Leonardo da Vinci, a new biography by Walter Isaacson

Walter Isaacson, famed author and biographer, returns to North Texas!

He’s written books about Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, Steve Jobs, Ben Franklin and others.
And now, the veteran Council guest speaker has turned his attention to a genius among geniuses, Leonard Da Vinci (1452-1519), the artist, sculptor, inventor, scientist, architect, etc.

Though he was a complicated polymath, the book is simply titled Leonardo Da Vinci. The eye-catching promotional line reads, “He was history’s most creative genius. What secrets can he teach us?”

Isaacson’s book explores the man who “produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology.” Da Vinci also studied everything from botany and biology to flying machines and optics. More than all that, too.
In the hands of skilled biographer Isaacson, Da Vinci’s life becomes, indeed, “an open book.”

This event will be held at the Fort Worth Club on November 28, 2017 at 11:30 am. For more information,  visit http://dfwworld.org/Walter-Isaacson

Artluck Sessions: Figure Drawing by Alexa Alarcon de Wierenga

artluck photo

This is a figure drawing class led by local Fort Worth artist, Alexa Alarcon de Wierenga. Alexa began creating art at a very young age. At five she was in a stain glass window class with Mary Lynn Bowman, at 14 went to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and later obtained a BFA in painting at UT Arlington. At Booker T. WHSPVA, she was the first freshman to be allowed to participate in an extracurricular, nude, figure drawing class guided by Nancy Miller. Alexa’s artwork is heavily influenced by the 4 years of figure drawing classes, her concepts sweep within psychological states of mind, environmental and social politics. She currently works at Dow Art Galleries, LLC as an Art Restorer, while continuing to work as an artist in the evenings.

The subject of the class will be a live nude model and the sessions will be split into two 45min sessions with a 15min break in-between.The first session begins at 6:30 p.m. and consists of several poses timed at different increments to serve as a warm-up. The second session is a single 45 min. pose that begins at 7:30 p.m.

Photography Exhibit: And They Say Of Her Woman| Angelika Ejtel

Angelika_Ejtel_On The Edge of Passing_PROM_pic 5

The Fort Worth Community Arts Center is pleased to announce the opening reception for self-portrait photographer Angelika Ejtel’s exhibition “And They Say Of Her Woman”.

Inspired by the poetry of a famous Polish poet H.  Poswiatowska, in this exhibition of self-portraits, Angelika Ejtel integrates the images that belong to her most feminine works. They encompass the motifs of dark love, never-ending longing and hidden desires. Woman and her intimate world(s) portrayed in the poems of Poswiatowska, takes the face and body of the artist in her photographs. This is just a tiny study of what womanhood is in its broad spectrum of meanings.

Angelika uses herself as a subject for her images. She considers her photographic creation as a poetic experience in which she drowns and infuses herself and, as a result, it gives her the feeling that she is reborn with each portrait into a new being. Although, all of her photographs are self-portraits, they shouldn’t be necessarily read as self-presentations, rather they should be revealed as the multiplicity of “selves” available to one individual. To put it succinctly, her attitude towards the self is more of an exploratory journey between an awareness of self and an unawareness of some aspects of oneself.

The exhibition will be on view from March 4th through March 22nd, 2017.

Please, join us at ART 7 Gallery in Fort Worth, TX for a complementary reception, and meet the artist on Thursday, March 9th from 6 to 8 PM.

Trademark Property’s Fort Worth Public Art at Waterside and WestBend

Art programs at Waterside and WestBend underscore Fort Worth-based developer’s commitment to local talent

FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 7, 2015) – Trademark Property Co. today announced new public art programs underway at the developer’s two Fort Worth properties, Waterside and WestBend. The art programs are intended to support Fort Worth culture and arts through historical tributes and commissions by local artists. They are a part of Trademark’s Conscious Place initiative; a stakeholder driven development model that aims to ensure that its properties are more than just places of commerce, but also places of community and meaning.

