About the Curator: Leon Robertson is a self-taught artist that works with primarily pen
and ink illustration. He has explored mixed media using found objects to create a series
titled, The Junkyard Birds. Because so much of his art is inspired by the use of language,
stories often unfold with his art. It is the reason why he prefers to work in an open-series
format. His work has been exhibited in local shows and galleries. Several of the
characters from his ARF & Soul Dog series were published in the book, 1000 Dog
Portraits: From the People Who Love Them. Leon’s passion for art, design and all things
creative was demonstrated in nearly two decades of working in the fashion and home
luxury retail markets.

Winners of the 2017 Southwestern Watercolor Society Membership Exhibition

BEST of SHOW: “AND OFF to the PARK WE GO” by Ingrid Albrecht

All awards can be found by clicking the link below:
2017 SWS 54th Membership
Exhibition Awards Catalog

Juror was Keiko Tenabe

Congratulations to the following SWS artists who achieved Signature status with their acceptance into the 54th SWS Membership Exhibition: Anne Beletic, Dave Carlson, Kathy Elliott, Suzanne Galloway, Karen Harrington, Mollie Jones, Carol Peterson, and Val Wright

Major awards – more can be found listed in the catalog:

Our 54th Annual Membership Exhibition awards reception was held on Sunday, September 24. Guests seemed to enjoy the sweet & savory hors d’oeuvres, drinks & taking in all the beautiful art to the jazz tunes of Paul Utay’s band. We were able to change the layout and accommodate seating for 135. We had 185 in attendance. Some from as far away as Minnesota!
Many vendor gifts were awarded, several past members were honored with Memorial awards and
SWS awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, as well as, a new award named “The President’s Award” which
was funded by past SWS Presidents to the tune if $500. We also awarded $1,000 to Alicia Farris
for the Edgar Whitney Transparent Watercolor Award and a $1,500 prize to our Naomi Brotherton,
Best of Show to Ingrid Albrecht for her intriguing And Off To The Park We Go watercolor piece! In
total we awarded over $12,000! But, the icing on the cake was likely that our dear Naomi Brotherton won 1st place…she is quite the effervescent artist at 97!
The show was hung for the month of September at the lovely Eisemann Center in Richardson,
Texas.
Many patrons of the arts were able to enjoy our art as they took in other shows there. A number of reception guests commented how this was likely our strongest show ever. Congratulations are in order, again, to everyone in the Exhibition. We hope even more of our members will take the opportunity to enter next year!

Irving Arts Center presents the 17th Annual Art Connection Members Show – Reception July 16

All You Need is Love & Art: 17th Annual Art Connection Members Show

July 15 – September 16
Irving Arts Center
Main Gallery3333 North MacArthur Blvd.
Irving, TX 75062

Two and three dimensional art works by artists of all ages are on view as part of the Art Connection visual arts membership program. All current Art Connection members who wish to participate are eligible.  Entry fee is $5 per work and artists may submit up to two pieces of work.  Prizes are presented in three categories: Youth, Non-Professional and Professional with an overall “Best of Show” prize also awarded.

Thematic Challenge: All You Need is Love & Art
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of “The Summer of Love” and Irving Arts Center’s “Summer of ’17,” participating artists are invited to create artwork which explores the theme of “All You Need is Love & Art.” Characterized by the spirit of revolution and social change, the 1960s were a turbulent and exciting time.  Through the works of those artists who choose to find inspiration in this theme, we hope to capture a bit of the culture, music and art of this most groovy decade.   Special prizes will be awarded to member artists who choose to compete in this category (note – this is completely optional).
