We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience.
Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content that you are working on and spend time viewing other artists work. We will discuss the methods and the impact that these artists achieve using their techniques.
Michael will demonstrate his approach to creating  landscapes and show you several high-speed video demonstrations.
And you will have ample time to successfully complete your own paintings.
Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs.
From Herb Reed, past president of Southwestern Watercolor Society.
“For the past dozen years I have facilitated and/or participated in more than 20 watercolor workshops, as an officer of SWS and as a principal in a local gallery.  Michael’s recent workshop was one of the top few that “really made a difference” in the way that I approach painting.  Take it . . . you will learn about design and composition, techniques, and hints on taking reference photos — all for turning out terrific watercolors.”

Wes Hardin Murals in Plano Completed

On Aug. 28, artist Wes Hardin began painting the district’s second mural on the exterior wall of Vickery Park. All three murals are to be inspired by historic photos of Plano that residents submitted to the Plano Mural Project.

Wes Hardin’s design represents a scene one would have found in downtown Plano in the early 1900s: citizens strolling in period dress, a Texas Electric Railway railcar and the train depot, and a delivery boy riding in a horse and buggy. The whole scene is set in front of a colorful Texas sunset.

For a video about the artist and the murals see https://vimeo.com/238778703

Marian Hirsch Pastel Demonstration in Plano Oct. 24

Marian Hirsch will demonstrate fine points of pastel painting at October 24 Plano Art Associarion Members’ Meeting held at the ArtCentre of Plano, 902 East 16th Street, Plano, TX 75074. For more information, contact info@planoartassociation.org. Website: http://planoartassociation.org

This will be a great opportunity to see and hear from a top master of the pastel medium. Marian is noted for her vivid colors and lively landscape compositions.

     Marian’s Demonstration Statement
The intense, vivid colors and immediacy of application make pastels an individually expressive medium. The directness of the medium often brings a uniquely personal application – like handwriting.
The brilliance of color is one of the most seductive characteristics of the pastel medium for me. I will share how I approach my own work from inspiration to working methods and will go over many of the resources available today for pastel enthusiasts. I’ll be focusing on the visual language of the landscape as nature continues to provide a powerful catalyst in the evolution of my work.
There is always that moment when light falls on a subject in just such a way that the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Then that creative spark ignites the painting process. Though I spend a lot of time working plein air, my pastels are composed and created in the studio.

About the Artist
This full-time professional artist is a signature member of the prestigious Pastel Society of America as well as Pastel Society of the Southwest.
Her pastel paintings have been published in American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and International Artist Magazine. Corporations have responded to the richly colored landscapes, and her work is included in numerous corporate collections such as Verizon, Ford Motor Company, AT&T, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Merrill Lynch, Lucent Technologies, Ernst & Young and Dallas Business Journal. Three of her pastels now grace the new Fort Belvoir Hospital. For more about her art, please visit her website.www.marianhirsch.com

New mural in Plano designed by Will Heron makes Its mark

If you’ve driven down 15th Street these past 2 weeks, you’ve probably noticed the latest addition to the arts district: a colorful mural on the wall of Georgia’s Farmers’ Market.

The mural, a product of the Downtown Mural Project http://www.planomural.com/, uses visual art to celebrate Plano’s rich history by incorporating historical elements inspired by Plano’s past. Each of the mural’s five columns is a different color and focuses on elements from historic photos of Plano, submitted by residents earlier this year.

This is the first of three murals to be painted in Downtown Plano this year. Local artist Will Heron is the mural’s designer. He has designed and worked on several other murals in the DFW area since founding the art collective WHERON – http://www.wheronart.com/.

If you haven’t already had a chance, head to downtown to see this new piece of art for yourself!

Don’t miss it at the August 10th Art & Wine Walk   – 2nd Thursday of the Month 5-9:15 pm. For Tickets see http://www.visitdowntownplano.com/winewalk/?mc_cid=2ce68f77e6&mc_eid=3f53ac9516

3-Day Portrait Workshop: Color May 19-21

WORKSHOP MAY copy

May 19, 20, 21
Workshop lead by Gene Dillard
At Rail Station Studios  1013 15th Place, Plano, Texas 75074
9:00 am till 4:00 pm

Seems the most common challenge for aspiring (and sometimes accomplished) portrait painters is the mystery and mastery of color especially when it comes to skin tones. In this workshop we will not only study the theory of color but some very direct hands-on mixing techniques. The subtle blends of warm and cool temperatures can bring magic to a face because flesh color is not the color of flesh it it the color of light reflecting on a face…a very different idea.

We will be painting three different models, each with distinctly different skin tones. These exercises should be fun for both accomplished painters and those early in the struggle with color.

Cost for workshop is $300. A $100 deposit is required to hold your place in the workshop. Payment can be made online at www.legacyportraitpainters.com  (WORKSHOPS)

Plano Art Association closing its gallery facility

Update regarding
Plano Art Association
Gallery Facility

As many of you know, PAA has discontinued occupancy
of it’s gallery space at EastSide Village in the
Arts District in Downtown Plano.

Circumstances related to a major increase in the lease
renewal rate made it impossible for the association to afford
continued  occupancy. Every attempt was made to negotiate a responsible path forward to retain the space, but to no avail.

