Oil Painting Workshop for Adults with Chris Brandley

Morning Sweets

This workshop takes place in the beautiful, historic town of Grapevine, Texas September 16 & 17, 2016.

Our 2 days together will include step by step demonstrations, one on one individual easel time, and fun exercises to learn how to loosen up and create bold, colorful paintings.

I use the “Alla Prima” method of painting (working wet into wet) and I will teach you how to layer with transparent and opaque oils, and how to keep your paints from getting muddy. We will work on technique, color mixing, composition, light, and brush strokes. Students will learn to see “Impressionistically” and explore to ability to “suggest” rather than “render” the subject.

Come prepared to have a relaxing, fun-filled learning experience. This class is for all levels of painting from beginners to advanced! For more information and to register, click here.

Artist VET is the curator. Included artists are Brenda Klein, Dee Merrell, Heather Pregger, Debbie Snider, Beth Swider and VET.

String art  for Tight Rope is done by wrapping thread, yarn, and cord or embroidery floss around nails. The fibers can be applied in a defined pattern or totally random format. Designs can can also be woven in and out producing several layers of fibers.

Tight Rope progress will be documented and posted on-line. Participants will be listed and acknowledged during opening reception. Tina Bohlman Landscape demo for DeSoto April 30

Tina Bohlman

This month we are once again privileged to host Tina Bohlman! A Texas native, Tina Bohlman has used the state in which she was raised as both the inspiration and the canvas for her art.tinabohlmanphoto Mostly a self-taught artist, Bohlman works primarily in watercolor and occasionally in oil to create her breathtaking plein air paintings and brilliant rural landscapes.

Almost every day, you can find me on location.  I believe to be able to  paint a subject, an artist has to know it.  For a landscape artist, direct observation on location is the primary way to become knowledgeable; to see the light and how it falls upon…or illuminates… a building or ground plane.
tinabohlmanmission

She cultivated her natural artistic talent and her eye for beauty with great dedication and an insatiable desire to learn the techniques and history of the art.  Bohlman has supplemented her independent study with workshops with some of the best artists in the field, including Jan Kuntz, Tom Lynch,  Irving Shapiro and Jill Carver.  This has served her well because as she describes, watercolor is a challenging medium.  A veteran of numerous competition plein air and “quick draw” events annually, including, Plein Air Southwest-Outdoor Painters Society, Sedona Plein Air Festival-Sedona, Arizona, and Paint The Parks-Estes Park, Colorado, she prefers plein air rather than working in the studio.

Low water crossing, Dove Creek

“I have been an outdoor painter for most of my art career. Nothing compares for inspiration and capturing light and emotion. Aware that my time in a particular moment is short, Plein Air in watercolor requires strong technical skills and a large measure of intestinal fortitude.  As the light moves, moment by moment, across the sky, every stroke must be without hesitation.  It’s a marathon race with the sun; spirited, emotional…and exhausting.  I love it!”

The Old Jail

With this dedicated attitude and her skills and talent, Bohlman has made quite an impact in her field.  Over the past thirty-five years, she has earned more than 60 awards, including a dozen First Place and four Best in Show titles.  In addition to exhibiting, competition events and taking commissions for her work, she is the founder and chairman of the annual “Paint HistoricWaxahachie”, a plein air event that showcases more than 50 artists.  Her work is collected worldwide; Bohlman originals hang in private and corporate collections in 34 States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Republic of Benin, West Africa.
