JOHN HERRIN: Nature Mort opens Nov. 18 at PDNB

John Herrin, Flower 6B, 2008

JOHN HERRIN: Nature Mort

November 18 – December 30, 2017

Artist Reception: Saturday, November 18, 2017 From 5:00 – 8:00 PM

A small exhibition of still lives by Houston artist, John Herrin, will be on view at PDNB Gallery. After Hurricane Ike hit Houston, Herrin’s flower arrangements within his home took on a different character in darkness, resulting in the days long power outage. That was when he decided to photograph the flowers that his wife often brought to the house, beautifully inserted into unique vases from their collection. The exhibition highlights how Herrin pursues the beauty of nature with great technical and visual acumen.

Artist reception is Saturday, November 18 from 5 – 8 pm.

Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery is a fine art gallery dedicated to photo-based art. We are now located at 154 Glass Street, Ste. 104, across the Dallas Contemporary. The gallery opened its original Uptown location in 1995. Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM

PDNB Gallery also revisits the archive of John Albok to exhibit photographs by this New York artist that are unfamiliar yet timeless. Depictions of New York City during the 1930’s – 1950’s, show Americans living through the Great Depression to more promising times of the 1950’s in the iconic Metropolis.

Presentation by Artist Kim Collins Nov. 1 in Denton

You are invited to a presentation by Artist Kim Collins sponsored by the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST), on Wednesday, November 1st from 7-9 p.m. at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E Hickory St, Denton, TX.

Ms. Collins is a Fort Worth, TX abstract artist whose work is heavily influenced by the tangled forms, interwoven patterns and layers of shapes found in nature.

She has exhibited in numerous galleries in the North TX area and has won several awards. Her work is in collections across the US and in Europe. She is also a member of the Texas Artist’s Coalition & Trinity Arts Guild.

Kim Collins Artist Statement: ““My work has evolved over the years from realistic watercolors to abstract designs in acrylic and mixed media.  The likely catalyst for this change was a bout with cancer which brought about many “rethinking what’s important” moments.  I realized I had been working with processes which were rigid, traditional and a bit tedious for me, but I was afraid to break out of my box.  After the cancer scare, I allowed myself the freedom to have fun, try new things, get out of my comfort zone and play with design, color and materials.  I have never looked back.”

“I usually start a piece with no pre-conceived idea of what it will ultimately become, but a sort of “relational connection” develops as the work progresses.  Sometimes the relationship is easy and harmonious; sometimes it is full of conflict which must be resolved…just like life.  Rather than depict a literal image, I hope to convey the feeling, energy and essence of the organic forms which inspire me.”

The presentation is free for VAST members; $5 for guests.

Dallas Arboretum Presents Artscape Reimagined 2017 With More than 100 Artists

DALLAS, Texas (January 24, 2017) — From April 29 to 30, the Dallas Arboretum hosts Artscape Reimagined 2017, a juried fine art and fine craft show and sale that brings together more than 100 outstanding artists from around the country in one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, according to Architectural Digest. A special members preview will be held on April 28 before it opens to the public April 29 and 30.

Artscape Chair Kaki Hopkins said, “Set amidst an explosion of spring color, Artscape will transform the Dallas Arboretum’s Pecan Grove into a unique gallery of artistic creations. The event offers our guests the opportunity to both view and acquire beautiful works of art.”

The show features a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, 2-D and 3-D mixed media, photography, fiber, ceramics and more.  This year’s event features a significant increase in the number of artists showing and selling fine arts and crafts. New this year will be a University Zone with artwork from students and faculty. In addition, Dallas galleries will display and sell select artwork in the historic DeGolyer House.

In addition to Artscape, guests will be able to enjoy ZimSculpt, a world renowned exhibition of modern Zimbabwean stone sculptures, which will also be beautifully incorporated in the garden as the largest collection ever featured in the southern U.S. with more than 100 hand-carved pieces, which are available to view and to purchase. Two Zimbabwean artists will also demonstrate their artistry as they carve stone into modern sculptures.

On May 12 at 6 p.m. at Dallas Arboretum’s Rosine Hall, Artscape continues with an inaugural celebratory awards dinner and auction to honor a top arts contributor. Betty Crawford and Frankie Horn are co-chairing the dinner, and Heritage Auctions will host the live and online auctions.

