Opening Reception for the 2017 Merging Visions Exhibition May 21

MV 2017 logo 300

You are invited to the Opening Reception for the 2017 Merging Visions Exhibit, on Sunday, May 21, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the University of North Texas’ Lightwell Gallery, 1201 West Mulberry Street, Denton, TX 76201.  As an added feature during the reception, 15 of the poets will read one of their poems while an image of the art paired with their work is being shown. The public also is invited to cast a vote for which of the poets and artists created the best ‘pairing.’ A tally of the votes will determine which of the top 3 poets and artists will receive the “People’s Choice Award” for this year.

This exhibition is a joint effort from members of the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) and the Denton Poets’ Assembly (DPA).  It is an exhibition of art paired with poetry. This is the ninth year for this collaborative art and poetry exhibition. This is the first year that the UNT College of Visual Arts and Design has joined as a co-sponsor and host of the event.

This beautiful exhibit contains 44 works of art and 44 poems. Each piece of art is hung beside a poem with which it is paired. Either the artist or the poet initiated the process of ‘pairing’ their works. Various art media, such as paintings, drawings, imaginative fiber or textiles, prints, and photographs, comprise the works from 38 VAST artists. A wide range of poetry from 24 of the DPA poets completes the ‘pairings’ in the exhibit.

To commemorate the works in the exhibit, VAST and the DPA have published a 100 page catalog, entitled “Collections,” in which all of the exhibited works are displayed. This year the Denton Benefit League granted funds to assist VAST in the catalog’s production. A limited number of catalogs will be available for purchase at the reception.

For the past 6 years, volunteers from VAST and DPA have accomplished the remarkable task of producing both an exhibit and its accompany color catalog. The catalog also underscores the basic theme of this endeavor, that collaboration and new perspective benefit everyone. Through it, the artist, the poet, and the viewer continue to share the ‘voice’ these two forms of art lend to each other.

The Denton Public Library and the Special Collections Department in the University of North Texas Libraries have archived single copies of each consecutive issue of the catalog.

After the reception, those wanting to see the Merging Visions Exhibit can visit the UNT Art Building, 1201 W. Mulberry, Denton, TX, from May 22 through June 27th, during Gallery hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 10:00pm; Saturday and Sunday, noon – 8:00 pm

Please join us in celebrating these written and visual arts.

Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes April 29

Beautiful Souls: Artwork By Sierra Barnes

We are excited to have a brand new artist for this upcoming show.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Sierra Barnes offers the kind of beautiful art that

pairs well with honoring the sacred energy of the feminine. Join us for an

opening reception from 7-10 p.m. April 29 at Art Is Life Studio.
At 19 years old, Sierra is self-taught artist born and raised in Dallas, Texas.

In 2002 she was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a type of brain tumor

derived from pituitary gland embryonic tissue. This as well as other obstacles

and challenges in her life have not stopped her from pursuing her artistic passion.

It has instead inspired and motivated her as an artist as well as a person.
“Nobody’s perfect but everyone has beauty within them.

These pieces of art I have created were inspired by my own

struggles and experiences,” Sierra said.

Sierra is also a writer and writes a poem to go along with every single

piece of art she creates. Each of them are hand-written and attached

to the back of the painting.
“This art show is about how we are the souls within us and not just our

bodies,” Sierra said. “We can find beauty within our flaws and

imperfections. We judge one another and we sometimes judge ourselves.”

We look forward to seeing you. There will be light snacks served as well as

non-alcoholic beverages keeping in the studio’s mission of providing a

safe, sober space for individuals in recovery.
