José Ignacio Alvarado: Venezuelan Sculptor exhibit opens March 17 at Frisco Fine Art

Frisco Fine Art is excited to bring the work of Venezuelan sculptor José Ignacio Alvarado to North Texas. Please join us for an opening reception and to meet the artist on Saturday, March 17, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Alvarado, an architect and designer, was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1951. Throughout his distinguished career, he has been a university professor, the author of Arquitectura para todos (Architecture for All), a columnist at Diario Los Andes and a critic for Artefacto magazine. He has also taken part in ecological projects for zoos and botanical gardens.

Alvarado creates his sculptures out of metal ribbon, incorporating the space around the sculpture into the piece. The dance of the ribbon in the air creates a flowing figure which, when combined with color, results in a spiritual response from the viewer.

“Throughout my career as an architect, I satisfied people´s need for functionality. However, I have come to understand that mankind also needs to feel spiritual satisfaction, which has to be sought. This search is the focus of my work.”

Alvarado´s artwork has been exhibited in the U.S., Venezuela and Aruba.

Artistic Journeys: Explorations by pastel artists in Keller -reception Jan. 11

Artistic Journeys: A Coalition of members from the Pastel Society of the Southwest share their explorations of multiple mediums.

Keller Public Arts – January 10 through February 21, 2018
Keller Town Hall – 1100 Bear Creek Parkway, Keller TX 76248
An Evening with the Artists – Thursday, January 11, 2018; 7 to 9 pm

“We are primarily a group of pastel artists, excited by the rich color of the pastel stick and the joy we feel as we hold it in our hand and use it in our mark-making. As you peruse our art and read our statements, you will discover a common thread…we are artists in our souls and have been artists all our lives! Our journeys are varied – as are the mediums we have utilized along the way. This exhibit is a reflection of those exciting journeys as we continue to explore our visions and ideas in many different ways…through pencil…paint…and PASTEL!

JOHN HERRIN: Nature Mort

November 18 – December 30, 2017

Artist Reception: Saturday, November 18, 2017 From 5:00 – 8:00 PM

A small exhibition of still lives by Houston artist, John Herrin, will be on view at PDNB Gallery. After Hurricane Ike hit Houston, Herrin’s flower arrangements within his home took on a different character in darkness, resulting in the days long power outage. That was when he decided to photograph the flowers that his wife often brought to the house, beautifully inserted into unique vases from their collection. The exhibition highlights how Herrin pursues the beauty of nature with great technical and visual acumen.

A Priori Painting Exhibition: Jim Lively opening April 22 at Martsolf Lively

A Fresh Start

Martsolf Lively Contemporary

521 N. Interurban, Richardson, Texas 75081

A Priori Series of Paintings

by Jim Lively

April 22, 2017 – July 22, 2017

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 22, 2017, 6 to 9pm

Fashion designer, Paulette Martsolf and artist, Jim Lively brought their creative talents together to create an innovative concept of merging unique and original fashion with contemporary visual art. The concept gave birth to the endeavor known as “Allie – Coosh Lifestyle” and “Martsolf Lively Contemporary” where fashion gracefully and seamlessly collides with fine art. Previously, Paulette owned Allie-Coosh which featured her own creative fashion for twenty-four years located in Snider Plaza. Due to escalating rent, she decided to renovate the building she owned near downtown Richardson which housed her manufacturing. The renovations resulted in an industrial chic venue which now houses both her manufacturing, a fashion boutique, art gallery and artist studio.

Customed TailoredAs the renovations began to unfold, Jim contemplated as to what might be an appropriate theme for a series of paintings to christen the new venue. After some thought, he kept being drawn back to his days in college where he had the luxury of studying philosophy. Jim was always intrigued by the concept of a priori which may be defined as relating to or denoting reasoning or knowledge that proceeds from theoretical deduction rather than from observation or experience.

The first painting in this series is entitled “Fresh Start” which is an abstract piece that incorporates imaginary asymmetrical shapes into what appear to be wood grain slats. By its title, the painting is not dependent upon past experience but instead is forward looking and intended to be somewhat unique. Several of the pieces in the series such as the whimsically titled “Little Black Dress” embraces the theme of the Allie – Coosh Lifestyle and Martsolf Lively Contemporary of where fashion collides with art.

