Mediums taught have included oil, watercolor, pastel and acrylic painting as well as graphite drawing. Skills taught include drawing and painting from life and photographs, using observation rather than formulas. Instruction in landscape, portraiture and still life subject matter with realistic representation stressed. Deborah studied in France with Parisian artist Alexandra Georgeon-Colin for seven years, acquiring detailed studio instruction while working from life. Workshops with Timothy Wells focused on landscape plein-air painting in watercolor. Deborah was chosen to succeed Wells as teacher for the plein-air workshops in England, France and Italy. She started her studies of portraiture and figurative work with master artist, Anthony Ryder in 2007 and continued an intensive study at the Ryder Studio in Santa Fe. Throughout her career, Deborah has focused on drawing and painting in a  classical representational style, working from life, sprinkled with forays into semi-abstraction from time to time.

In this workshop we will concentrate largely on UNIFYING A PAINTING by working on achieving color harmony. This will not be a “color workshop,” as I don’t believe that color is THE most important thing in a painting. However, color harmony is many times the thing a person who views a painting will love about it and not even realize it. We will not be using a “mother color” and adding it to every color we mix; instead we will focus on what I call “bending a color.” Also in the workshop, composition, focal point and ways to lead the eye around the painting will also be stressed to further unify a painting.

Painting is more than a vocation,”My paintings are direct observations, results of a life and heritage spent close to the Land, the People, the West. It’s a calling to satisfy a deep desire to speak in a visual medium, telling stories; all the time looking West”. My ability to portray these subjects is not without its own struggle. Painting is hard work, but I’m committed to improving my ability to communicate the story in a passionate way, with honesty and vitality that the subject deserves.

David grew up in Lubbock, Texas. After studying Fine Art at Texas Tech University, he was invited to attend the first Illustrators Workshop New York, where for two years he studied with Bernie Fuchs, Mark English, and Bob Peak. His work was recognized many times by the Illustrators Annual national show during the 1970-80’s In 1985, he began to devote full time to painting professionally, sharing a studio with Bart Forbes for the next 10 years. He also studied with Bettina Steinke and James Reynolds.

In addition to having his work featured in magazines articles including Cowboys and Indians, Victoria, Dallas Morning News, Western Art Collector, Southwest Art ( cover and feature Oct.2013) and corporate collections,

Presentation by Artist Lisa Adams Reed at the VAST February Meeting

Lisa Adams Reed banner 100 dpi

You are invited to a Feb. 2nd presentation by painter Lisa Adams Reed. Reed lives in New Mexico and is represented by galleries in Dallas, Santa Fe, Farmington, NM, Crested Butte, CO., and Watkins Glenn, NY.

Lisa Adams Reed’s artist statement:
“I have very secretly seen myself as an artist since I was a small child. I always knew my creativity would dominate my life and in this final third I am all in! Although it’s been quite the leap to go from being an executive for a Fortune 200 company to the world of art, I have never once looked back.”

“I was blessed by a stroke that left me blind in one eye a few years ago. Funny how it made me see things differently and has made me have an even greater desire to paint the world from this unique perspective.”

“I discovered my favorite juicy medium when I first opened a jar of cold wax and mixed it with oil. It was like painting with yummy canned frosting! The many layers that I apply, then intuitively scrape away, always reveals beautiful surprises underneath. So much like life.”

“My paintings are SoulScapes. Since jumping into painting 100% in my 60s, I have been fortunate enough to be included and featured in many shows, and won more awards than I could have dreamed.”

To find out more about Lisa Adams Reed, see: http://lisaadamsreed.com/

When:  February 2nd, 2017, from 7 – 9 p.m.

Where:  Patterson-Appleton Arts Center

Known for her bold, impressionistic florals and large container gardens that are immediately eye-catching, Nancy teaches throughout the US and Europe, sharing a loose, bright technique that evokes brilliant color.

Nancy’s love of art and gardening originated on her childhood farm in Scurry, Texas, where her parents were organic gardeners. Her earliest memories are of standing barefoot beneath 11 foot sunflower stalks in her family’s garden. Nancy studied art history and illustration at the University of London, King’s College, Chelsea, and oil painting and color theory at Texas A&M University. Today she resides with her husband and their 4 pugs in Flower Mound, Texas, where she paints daily from Flower Mound Art Studio.

Oil Painting Workshop with Chris Brandley for Adults

This workshop takes place in the beautiful, historic town of Grapevine, Texas September 23 & 24, 2016.

Our 2 days together will include step by step demonstrations, one on one individual easel time, and fun exercises to learn how to loosen up and create bold, colorful paintings.

I use the “Alla Prima” method of painting (working wet into wet) and I will teach you how to layer with transparent and opaque oils, and how to keep your paints from getting muddy. We will work on technique, color mixing, composition, light, and brush strokes. Students will learn to see “Impressionistically” and explore to ability to “suggest” rather than “render” the subject.

Come prepared to have a relaxing, fun-filled learning experience. This class is for all levels of painting from beginners to advanced! For more information and to register, click here.

He teaches his method to people from ages 5 to 105.  His classes are held at many locations all over, in Colorado, on a cruise ship to Alaska, all over the DFW area and every year he holds a week long workshop in Port Aransas, Texas.

Christy Kidwell Oil Demo on Feb. 23 in Irving

Guest artist at the Tuesday, February 23rd meeting of the Irving Art Association will be artist Christy Kidwell.  She will be demonstrating her oil painting style in landscape, figurative or coastal subjects.

The Mixer with refreshments starts at 6:45 pm and the Meeting at 7:00 pm at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts in Irving. Artists, don’t forget to bring art for the Artist of the Month competition and donations for the Silent Auction by 6:45. Guests are welcome. Directions.

Christy Kidwell is a native Texan.  She grew up in Houston along the banks of Buffalo Bayou which served as a natural playground.  She has lived in Dallas since graduating from Southern Methodist University in 1974.  As  ACA’s workshop coordinator for 10 years, she was able to continue her studies with such nationally recognized artists as Everett Raymond Kinstler, Dan Gerhartz, Scott Burdick, Kevin Macpherson, Harley Brown, Matt Smith, Charles Sovek and many others.  Now her portrait commissions and paintings can be found in private collections throughout the United States.

A love for nature has led her to broaden her studio to the great outdoors.  Armed with a pochade box and backpack she now adds landscape to her regular portrait and figure sessions.  “My paints travel with me everywhere.  They have ridden on a raft through the Grand Canyon and gone by horseback along trails in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana.  Painting is my way of connecting with the world around me and sharing those experiences along the way.”  Color, texture and light are the essence of her paintings, all defined with a loose brushstroke, yet representational of the person or moment in time.

Kidwell is a current signature member of the Outdoor Painters Society and has been a signature member of the Association of Creative Artists since 1994.  She has exhibited and won awards in many local as well as national competitions.  For five consecutive years she had paintings juried into the Salon International Competition.  In 2013 and 2014 her art was juried into the American Women Artists national competition.  Twice she was a finalist in the Artist’s Magazine Annual Competition.  Her painting, “The Gossips”, was chosen for the 2005 limited-edition wall calendar.  She has done featured demonstrations for many art clubs in Texas.  Currently, she is represented by galleries in Dallas, Port Aransas and Montana.
