Zhulong Gallery Presents my shoes, my stove, my life, a Solo Exhibition by Luke Dowd

Zhulong Gallery Presents my shoes, my stove, my life, a Solo Exhibition by Luke Dowd, to Open with Artist Reception, Friday, May 15 6-9P
Luke Dowd, shoes, 2015
Digital print on canvas, 28″ x 31″
my Dowd_shoes
my shoes, my stove, my life will open on Friday, May 15, 2015 with an artist reception from 6-9P and run until June 20, 2015.

Zhulong Gallery is pleased to present my shoes, my stove, my life, a solo exhibition of recent digital works on canvas by London-based artist Luke Dowd. Earnest photographs of the artist’s stovetop serve as studies on both life and the formal and physical elements of image making.  Evoking reflected light, the most subtle additions of color emphasize the act of technologic image-capture, be it through a scan of an already image, or the flash of a camera. Balanced arrangements and re-arrangements of a pair of the artist’s favorite shoes, a wine glass, various fruits shown from above, mirror the subdued aesthetic.

Picturing and listing some of the major necessities of a well-outfitted life, my shoes, my stove, my life reminds us of  ‘dwelling,’ as proposed by philosopher, Martin Heidegger.  Dowd’s tech-inspired canvases draw together the space for making, working, and living—potentially proposing that the artists’ eye is always open; and the title, with its poetic structure and metaphoric value lines up with Heidegger’s “Building, Dwelling, Thinking” as the short piece also delves into the etymology of the word dwell. Overlap between everyday life and work also sheds light on our contemporary situation where technology keeps us bound to work, even while occupying spaces once distinct from the space of dwelling.  Akin to Magritte’s windows, Dowd’s canvases transform the everyday into a rubric for seeing and picturing our domestic environments.

Pop art, Constructivism, and various other art historical waves play out in these halftone studies. Stripping away the slick hyper-produced imagery of the ad, Dowd remits a simplified composition embellished only with the simplest of digital flourishes. Intentionally naïve, Dowd uses only the most basic tools in Photoshop distinguishing that his practice merely incorporates technology, but is not overcome by it.

About Luke Dowd

Luke Dowd (b. New York, NY, based in London) earned his MFA at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2002. He has exhibited internationally with solo shows in Paris, London, Cologne, Athens and Frankfurt and here in the states in New York and Chicago.. His works have also been included in a number of group exhibitions held at various institutions internationally. Dowd has also garnered attention from writers and critics at Artforum, Frieze, TimeOut London, Art Monthly, and the New York Times.

Upstairs Gallery Spring Gallery Night – March 28

People & Places: Beatriz Welch & Judy Gelfert

            March 28-May 2, 2015

Opening Reception on Spring Gallery Night

March 28, 12pm till 9pm

The Gallery is proud to show the works of these two expressive painters who represent two ways of looking at the landscape of the natural world and the people who inhabit it.

Judy Gelfert‘s work soars, not unlike her past days as a flight attendant – traveling often to study the great masters in museums, worldwide.

Beatriz Welch, a long-time gallery favorite, delights with her warm color palette and energetic brushwork, informed by experiences in Latin America, Ireland, New Mexico, Spain and the Texas Hill Country.

Imágenes y Memorias by Juanita Olano at Galería de la Rosa

Come visit the Galería de la Rosa, this Saturday, September 6th, to celebrate the Fall Gallery Night reception for Imágenes y Memorias by Juanita Olano.

Born in Colombia, South America, Juanita Olano has been a dancer, teacher and choreographer since the 1960’s. Moving to Fort Worth 8 years ago, she began to channel her creative output into painting, and has studied with local painters. She has been represented by Circle Theater Gallery in Fort Worth in a one woman show, and Square Moon Gallery in Ruidoso, NM. Her work has been collected by patrons in California, Texas, and New Mexico.
Ms. Olano carries into her painting all the knowledge gained from many years of experience in the dance, choreography, and theatre production, such as composition, developing a motif, flow and repetition of line, negative space, and harmony from working with music and lighting on stage. Her paintings are full of moving energy and she prefers to create landscapes that set an intensely dramatic and theatrical mood.
Join us on Saturday to celebrate with complimentary food and beverage!

FWADA is a unique arts organization in a unique American place. Few cities of Fort Worth’s size are privileged to command such a wealth of major art museums, and fewer still have such a vital community spirit. What truly sets Fort Worth apart, however, is the vigorous, longstanding, clearly defined cooperation between the museums, the university art galleries, the non-profit exhibition spaces, and the art dealers, all of which are full working members of FWADA. The Galleries of Granbury is a community organization made up of local art galleries and artists to share our love of art. Our main event is the monthly Last Saturday Gallery Night which features artists and musicians around our downtown square. This month’s Gallery Night is April 26th. The Galleries of Granbury are included in the Wine Walk events again this year!  Visit www.granburywinewalk.com for info about the Wine Walk happening April 25-26.   https://www.facebook.com/galleriesofgranbury

The fifth annual Granbury Wine Walk will kick off April 24th-26th on the Historic Square in downtown Granbury. Winery and vendor booths will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, inviting participants to experience the vast selections of true Texas amenities: authentic wine, food, music and art. http://granburywinewalk.com/

The swirling and sipping will commence again on Friday, April 25th with at least 18 Texas wineries taking part. The Granbury Wine Walk Booth is located at the Plaza on the Square. The Plaza is positioned on the southeast edge of the square and opens at 11:00 a.m. on Friday for both ticket reservation pick-up and ticket sales.