“At Trademark, we truly believe that in order to fulfill our Conscious Place vision, we must make sure that each project is a reflection of the community in which it exists,” said Terry Montesi, CEO, Trademark Property Co. “One of the ways we accomplish this is through a commitment to the local and artisan. We have spent months working with artists to ensure that these public art programs add soul and character to each property, and we hope that the art inspires and engages visitors for years to come.”

Trademark has commissioned Texas artist Bob Wade to lead the public art program at Waterside, the company’s first ground up Conscious Place mixed-use development. Currently under construction at Bryant Irvin Road and Arborlawn Drive, the 63-acre site previously served as the Lockheed Martin Recreation Association (LMRA). As part of the program, which will be a combination of sculpture and murals, Wade will repurpose amusement rides and play equipment located on the original site into public art that will be located around Waterside. In addition, Wade is giving new life to vintage black and white photographs that tell the history of the property over the past 75 years by hand tinting the images and transforming them into on site murals. The art is slated for installation in spring/summer 2016.

At WestBend, located in Fort Worth’s University District, two local artists with ties to neighboring Texas Christian University (TCU), Devon Nowlin and Cam Schoepp, have been selected for public art commissions at the property.

Fort Worth native Nowlin created five photographic murals that capture the shopping and dining experience, health and fitness, and the natural surroundings of the WestBend property. Installed in early December, Nowlin’s murals are displayed throughout the property, focusing on the areas facing the scenic Trinity River and Trinity River Trails. Schoepp, an associate professor of art at TCU, will install a ten-foot tall sculpture in spring 2016 which will incorporate a water feature into the welcoming green space near the valet area.

About Waterside

Waterside is a 63-acre mixed-use development currently under construction at Bryant Irvin Road and Arborlawn Drive in Fort Worth, Texas. Phase I, which is slated for completion in 2016, includes retail and restaurants, signature public space, The Grove, 383 multi-family units and a number of Conscious Place amenities. Tenants will include Whole Foods Market, REI, Taco Diner, Zoes Kitchen, Blaze Pizza, Sleep Train, Massage Heights, Envy Nails, Amazing Lash Studio plus many additional retail and restaurants. At full build out, Waterside will be a walkable, dynamic district including 200,000 square feet of retail space and riverside restaurants, 800 multifamily residential units, two to three hotels, office buildings, and potential for additional high density single family housing, much of which will be situated along the Trinity River. For more information, visit watersidefw.com or follow Waterside on Facebook and Twitter.

About WestBend

WestBend is located on the Trinity River in Fort Worth’s University District, one of Dallas-Fort Worth’s strongest infill retail corridors. WestBend is undergoing a major redevelopment adding new retail, restaurants and WestBend 2, a new 81,150-square-foot building that includes The Fresh Market on the ground floor and 57,000 square feet of new Class A office space directly above. Current tenants include The Fresh Market, Zoes Kitchen, East Hampton Sandwich Co., Silver Fox and the River Plaza office tenants. Upon completion in spring 2016, WestBend will include 278,000 square feet of retail, dining and office space. For more information, visit westbendfw.com or follow WestBend on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Becoming Mother” Photographs by Danielle René Khoury at Gallery 76102

Please join us at Gallery 76102 for our final show of the year by Danielle Khoury, winner of our 897 Square Competition.

Curated by Lauren Cross, this show allows the audience a view into the life of Khoury and her experiences as a mother, creating glimpses of what is normally considered mundane aspects of motherhood, and transforming them into interesting and whimsical subjects.

“Becoming Mother is a record of my daily life and transition into motherhood using visual language. Mundane moments are captured between my children, our surroundings, and me. Becoming a mother limited my time to create art; in order to create work I decided to turn the camera on my real life. Details that one might disregard are put into focus and chaotic times are made still by the click of my shutter. These images are my life. Becoming Mother began in 2013 and is an ongoing series that will continue to shape and take form as my life continues.”