The exhibit runs from April 8 to May 13. The opening reception and presentation of awards will take place on Saturday, April 8, from 3:00 to 6:00. On Sunday, April 9, the gallery will be open from 1:00 to 5:00, with artist demonstrations from 2:00 to 4:00.

Flatbed Press is pleased to present New Cuban Color: Prints by Limonta, Mederos, and Valdes in the O2 Project Gallery space. Organized by Alfredo Felipe Valdes, works in this exhibition utilize the human form as a symbolic vehicle to explore moments of human experience: birth, death, love, or the idea of origin and guilt in our Western tradition. From the intricately textured collagraphs of Isolina Limonta to the expressive and painterly monoprints of Yordanis Garmendia Mederos and Alfredo Felipe Valdes, this exhibition captures a wonderful glimpse of the contemporary printmaking happening in Cuba today.

Tyler Shields: Provocateur opens Jan. 7

Samuel Lynne Galleries is pleased to invite you to the opening reception for photographer Tyler Shields’ exhibition “Provocateur” on January 7, 2017 from 5-8pm. Shields will be in attendance at the opening reception, which will also serve as a launch for his latest book Provocateur. The exhibition will be on view until February 11, 2017.

Tyler Shields is known for his unique brand of volatile and off-handed celebrity photography and has come to be recognized as “Hollywood’s Favorite Photographer.” The meaning behind his work goes so much deeper than the famous faces and materials inhabiting it. Often using dark and controversial subject matter, his photography challenges convention, forcing the viewer to contemplate the true nature of human existence.

Jay Bolotin: The Book of Only Enoch

Flatbed Press in Austin is pleased to present The Book of Only Enoch, a portfolio of 20 woodcut and relief etchings, and selected plates used to create the prints.

JANUARY 13 – MARCH 11, 2017
January 20, 2017 6-8PM RECEPTION

Bolotin tells the story of Only Enoch, a sensitive Jewish boy from Kentucky who is named after an apocryphal book left out of the Hebrew Bible whose protagonist “went to heaven and lived to tell the tale.” The viewer enters a world inhabited by people, flora, fauna, and heretofore unknown forms and spaces. And in ways that may remind us of epic story-tellers including William Blake and Lewis Carroll, Bolotin combines words and images to create worlds with their own logic, in order to tell captivating, bizarre and dreamlike stories.

Bolotin’s visual work is included in many public and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; PAFA (Philadelphia); The University of Richmond Museum, Smith College Museum, and the Australian National Museum. He grew up in rural Kentucky.

The Book of Only Enoch is an ingredient in an ongoing trilogy of motion pictures called The Jackleg Testament, all constructed from Bolotin’s visual work. Part one of The Jackleg Testament – Jack & Eve, a woodcut motion picture, won Best Animation at the Santa Fe Film Festival, 2007.

Bolotin will give a brief performance at the reception, at 6:00 PM, Friday, January 20th, consisting of songs and a short film titled Kharmen, which combines a famous aria from the opera, Carmen, and the short stories of Russian absurdist writer, Daniil Kharms.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Landmarks (UT Austin). Organized and circulated by the University of Richmond Museums, Virginia, the exhibition is made possible in part with funds from the Louis S. Booth Arts Fund.

OPENING RECEPTION November 12, 2016; 6-8pm Artists will be in attendance

Common Language exhibits work by West Texas artists Suzi Davidoff and Rachelle Thiewes, collaborating together as Razi Projects. In addition to this monumental collaboration, the exhibition includes individual works on paper and sculptural kinetic jewelry by Davidoff and Thiewes, respectively.

A special viewing of the Common Languages twin-screen projection will take place throughout the evening of the Artist’s Reception.

Suzi Davidoff’s multi-media works on paper explore themes of structure and perception of the natural world, often incorporating found organic materials collected on walks within the West Texas Chihuahuan desert.

Rachelle Thiewes creates jewelry that is designed to engage and challenge the wearer, making them an active participant, an initiator of sounds and body rhythms.
