ADULT CLASSES
PORTRAIT WATERCOLOR

with Jay Bailey
Saturday, December 10, 3-6pm
This workshop will explore the use of watercolor and mixed media techniques to render and depict a human portrait. Watercolor has unique qualities which allow for flexible applications and dynamic paintings. We will discuss material considerations such as brushes, papers, surfaces, and paints. We will also cover concepts and methods which will open doors for any level of painter, such as a limited palette and the role of preliminary drawings.

LEATHERWORKING

with Scott Horn
Sunday, January 15, 2-5pm
Learn the basics of leatherworking. Sheridan-style decorative leatherwork is a distinctively American craft traditions, with deep roots in Texas. This class will teach the traditional techniques to turn a strip of raw hide into a finished piece of wearable art.

NEW!!! INTRO TO TEXTILES SERIES

with Sarita Westrup and Analise Minjarez
Thursdays, January 19-23, 7-9pm
In this 6 week Intro to Textiles course students will explore three 2D techniques and one 3D technique through explorations and samples. Shibori – A Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing, or capping. We will focus on exploring four stitching techniques on cloth and dye with indigo. Block Printing – Create graphic repeat patterns on cloth. Carve an image from a rubber block and practice your printing skills. Silk Painting – Use synthetic dyes to paint images on silk cloth. Prep the silk surface for painting and explore basic silk painting techniques and materials such as resist paste, salt, and alcohol. Basketry – Make a three dimensional form using the coiling technique with cotton cord. Make closed and open bottom baskets, and learn to finish the lip of a basket.

HAND EMBROIDERY

Sunday, January 22, 1-4pm
Learn the basics of hand embroidery. Beginning as a decorative art for items worn and around the home, embroidery has grown into being a leading technique of fibers art. This workshop will go through a reference guide of basic introductory stitches and a weave. After, students use these learned stitches to embroider on their given designs. During the designs, we will chat about transferring designs onto fabric, as well as what it is like to embroider different materials.