Light refreshments will be served.

Exhibition Dates: October 8 – November 30

Reception Date/Time: October 8th, 6-8pm

Oscuro Myths and Monsters of Latino América – May 8 in Ft Worth

Myths and Monsters of Latino América.

A Galería de la Rosa Exhibit

by Eric Villarreal

The public is invited to an opening reception for the artist on Friday May 8th from 6 to 9 pm. At 7:00 pm, a special Sneak Peek Performance of Artes de la Rosa’s forthcoming Man of La Mancha will be followed by a brief artist’s presentation by Eric Villarreal followed by a special Q&A period.Artes de la Rosa’s Gallery (Galería de la Rosa) is pleased to present Oscuro: Myths and Monsters of Latino América. After 2012’s exciting and gorgeous exhibit, Cuentos de la Ciudad, Eric Villarreal has returned to the Artes de la Rosa Gallery for a new exhibit titled Oscuro: Myths and Monsters of Latino América.

“In my current exhibit I am focusing on the myths and monsters of Latino américa. Latino parents have used these monsters as warnings to their children to stay in bed at night or to encourage good behavior. They range from local legends such as “La Lechuza” and “La Llorona” to distant South American monsters like “El Codejo”. Through my artistic interpretations, I hope to evoke old thoughts and feelings of things that go bump in the night and to continue the oral traditions that have been passed down generation after generation.” – Eric Villarreal

The public is invited to an opening reception for the artist on Friday May 8th from 6 to 9 pm. At 7:00 pm, a special Sneak Peek Performance of Artes de la Rosa’s forthcoming Man of La Mancha will be followed by a brief artist’s presentation by Eric Villarreal followed by a special Q&A period. Find out more about this free event by calling the Rose Marine Theater at 817-624-8333. Artes de la Rosa’s Art Gallery is located at 1442 North Main Street, Fort Worth Texas 76164.

Eric Villarreal was born in 1975, in Roswell, NM. He recalls that he has always had an interest in art: “I can remember sitting at the kitchen counter drawing and tracing images from children’s books with my older brother, while our mom would fix us dinner.” When Eric was five years old, his family moved to Abilene, Texas where he attended grammar school and college. He credits his high school teacher with directing him into pursuing art as a career: “I had no idea what I wanted to do after high school. Mrs. Presswood helped me to organize my portfolio and I received some scholarships to attend McMurry University.” At McMurry, Eric received classical training in drawing and painting. While there, he also won numerous awards and recognition as an artist. He says that the late J. Robert Miller and Kathie Walker-Millar both influenced the way he approaches the canvas: “The creative and technical instruction I received now helps me to express more clearly what I want to communicate.” In 2001, Eric underwent surgery to remove a rare type of cancer. He says that this ordeal has shaped his overall outlook on life and his art. Eric says that he feels a certain urgency, not only for his art, but to live life to the fullest. Eric recognizes that his faith in God and family support has brought him through this trial in his life. Mr. Villarreal currently works out of his studio in Abilene with plans to move to DFW, Texas. He lives with his wife of nine years, Keilah, and their three children: Judah, Belen, and Diego. Eric has entered numerous shows and exhibitions and is currently pursuing art as a full-time career.

Since 2005, Galería de la Rosa has presented new works by established and emerging artists. It has earned a reputation as an important venue for contemporary art, with a particular focus on Latino artists.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 12 am to 6 pm. Weekend hours vary so please call. Galería de la Rosa is located at 1442 N. Main St. in Fort Worth, TX. Additional Images are available upon request. Press Contact: Adam Adolfo, Artistic Director atAdam.Adolfo@ArtesDeLaRosa.org.

Artes de la Rosa is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and interpreting the art, lives, and history of Latin culture for all. Located in the historic Rose Marine Theatre, 1440 North Main Street, Fort Worth Texas 76164
