Yun Jung “YunI” Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea she came to America with high passion, and an eagerness to further her artistic expression. She has a diverse art-making practice, but she is committed to making art about color, shape, and pattern. She studies color and pattern to learn about different cultures and nature. She received a BA in Art and Performance from to the University of Texas at Dallas and MFA in Painting and Drawing at the University of North Texas in May 2016. She has participated in group and collaborative exhibitions in Texas and is currently teaching foundation courses at the University of North Texas. She lives and works in Denton, Texas. Do you remember those incredible dioramas and puppets that graced the Greater Denton Arts Council during Arts All Night? Friday, October 28th you are invited to spend the evening learning how to make a puppet in a similar fashion. The amazing artists Melanie Little Gomez Smith and Des Smith of ARTLAB 3000 will be leading participants into their realm. Participants will assemble and customize their very own puppets.

Day of the Dead Parade Puppet Workshop

Create your own Day of the Dead Sugar Skull parade puppet then join in the fun of the Day of the Dead twilight parade later that evening! The Denton Independent Motorcycle show is part festival, part pop-up art show, and entirely free and open to the public. The heart of the event will showcase motorcycles that have been transformed from mass market vehicles or discarded wrecks into unique expressions of the individual builder. Highlighting the energy, excitement, and dedication that goes into customizing these two-wheeled works of art, the show will be a reflection of the vivacity so prominent throughout the Denton community. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to support the Greater Denton Arts Council.

In partnership with Denton’s Day of the Dead Festival, the Greater Denton Arts Council presents an exhibition of traditional and contemporary ofrendas honoring departed loved ones and ancestors. Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of family members and loved ones who have passed. Altars are built at the home of the families of the deceased, presenting offerings such as food, drink, flowers, incense and personal items to welcome the spirits of loved ones. Throughout the exhibition, visitors are encouraged to bring a personal item of remembrance to add to our community altar. http://dentonarts.com

Heroes in the Making: The Art of Comic Production

From classic D.C. and Marvel heroes to independent artists and graphic novelists, today comic art surrounds us in print, toys, films, and online. But how do such artists create the heroes of tomorrow? This interactive exhibition brings together original illustrations, published works, scripts and sketches to explore the history and future of comic production. Enjoy a selection of works from comic masters Jack Kirby, Curt Swan, Keith Giffen, Stan Lee, and Richard Sala, including such beloved characters as Superman and Silver Surfer. With a “behind-the scenes” focus on how comics are made, visitors of all ages can create their own comics in hands-on maker stations or enjoy their favorite comics in our reading lounge.

VAST Merging Visions opens April 15 in Denton

The Visual Arts Society of Texas collaborates with the Denton Poets’ Assembly, the Greater Denton Arts Council, and the Denton Public Library to create an annual exhibit of paired original art work and poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month. This exhibition is held at Patterson-Appleton Arts Center with part of the exhibit traveling to various library locations.

The opening reception — also free and open to the public — will be held on April 15th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Arts Open Call presented in partnership with 35 Denton

Arts Open Call welcomes hundreds of artists from across North Texas for an interactive installation at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center in historic downtown Denton. Displayed floor to ceiling in the grand hall of the city’s former power plant, approximately 200 artworks will be selected for exhibition and sale. Selected works will also become part of our online marketplace. 50% of the sale of artworks will benefit the exhibition’s artists while remaining funds will support the education programs of the Greater Denton Arts Council. The opening reception on Friday, March 4, will feature performers from 35 Denton music festival and is open to all participating artists, their guests, and the public.

Thin Line Fest Photography Festival Feb. 17 – 22 in Denton

The 2016 Thin Line Photography Exhibit is a competitive and curated festival, which will showcase the best and most promising talent in Texas and beyond. Selected artists will have their work displayed in print and digital galleries featuring works in the 2016 categories of Natural Beauty, It’s About People, What Moves Us, There’s a Thin Line, and Zef. Additionally, the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center will also host Thin Line educational workshops and local film screenings including a visual history of Denton, Texas 2015 called “Our Town: Denton.”

The 9th Annual Thin Line documentary Film Fest will take place at Campus Theater February 17-22, 2016. Thin Line will show one-of-a-kind documentaries from around the world at affordable prices. The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 29th annual Materials: Hard + Soft National Contemporary Craft Competition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, this year’s call for submissions drew over 800 entries by artists from over 40 states. Juror Elizabeth Kozlowski, former curator of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, has selected over 60 works for this year’s exhibition. Tickets for special exhibitions are available for purchase at the Welcome Desk at the Arts Center.
