On Creativity…
In Oaxaca creativity is not just something people pursue, it’s imbedded in how they live their lives. I’m here this week for Dia de
los Muertos and can’t help but feel I’m a lucky particle inside a kaleidoscope of colors, shapes, tastes, sounds, aromas and rhythms.
Expression is everywhere and is valued as a vital part of life. You can thank the indigenous cultures which are the main ingredient (with a dash of colonialism) of this artful living. Whether it’s hand-painting colorful wooden sculptures with an agave paintbrush, shaping black pottery, hand weaving intricate textiles or cooking one of the seven famed mole dishes, “doing” and “making” are intertwined with being.
In Oaxaca there is a beautiful union between the sacred and the everyday, and nowhere is that more expressed in its Dia de los Muertos festival. During this time the living come together to rejoice the return of their ancestors. The joy, humility and devotion is present throughout the celebration.
If you want to partake in creativity on steroids, come to Oaxaca and expect to be bewitched.

Considering the Artist Seminar

An established artist will be invited to share his or her insights into the Figure Drawing motif. The sessions will be an opportunity for participants to become acquainted with various and different approaches to working from the model. These sessions will begin with the invited artist giving a brief presentation, with images of his or her work, that explains the way in which he or she approaches the observation-based drawing situation. The artist will, for instance, discuss his or her choice of pose, length of pose, materials, size of drawing, vocabulary and types and degrees of abstractions employed. The presentation will be followed by three hours of drawing where participants draw alongside the invited artist.
