Wrenwood explores the majesty of mountains, the intricacies of a single flower, and the details and impressions that make life the interesting show that it is.  Renee is an award-winning local artist.  She loves the surprises that water media present; the way the paint and water move upon the paper are part of the thrill of creating. The freshness and beauty of her watercolors express the gloriousness of nature.

McKinney Juried Art Competition & Exhibition – $10,500 in Prizes

The City of McKinney and McKinney Performing Arts Center is currently seeking submissions to our 6th Annual ‘Unique by Nature’ Juried Art Competition and Exhibition. This event was created to build a public and permanent art collection for the McKinney Performing Arts Center located in Historic Downtown McKinney.

Deadline: March 17,2017

Cash and purchase prizes totaling $10,500 will be distributed as follows:

  • One large scale work will be awarded an $8,000 Purchase Prize and will become part of MPAC’s permanent and public art collection. Eligible pieces must be 36″ or more in one dimension. To be considered for the Purchase Prize, artists must submit an online application. There is a $25 application fee to submit 3 works. All fees will be applied to prize pool and scholarships.
  • $2,500 in prize moneywill be divided among 5 works of art chosen by the judge including one Young Artist Award. Size restrictions apply. Artists interested in submitting work to be considered for the Cash Prize must deliver their submissions in person on Saturday, March 25. There is a $20 application fee to submit 2 works. All fees will be applied to prize pool and scholarships.



Other Considerations:

  • 2017 Purchase Prize submissions will be juried by a four-person panel. 10 semi-finalists will be selected in consideration for the Purchase Prize.
  • Prize winners will be chosen by 2017 judge, Robert Jessup, Chair of the Department of Studio Art at UNT, College of Visual Arts & Design.
  • ‘Unique by Nature’ is open to professional and emerging artists who are legal residents of the United States and at some point have been residents of Texas.
  • Entrants must be at least 17 years of age by May 2017.
  • Artists may price their work for sale during the exhibit. Sales will be handled by MPAC minus a 25% commission. All commissions collected by McKinney Performing Arts Center will be used to purchase additional art work or to fund future competitions.
  • Staff and volunteers will use care in handling the work; however, we are not responsible for losses or damages. Artists may consider insuring their work based on its value.

Join VAGF members at Expedition Frisco (9073 Berkshire Dr. Frisco, TX 75033) for the monthly meeting.  September 13, Tuesday 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Misty Oliver-Foster, owner of the working studio Fresh Paint, teacher, lecturer and artist will take us through the process of making public art. She plans to relate to us how she did it , why she did it and how long it took to create a public art mural in McKinney, Texas.

We also will have a mini-critique. Bring a piece of artwork (framing not necessary) and it can even be work-in -progress for a friendly feedback. We will draw for a prize at the meeting for participating artists.

Come join in for a fun, creative night. Members and visitors are welcome.

FRESH LOOK – A Woodworking Extravaganza May 7


On Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 10:00 – 6:00 p.m., the Heard-Craig Center for the Arts plays host to FRESH LOOK-A Woodworking Extravaganza.  Held between the Main House and the Carriage House, the woodworking event showcases multiple wood venues such as refinishing, furniture facelifts, turning, carving, fretwork, jewelry, ornaments, inlays, block printing, etc.

Come for a stroll in downtown McKinney and spend some time browsing the vendors and wood artisans who are well known for their expertise in their field.  A tour of the fretwork and turned banisters in the Main House will be held at 1:00 p.m.  Location: 205 W Hunt Street, McKinney, TX  75069.  For more information, call the Heard-Craig Center at 972-569-6909.



Tickets are being sold for CHILDREN’s WOOD MAKING in the Carriage House and all other artisan events are at no cost.   The Children’s Wood Making sessions start every hour, beginning at 9:00 a.m. (one event at 9:00, one at 10:00, one at 11:00, one at 1:00, one at 2:00, etc).   The workshop cost, per child, is $9.00 and tickets must be purchased in advance so that supplies can be ordered.   On the ticket page, select which time slot your child will be attending.  While your child is creating a wood project, you can stroll leisurely through the Heard-Craig property, meeting the wood artisans and talking with experts in their field.

Additionally, there will be woodworking DEMOS on the Main Stage in front of the Carriage House.  The Demos start at 10:00 a.m. and run each hour.  Demos are FREE and open to the Public.  We do encourage registration for the free demos for planning purposes.

2016 Collin County Adult Art Show & Student Art Show receptions March 18


March 18-20, 2016

Hosted by the Art Club of McKinney, the 2016 Collin County Adult Art Show & Student Art Show will be open March 18-20. Preparation for the shows begins on March 16 when adult artists bring their artwork to the First United Methodist Church Auditorium, upper level. Students will bring their artwork to the lower level of the same building. Reception and Awards will be March 18, 2016 Friday, 7pm 9pm at FUMC.  http://www.theartclubmckinney.com/

The judge for the Adult Art Show is David A. Collins. A prolific producing artist, hecreates works on commission for many Dallas area businesses.The awards will be given out at his sole descretion. If he does not see fit to award a category, that is also at his discretion.

David has an MFA Studio Arts in Painting and a Secondary in Printmaking – Magna Cum Laude. He is passionate about Art, honesty of material, economy of stroke, emergence and expression. Visit his website at: http://www.pikore.com/delajunta_studios.

The judge for the Student Art Show is Dr. Jeffrey Fontana.

Dr. Jeffrey Fontana is Associate Professor and Harry E. Smith Distinguished Teaching Professor in Art History at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he is currentlly Chair of the Art and Art History Department. He has also taught at institutions including Colgate University, Vassar College, Florida State University, and Boston College. He teaches courses on the entire history of Western art, with topics ranging from the history of beautyy in art to the history of the art of comicbooks. His primary research field is the Italian Renaissance, and his focus is on the paintings of Federico Barocci, one of the leading Italian painters from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In the spring of 2012 he served as drawing consultant for the exhibition on Barocci’s painting, Madonna of the Snow, at the Ducal Palace in Urbana, Italy. He has published articles on the Florentine painter Fra Bartolommeo in Master Drawings, and on Barocci in the Burklington Magazine. He is also currently preparing articles on different responses to the Renaissance in French and American art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
