Exhibition Title: Patrick Turk: The Demiurge Exhibition Dates: June 17 – October 17, 2017 Opening Reception: Saturday, June 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Please join us in celebration of artist Patrick Turk’s new public art installation, The Demiurge, made possible by an Individual Artist Grant Award, funded by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. An opening reception will be held, Saturday, June 17th, from 6-9pm. The installation will be on view through Saturday, October 17th at Mystic Lyon in Houston, TX.

The Demiurge is the builder of the Universe and all things material. It is the force through which Everything is conceived and created. It is atomic and molecular. It is liquid, gas, and solid. It is bacteria, amoeba, and fungi. It is plants, animals and all of us.

Quasi-scientist and self-taught artist, Patrick Turk explores the mysteries of the universe in his highly detailed and imaginative hand-cut paper assemblages. Images taken from any number of resources including: science- fiction novels, encyclopedias, history and scientific diagrams, are cut and assembled in oftentimes multidimensional surfaces to create a curious and dark narrative. Says Turk, “The intense levels of detail become a microcosm, forming a reflection of the human relationship to the plasticity of time and space, and to the process of self-unfolding.”

Patrick Turk was born in Galveston, Texas and lives and works in Houston. His assemblages have been exhibited throughout Houston in galleries including Art Storm, Lawndale Art Center and Rudolph/Projects/Art Scan as well as galleries in Galveston, Texas and Los Angeles, California. In 2013, he was an Artist in Residence at the Lawndale Art Center. His works have been published several times in Mung Being Magazine and include high profile commissions for the 2009 Houston Art Car Parade Poster as well as the Philokalia album cover by Golden Cities. Patrick Turk is one of 60 artists included in the 2016 book, The Art of Found Objects: Interviews with Texas Artists (Texas A&M Press), authored Robert Craig Bunch.

“THE FLOWER SHOW @ Splendora Gardens”
(an open call, every artist gets in art show about Flowers)
located in the beautiful and historic studio of James Surls and Charmaine Locke:
26041 Midline Road, Cleveland, TX 77328
March 25th, 2017 – April 23rd, 2017
Through their quiet beauty and grave symbolism, flowers continually capture the imagination and inspire the passions of artists. Many delight in the delicacy of petals illuminated by a late spring sun, animated by a gentle wind. The complex play of light, color, value, and texture compel the brush and the pen, the lyric and the tone. Others render flowers and gardens, and the myriad elements that complete them, as metaphors for the most profound aspects of human existence. They emerge out of the verdant mire to denote rebirth, fertility, peace, prosperity, purity, and as Juan Ferret notes in “The Power of Flowers,” spiritual liberation from earthly impulses.
Flowers give voice to our feelings. They adorn our most sacred ceremonies and grace our bodies in life’s important moments. They serve as gifts to our closest loved ones and those we wish to draw closer, and memorials to those we will miss. They embellish the commonplace, bringing joy to families on city windowsills and in country planters. And while coloring our days with vibrant and subtle hues, flowers also nourish new life; the flower’s highest value lies in its interactions in the complex of nature. It is a node, a point of collection, of both beauty and purpose. The dynamic essence of an organism, the flower reaches towards the sun as a lofty realization of its inverse, the root. And as one instant within a larger environment, whether garden or wilderness, it provides sustenance to other organisms. The garden in turn provides sanctuary from the commotion of life. Restful meditation or deep contemplation await those willing to release themselves into the order and elation of the garden, however modest. Although an invention, a vibrant balance of science and aesthetics, the garden symbolizes paradise, creation, and the perfection of nature.
Splendora Gardens is pleased to invite artists of all kinds to submit works to be exhibited, presented, or performed at “The Flower Show.” Whichever discipline you work within, no matter your level of “achievement,” or age, we are calling for works that express your unique interpretation of the theme of “flowers” and/or “gardens.” There will be no juror; every piece submitted will be shown. You are welcome to send visual art, read original poetry or prose, perform a song, or anything else for that matter. You can exhibit or perform works you’ve already created or make something new.
Scheduled visual artists (so far): James Surls, Charmaine Locke, Daniel Johnston, The Wheeler Bro’s, Ruby Surls, Alton Dulaney, and you…

The Galvez Streetscape, New Orleans, LA

Budget: $15,000
Deadline: 11/4/16

The Arts Council New Orleans, through the City of New Orleans Percent for Art Program, seeks to integrate impactful art into the city’s public space by illuminating the culturally artistic traditions inherent to our community. We believe that public art, serving in the best interest of public good, can be profoundly uplifting, help to build an appreciation for public space, and strengthen the creative, political, intellectual, and cultural tendencies that define New Orleans communities.

New Orleans Fire Department Murals, LA

Budget: $15,000
Deadline: 11/4/16

The Arts Council New Orleans’ Place + Civic Design Department is requesting mural proposals to replace public art installations at two New Orleans Fire Department locations. The department, through the City of New Orleans’ Percent for Art Program, and in partnership with the New Orleans Fire Department, will decommission existing public art banner installations and replace them with contemporary murals at the 801 Girod Street Flying Squad and Basin Street stations. The call is open to experienced artists, artist teams, or community groups working with muralists. Proposals may be submitted for both sites; however, only one artist or artist group will be selected for each site. While the installation should connect the fire department to the larger New Orleans community, themes should reflect broader sentiments that transcend specific references to fire, safety, and the departments’ history. Example sentiments include, but are not limited to: • A deep connection to, and congruence with, the surrounding neighborhood; • Specific historical references from the surrounding community; • Celebration of contemporary art’s transformative energy; • Collective empowerment and representation through creative expression in urban spaces; • Excitement and interest for the community’s current growth and energy; • Celebration of the neighborhood’s identity, and rich heritage.
