6th Annual Juried International Exhibition of Islamic Contemporary Art

Presented by the Islamic Art Revival Series in partnership with Irving Arts Center, the 6th Annual Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Islamic Art is a program of the Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation.

This prestigious international exhibition of artwork is inspired by Islamic culture, art, literature and architecture and features works in a variety of styles and media from artists around the world.  Coming from diverse backgrounds, with varying faiths, ages and levels of expertise, the exhibition aims to present Islamic art as a universal language,  a translator and connector of generations and cultures.

Saturday, October 7

  • Opening Night Reception featuring Linda Komaroff (7 p.m.) Linda Komaroff has served as LACMA’s curator of Islamic art since 1995. Her exhibitions at LACMA include The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia, 1256-1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (2011).

Saturday, October 14

  • Guided Gallery Tour, 2 pm and 4 pm Marcie Inman, Director of Exhibitions & Educational Programs at Irving Arts Center leads guided tours of the exhibition.  

Saturday, October 21 – Sunday, October 22

Special Guest Speaker/Artist: Arash Shirinbab will deliver workshops and presentations for both youth and adults October 21-22. Arash Shirinbab is an award winning artist and calligrapher and has managed to be a successful blend of artist, Arabic-Persian calligrapher, and designer, as well as art administrator, art curator, and entrepreneur for the past ten years. His schedule will be as follows:

  • Saturday, October 21 @ 10 am – Noon: Calligraphy workshop for kids, ages 9+
  • Saturday, October 21 @ 4 pm. Talk/demonstration (Talk in Dupree Theater will be followed by a Calligraphy demonstration).
  • Sunday, October 22 @ 2 pm Calligraphy workshop for adults, ages 17 and above

Saturday, October 28

Artists’ Panel: Pakistani Artistic Tradition and Contemporary Expression Artists Anila Quayyum Agha, Ambreen Butt, Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz, and Murad Khan Mumtaz in a conversation moderated by Dallas Contemporary’s Senior Curator, Justine Ludwig will discuss the impact of Pakistani visual tradition on their artistic practice. The panel will explore how art history has helped shape each artist’s unique contemporary visual language, and will delve into the tensions between geo-specific artistic traditions and the globalized nature of contemporary art.

Two and three dimensional art works by artists of all ages are on view as part of the Art Connection visual arts membership program. All current Art Connection members who wish to participate are eligible.  Entry fee is $5 per work and artists may submit up to two pieces of work.  Prizes are presented in three categories: Youth, Non-Professional and Professional with an overall “Best of Show” prize also awarded.

Thematic Challenge: All You Need is Love & Art
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of “The Summer of Love” and Irving Arts Center’s “Summer of ’17,” participating artists are invited to create artwork which explores the theme of “All You Need is Love & Art.” Characterized by the spirit of revolution and social change, the 1960s were a turbulent and exciting time.  Through the works of those artists who choose to find inspiration in this theme, we hope to capture a bit of the culture, music and art of this most groovy decade.   Special prizes will be awarded to member artists who choose to compete in this category (note – this is completely optional).

Juror: IARS is pleased to announce Linda Komaroff as the esteemed juror for this year’s exhibition. Dr Komaroff is the Curator of Islamic Art at the Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA) in California. Linda Komaroff has served as LACMA’s curator of Islamic art since 1995. Her exhibitions at LACMA include The Legacy of Genghis Khan: Courtly Art and Culture in Western Asia, 1256-1353 (2003); A Tale of Two Persian Carpets (2009); and Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts (2011). The latter was the first major exhibition on Islamic art organized by an American institution to travel to the Middle East, to the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (2012), where Dr. Komaroff was the guest curator. Among her contemporary exhibitions are: Islamic Art Now: Contemporary Art of the Middle East, Part 1 (2015) and Part 2 (2016). Combining historirical and contemporary art, her next international loan exhibition for LACMA, In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art, is scheduled for 2018.

Eligibility: This juried art exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older from around the world. All art submitted should be based on or inspired by Islamic art and design, Islamic literature, Islamic architecture and Islamic cultures, current social issues and presented in a positive light. Only artwork produced within the last two years or since 2015 will be accepted. Artwork shown in the previous IARS juried exhibitions is not eligible to be entered.

Media: All 2D and 3D art, including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, art glass, fiber arts, hand pulled prints, photographs, small art installations, video art and original digital prints are welcome. Giclee prints which are not original will not be considered.

Introduction to Free Motion Machine Embroidery with Leisa Rich

Students in this introductory workshop will explore the exciting, creative technique of free motion machine embroidery on a medium weight cotton cloth. This workshop focuses on a myriad of ways easy-to-do machine embroidery can transition a flat surface to a dimensional, textural one, using thread only! Skills learned can be used to embellish quilts, clothing or home décor, or with practice, advance to “painting with thread” and make wall-hung art works. Discover your personal direction in a supportive learning environment through an emphasis on technical exploration that is fun! Even mistakes are opportunities. Take these great techniques home to inspire continuous exploration.

