In the fall of 2010, I signed up for a local life drawing class and arrived with a box of cheap oil pastels I’d had lying around my studio for years. Much to my surprise, I found that I love their colorful mark making possibilities. I feel I am painting and drawing at once … what could be better!
I still sometimes draw with models as I like the spontaneity and energy that goes with working from life. I have also been working on portraits of mass transit riders in the DART system, which I use extensively to get around the Dallas area. I’m intrigued by the variety of people that ride the trains and buses each day. The resulting portraits have been extremely challenging and fun.
