Sharon Giles is a Texas artist, native to the DFW area. She loves to experiment with all media, but admits to a preference for watercolor’s unpredictability and transparency. Her latest interests are mixed media collage, experimental painting, printmaking and marbling. See her artist’s website at SharonGilesArt.com.

She also serves as the webmaster for the Irving Art Association website (http://irvingart.org) and Art News DFW (http://ArtNewsDFW.com), a site focusing on art activities in North Texas. She publishes two free email newsletters: Art News DFW Daily and Art News DFW Weekly.

Suminagashi (Japanese marbling technique with ink on water)

The oldest and simplest form of marbling paper comes from Japan and is known as suminagashi, which means ʻink floatingʼ or ʻspilled ink.ʼ Process: A shallow tray is filled with wa- ter. Ink is carefully applied to the surface with a brush, a stick or an eyedropper. A drop of “negative” color made of plain water with the addition of a surfactant is used to drive the drop of color into a ring. The process is re- peated until the surface of the water is cov- ered with concentric rings. The floating colors are then carefully manipulated either by blowing on them directly or through a straw, fanning the colors, or carefully using a stick to stir the colors. Finally, a sheet of rice paper or washi paper is carefully laid onto the water surface to capture the floating design. The paper is carefully removed and laid on a smooth surface or paper towels to dry.

Some ideas for use: scrapbooking, greeting cards, ATCs, collage, journaling, stationary, decoupage, endpapers, bookmarks, paper- crafts, marbled mats, backgrounds for paint- ing, stamping, calligraphy or poetry — or just mat & frame as a painting.
