ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Experience various approaches to abstraction as you discover and develop your personal artistic signature. Learn the guidelines for color use, concept, composition and design as you stretch the boundaries of your imagination. Learn to trust your own creative instincts—be adventurous with hands and tools, sometimes leaving your brushes behind. Push the boundaries of your materials as well as your art. With guidance and support, you’ll be encouraged to experiment fearlessly and work on your own body of work with the mentoring required for your personal artistic development. Experiment and play your way to beautiful, original and expressive abstract/non-objective paintings.

Space is limited to 10 adult students.

Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Express Yourself: Landscape/Cityscape, a painting workshop with Michael Holter

VAST workshop Michael Holter

Express Yourself: Landscape/Cityscape,a painting workshop with Michael Holter,
April 10th – 12th, at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory, Denton, Texas 76202.

This workshop will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings of landscapes and cityscapes. You will paint from photographs and will explore the use of light and shadow to create interesting compositions and achieve dynamic results. We will work on basic perspective and how to appropriately incorporate figures into the painting.

We will examine the fundamentals of watercolor painting to assure that all students are familiar with the techniques. Daily discussions and application of the principles and elements of design will be woven into your painting experience.

Each day you will engage in exercises that will solidify the content that you are working on and spend time viewing other artists work. We will discuss the methods and the impact that these artists achieve using their techniques.

Michael will demonstrate his approach to creating landscapes and portraits and show you several high-speed video demonstrations. You will have ample time to successfully complete your own paintings.

Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the painting experience to individual needs.

From Herb Reed, past president of Southwestern Watercolor Society.
“For the past dozen years I have facilitated and/or participated in more than 20 watercolor workshops, as an officer of SWS and as a principal in a local gallery. Michael’s recent workshop on watercolor portraits was one of the top few that “really made a difference” in the way that I approach painting. Take it . . . you will learn about design and composition, techniques, and hints on taking reference photos — all for turning out terrific watercolor portraits.”