Led by Hopkins, key committee members include David Dike of David Dike Fine Art; Brian Shivers, Dallas Arboretum past board chairman; Patricia Meadows, well known arts consultant and appraiser; Robert Bellamy of Robert Bellamy Designs; Salvador Impastato of Studio Outside; Michael Faircloth of Michael Faircloth Designs; Gail Sachson of Ask Me About Art; Judy Gibbs and Michael Jenkins, both community leaders, among others. More information can be found at http://www.dallasarboretum.org/visit/seasonal-festivals-events/artscape.

A members-only preview will take place on Friday, April 28 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Reservations will be required. Members will have a chance to preview and shop at a sneak peek before Artscape opens to the public on Saturday, April 29.

Among many artists of note who have juried into this year’s show include Brad Oldham (sculpture); Jim Bowman, Carlyn Ray (both glass); Elizabeth Anyaa, Valerie Guignol (both fiber); and Lynn Armstrong (ceramics).

Art and Nature in the Middle Ages opens Dec. 4 at the DMA

artandnature1

Spanning the 12th to early 16th centuries, Art and Nature in the Middle Ages explores the diverse modes of expression and variety of representations of nature in European medieval art, whether plant or animal, sacred or profane, real or imagined, highlighting the continuities and changes. The exhibition, featuring work from the Musée de Cluny, musée national du Moyen Âge, Paris, and on view exclusively at the DMA in the United States, presents more than 100 extraordinary objects, rarely before shown in the United States, that reflect the wide range of styles, techniques, and iconography that flourished during this period. The featured works of art—which include an astonishing array of media, from stained glass windows to illuminated manuscripts—emphasize the fundamental bond between humans and nature, and nature’s constant presence in the immediate environment and spiritual life of men and women in the Middle Ages.

Art and Nature in the Middle Ages will require a $16 special exhibition ticket.  https://www.dma.org/art/exhibitions/art-and-nature-middle-ages

DUETS: A Comparison of Realities at Fort Works Art

duetslogo

Exhibition: November 15 – December 30

Opening Reception: November 19 from 6-9PM

FORT WORKS ART will open Duets a Comparison of Realities on November 15, 2016. The exhibition will feature Tim Okamura, Sergio Garcia and Alonsa Guevara, artists with international credentials, superior talent and global recognition. Riley Holloway, Dan Lam and Lauren Childs will exhibit new works created for this visual conversation between their contemporary kinsmen.

Three pairs of artists will reveal, compare and contrast their ideas of art making. The various styles and concepts incorporated in the show are united through each artist’s provocative voice, the way they handle materials and the statements they choose to create.

timokamura

Tim Okamura and Riley Holloway are figurative artists that depict the power of women, minority populations and family. Okamura is a contemporary painter that paints his subjects in urban settings and uses a combination of graffiti and realism. Okamura has a long list of achievements that include commendation by United States Vice President Joe Biden, placement in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and finalist in the Outwin Boochever award for Portraiture.

rileyholloway2

Riley Holloway creates portraits on oil and wood panel. His distinctive style combines loose brushstrokes, charcoal, text and texture. He developed his signature style while working in Florence. In 2012 he completed an art residency with the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas and was a finalist in 2015 for the Hunting Prize.

sergiogarcia6

Sergio Garcia and Dan Lam are sculptors contrasting the link between reality and ambiguity. Garcia’s recent figural work is convincingly realistic and unsettlingly funny. The technical fluency of Garcia’s work and symbols never seize to conjure up questions of how and why.

danlam

Dan Lam, a millennial artist with soaring popularity recently closed “Coquette” at Fort Works Art that featured 90 pieces of sculpture. Her foam and resin pieces were developed while pursuing an MFA at Arizona State University. Lam’s art has been published twice in New American Paintings and featured on Insider.

alonsaguevara2

Alonsa Guevara and Lauren Childs are painters that understand and represent the cycles of nature and life in their work. Each of these women began art making at the age of 12. They each developed hyperbolic attributes, pushing the boundaries of color and texture.

Alonsa Guevara’s seven years of living in the Ecuadorian jungle is the source of ceaseless inspiration that manifests in lush depictions of nature through a vivid palette. Guevara was recognized with the New York Academy Art Fellowship in 2014 and named Time Out New York’s five most important new artists.

Lauren Childs is an award-winning artist with work that is published and shown throughout Texas and New York. Childs was a winner of the Siglo de Oro International Competition and was most recently a finalist in the show “Face It: Brooklyn,” juried by Managing Editor of ARTnews, Annette Rose-Shapiro. Her work continues to explore issues of the human condition. Childs is the owner of Fort Works Art. Her days are spent painting, developing shows for the gallery and inspiring a new generation of artists.
