“Jan Thompson’s workshops are what got me back into art after nearly 30 years.  After spending a couple of summers in Creede, Colorado I signed up for one of her pastel workshops not having any expectations of producing any great art but just to have fun doing art.  Never having done pastels I was surprised at how much I not only learned but how much fun I had doing it.  I was immediately drawn into the world of art again.  But the best thing I think is that she is passionate about her craft, if you want to learn about pastels this is the person to learn from. I actually have my own art studio now because of that first workshop I decided to take from Janet R. Thompson”.  Review by Jennifer Hammer, Texas

“Three delicious meals are enjoyed daily and end of the day sunsets are superb.  I learned and enjoyed the ranch experience.  Don’t miss it !!! ” Review by Jean Lewis, Oklahoma “This is more like a retreat; painting, fellowship, eating and having a great time with a wonderful artist.”  Review by Jackie Railsback, Texas.

At sixteen Jan discovered the pure soft pigment sticks called pastel and has spent the last fifty-five years creating artwork in her own vibrant, colorful style.

“404 Ranch”

The ranch house was just recently remodeled inside and out and a 30’x30′ attached studio added which is where the workshop will be conducted.

Landscapes: Transformed/Transfigured | Sean Caulfield

OPENS TO PUBLIC May 19, 2017

May 19, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM

July 29, 2017

Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm; Saturday noon-5pm

Through installation, sculpture and printmaking Sean Caulfield’s work considers the ways our envi- ronment is transformed by forces of urban and industrial growth. The visual images and environ- ments he creates blur boundaries between the biological and the technological, the organic and the mechanical; they challenge viewers to consider the implications of this merging.

“Central to my work is the role that society, community and the individual has in the moment of change. Focusing on broader themes of mutation, metamorphosis, and regeneration involving both the landscape and the individuals that inhabit it, I aim to raise challenging questions for viewers about the role they play. Ultimately, my work focuses on the idea that crisis and change – whether it be environmental, political, or personal – can be a significant and positive catalyst for rebirth, growth and courage.” Sean Caulfield

A Presentation by Documentary Video Producer and Writer Marla Fields entitled: “Frank Reaugh – Landscape and Cattle Painter”

You are invited to a presentation by Marla Fields at the Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) January monthly meeting on January 5th, 2017, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 East Hickory St, Denton.

Marla will present film highlights that feature artist and poet Frank Reaugh (1860-1945), a key figure in the region’s development of visual art and art education during the 19th Century.

Marla Fields has been a freelance video producer and writer since 1994. Ms. Fields is responsible for and assisted in the creative, preproduction, production, and post-production of various training, promotional, and educational projects, both local and nationwide.

With over 20 years of experience in overseeing numerous productions from script-to-screen in the corporate arena, “Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains” is her first full-length documentary.

She began her Reaugh journey in 2010 by establishing non-profit status for her production and raising funds though small grants and private donations. Since then, she has traveled the state thoroughly researching the artist and his students, recording key interviews, and capturing hundreds of images including the landscapes, landmarks and, of course, the longhorns that Mr. Reaugh sketched and treasured.

With the documentary complete, she is currently creating community events with organizations and institutions that share the common goal of bringing more awareness to this Texas treasure.

Marla is a native Texan, born in Lake Jackson, and resides in Frisco,Texas, just north of Dallas.

TVAA Downtown Gallery

A Day in June

June 1 – 30, 2016

“And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days”

Technically, a day in June is not that rare. They do account for about 1/12 of all the days we live. But the metaphorical day in June, that is rare. It’s that special day we hope to enjoy once in a great while. Our June show will celebrate these rare days, described so aptly in the poem by James Russell Lowell. We want images of blue skies, green fields, and rippling brooks, of course. But more than that, we’d like to have artwork inspired by everything that early summer brings: nesting birds, wild flowers, picnics, gardening, swimming, road trips.

Artists may submit up to three jpg images at 300 dpi and no longer than 1800 pixels on longest side. Prospectus is available on the TVAA website at www.tvaa.org  or from Shari.

Deadline for submission is May 20, 2016. Send entries to Curator Shari Hornish at: sharihornish@yahoo.com.