Registration is open to individuals 17 and older. Participants will need to bring their own sewing machine and supplies; for a complete list of supplies click here

About Leisa:

Leisa Rich is an experimental artist working with an array of new fibers, detritus and mixed media in 2D, sculptural, installation and 3D printing. Rich pulls from many art and fiber techniques but it is Free Motion stitching, sewing, hand embroidery and 3D printing that are employed most often in her works. She exhibits internationally and nationally, has been featured on the PBS artist special inCONTEXT, in several books: 3D Mixed Media Textile ArtTextile Art Around the World; Mastering the Art of Embroidery; The Best of America Sculpture; NoPlaceness: Art in A Post-Urban Landscape; Modern Sculpture; The Studio Quilt No. 6: State of the Art; Hand to Hand; Quilt National 2009; The Best of America Sculpture Artists and Artisans and in magazines, newspapers, blogs and televised interviews. She holds Master of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts & Bachelor of Education in Art degrees and teaches in colleges, arts centers, educational institutions, studio, and travels to teach. Winners of the 2017 Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition

The Reception & Awards Ceremony for the 32nd Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition was held on Sunday, April 30, 2016 at the Irving Arts Center. Best of Show was awarded to artist Linda Conley for her pastel “Days Finale”. The IAC Award of Excellence went to Linda Lucas Hardy for “It Don’t Make Sense But It’s So Much Fun”, a work in colored pencil. $9,300 in cash was awarded in five media categories to 22 artists. For a full list of awards see below.

For reception photos of awards, artists, celebrants, and Chocolate Rose floral arrangements see the IAA Photo Album (coming soon).

Be sure to see the amazing florals created as tributes to the paintings by the floral artists of the Chocolate Rose.  (left, Gail Delger’s Escape Route) They are only on view for a week.

The exhibit was juried by Michael Holter and represents works from regional artists residing in Texas and the four surrounding states. Cosponsored by Irving Art Association and the Irving Arts Center.

MEET THE JUROR:

Michael Holter NWS, OPS, SWS, SWA, TXN

Texas artist Michael Holter works in both watercolor and oil. Michael’s work has received numerous awards and recognition and can be found in private and corporate collections in the US and several foreign countries. His current work is in two categories: figurative watercolor and oil landscapes (both plein air and studio).
Michael is a signature member of The National Watercolor Society, Texas & Neighbors, the Southwestern Watercolor Society and The Society of Watercolor Artists. He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Transparent Watercolor Society, The Outdoor Painters Society, the Portrait Society of America, and the American Impressionist Society.
“I have been influenced by artists such as Charles Reid, Richard Schmid, Burt Silverman, Frank Webb, John Singer Sargent, Ted Nuttall and many others. Indian Folk Art Traveling Exhibition at the Irving Arts Center

The Indian Folk Art exhibition, a celebration of Indian culture and heritage, was on view at the Irving Art Association’s galleries at Jaycee Park Center for the Arts during February. It was such  a success that the exhibit was invited to move to the Irving Arts Center. Works from ten of the artists are traveling to be on exhibit March 4 – 26 in the Irving Art Center’s Focus Gallery.

The 2017 Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition is open to all artists 18 and older living in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. IAA 2016 4th Annual Animal Art Traveling Exhibit

Local artists with artwork displayed in Irving Art Association‘s annual National Animal Art Juried Competition were invited to participate after the end of the exhibit  in a “traveling” exhibit to another gallery in Irving.

This year the exhibit travels to the Irving Arts Center for the first time and is on display in the foyer and halls of the building. Address: 3333 N MacArthur Blvd., Irving TX 75062

2016 Art Connection’s Entries Due July 9 & 10

16th Annual Art Connection Members Exhibition July 16 – August 27, 2016

July 17 2 to 4 p.m., Opening reception and awards ceremony for Art Connection Members in the Main Gallery. Awards will be announced at3 p.m. Event is free and open to the public.

This annual, non-juried exhibition at the Irving Arts Center is open to all current members who wish to participate. The entry fee is $5 per work, and artists may submit up to two pieces. Members may join at time of entry. $1,800 in cash prizes will be awarded.

Eligible entries will be judged for cash awards in three categories: 1. Youth (17 years old and younger) 2. Non-Professional (18 years old and up) 3. Professional

NEW THIS YEAR! Thematic/design challenge! Participating members are invited to create artwork that explores the theme of “Heroes/Superheroes: Who Inspires You?” Special prizes will be awarded to members who choose to compete in this category.

All entries must be original works completed within the last two years. Entries that have been in any previous exhibition at the Irving Arts Center (IAC) are ineligible.

• Eligible media include: painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, printmaking (hand-pulled graphics), digital printmaking, photography, textiles, fiber, mixed media, and fine art crafts (no work from kits). Video will be accepted (submitted on a DVD with a continuous loop function); however, equipment availability for viewing/ displaying is limited.

Members may drop off their work on Saturday, July 9, noon–5 p.m. or Sunday, July 10, 1–5 p.m. at the Irving Arts Center. • Out of town members are welcomed to ship their artwork to arrive at the IAC by July 8.

This visual arts exhibition presented by the Irving Black Arts Council coincides with Black History Month and features various aspects of the artistic depiction of life, history and culture of and by African- American artists. From textile designs to street art inspired creations, the artwork is exciting! Artists slated to be featured are Johnathon Foster, Kirk Garnett, Shalana Mitchell, Kevin Owens and Christopher “C-Ray” Rayson.

The Irving Heritage Society will host a program at the Irving Arts Center on Wednesday, January 13, at 7pm, in the Arts Center room 200.

Todd Hawkins, Executive Director of the Irving Arts Center, will present a program on “Home Is Where The Art Is” immediately following a brief general meeting.   The Irving Arts Center is located at 3333 North MacArthur.  Parking is free and the entrance is the front door near the sculpture garden.  Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
