters, printmakers and sculptors who have called this city home.