Going forward, the association will certainly continue
to inspire and encourage its member artists and achieve
the mission of the organization:

“The Plano Art Association is dedicated to
encouraging the visual arts development of the
membership, and inspiring awareness of the visual arts
by sharing the joy, passion and beauty
within and beyond our Plano community.”

New venues are being explored for regular member meetings
and upcoming scheduled exhibits. We will keep everyone
informed as the options and opportunities are identified.

Although the gallery has been a milestone event in the
history of the Plano Art Association, the organization
has thrived for more than four decades and it will
certainly do so for decades to come. The closing of the
gallery comes very close to the end of term of our
current excellent leadership. We all look
forward to choosing a new executive team
that can build on the strong
accomplishments of the last few years.
Cheers,
Soheyla Rashidyan
President, Plano Art Association

DOWNTOWN PLANO ARTS DISTRICT SEARCHING FOR MURAL ARTISTS

The Plano Art Association and Historic Downtown Plano Association are looking for artists to paint three large murals in the Arts District. Call: DMP Call for Artists Press Release FINAL

PLANO, TX – Jan. 26, 2017 – The Downtown Mural Project began earlier this month with an open call for artists to leave a legacy in Downtown Plano by applying to paint three large murals in the Arts District. Interested artists can apply at callforentry.org under Plano Mural Project. The application is open from now until February 10.

The project has a budget of $68,000, which will cover compensation for the artists’ design and engineering services, materials, fabrication, installation, and any other costs related to the Downtown Mural Project. “This project is an incredible opportunity to use visual art to celebrate Plano’s rich history,” said Alex Hargis, the Executive Director for the Historic Downtown Plano Association. “We are so excited to collaborate with the artists to create something that will honor Plano’s heritage.”

All three murals will be inspired by historic photos of Plano that are currently being submitted by citizens, so that the Downtown Mural Project will engage the community and keep the murals current and personal to Plano residents. The project will culminate with a public unveiling ceremony and press event in downtown with city officials, residents, private sector leaders and regional art advocates in attendance.

To assist in the artist open call and overall project management of the mural installations, Plano Art Association has enlisted the help of Joshua King, Dallas-based artist and co-founder of Aurora. An advisory council has also been formed to ensure the historical accuracy and relevance of the murals. For more information on the Downtown Mural Project, visit www.planomural.com

About Plano Art Association The Plano Art Association was formed in 1969 as a non-profit organization, and continues to be a vital part of the community. Our purpose is to encourage the visual art development of members, advance visual art values in community projects, further art education, to encourage creative activities related to art, and to enhance visual art values in the Plano community and beyond.

About Historic Downtown Plano Association The Historic Downtown Plano Association is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 for the purpose of promoting tourism in the downtown neighborhood, preserving the district’s rich heritage and supporting the arts. 18st AIRSpace – Artist in residence program – 2017-2018

document

We are currently accepting applications for the 18st AIRSpace artist in residence program. Applications are due January 31, 2017 for residencies June 2017 – May 2018.

Please see the 18st AIRSpace link below for access to the application.

The 18st AIRSpace is the Plano Public Library System’s artist in residence program. The 18st AIRSpace provides hands-on opportunities for the artists and the community to engage with one another. The community can watch the artist at work, see the artist’s work on display, do the make and take activity and participate in depth hands-on workshops. The make and take activities are offered daily and the workshops are offered twice a month. Both components reflect the artistic style of the artist. The community gets to engage with the artists and experience different types of art for free. The 18st AIRSpace is housed at Harrington Library. Artists work at least 16 hours per week in the 18st AIRSpace when the library is open and are paid a stipend. There is also an allotment for materials. Residencies last one to three months. More information about the 18st AIRSpace can be found on our website under Art in the Library.

Relocation Sale & Coloring Party at Art Is Life Studio Nov. 19

Hey, this is Jenice. Art Is Life Studio is moving to Yeager Properties of Plano next month and I am having a sale and coloring party from 5-10 p.m. November 19 as a send off. Of course this is very bittersweet. The new co-working location has a lot of possibilities. But this location I have been in for almost 2 years has been a haven. I will still host and co-host events as well as pop-up art openings in this new space. I am really going to miss my Richardson location but see so much potential for the future at Yeager.

I will have art, some furniture and other items for sale. There will be plenty to color and we will have snacks. Please bring cash, if you can. I accept credit cards but will charge for the nominal fee I have to pay to use Square services. I really hope to see you, as this is a come-and-go event. If I tear up, I’m fine. I’m fine!

Donations and kind words for this move are accepted.

Where: Art Is Life Studio 1200 E Collins Blvd Ste 106, Richardson, Texas 75081

When: November 19, 2016 5pm – 10pm

THE OTHER STUFF IF YOU WANT TO READ:

You may wonder WHY PLANO? Well some folks were wondering WHY RICHARDSON, too. We live in North Garland, which isn’t far from either location and easily accessed for us. Contrary to what some may believe, I’ve had a lot of support from Plano-area folks and the Plano Chamber of Commerce has been a great part of that. I do recognize and appreciate the people from all over the Metroplex that have made the studio stay alive. There are art communities away from Dallas proper, even though we know Dallas is a huge, vibrant art city
