Kelli Vance – ‘Sappers and Miners’ opens Saturday 5/13 at CWFA!

Sappers and Miners

Kelli Vance, Sappers and Miners, 2017, oil on canvas, 78 x 90 inches

May 13th – June 17th

Saturday, May 13th

from 5 – 8pm

Kelli Vance
We Provide Our Best Offering to the Universe
2017, oil on canvas, 60 x 36 inches

Cris Worley Fine Arts is proud to present Sappers and Miners, our second solo exhibition with Kelli Vance, opening with an artist’s reception on Saturday, May 13th from 5 – 8 pm.
Sappers and Miners will include a series of large-scale paintings produced in oil on canvas. The exhibition will be on view through June 17, 2017.
Kelli Vance is known for her photorealistic paintings, which explore psychologically thrilling themes from voyeurism to assumed identity. Her work is primarily driven by complex narratives surrounding socially constructed notions of femininity that romanticize alternative forms of beauty.
Working from staged photographs, Vance enhances tension in the subjects of her chosen models through her painterly play with light and textures including hair, rope, cake icing, and wet skin. She muffles provocative shouts existing within her compositions by depicting only portions of their narratives, keeping actions hinted by the titles relegated outside the frame.
In the recent work of Sappers and Miners, Vance suspends her depictions of female figures in tantalizing situations, in favor of subdued rituals. An arsenal of occult magic follows her figures in We Provide Our Best Offering to the Universe (2016) and Sun Eaters (2016) as they attempt to locate their locus of control in preparation for psychological battle. This sublime search for power is echoed by a palette of black and white, erasing any evidence of opulence from Vance’s earlier cinematic scenes. These new works summon viewers to seek serenity when reality becomes chaotic.
Kelli Vance was born in Garland, Texas receiving her BFA from the University of North Texas in 2005 and her MFA from the University of Houston in 2008. She was included in the 2009 Texas Biennale, in 2014 she was a finalist for the Hunting Art Prize, and in 2017 she received a Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant. Vance’s work has been shown widely across Texas as well as in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Mexico.

Cris Worley Fine Arts is located at: 1845 Levee Street # 110, Dallas, TX 75207
Gallery Hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 11am – 5pm and by appointment.

Artluck Sessions: Figure Drawing by Alexa Alarcon de Wierenga

artluck photo

This is a figure drawing class led by local Fort Worth artist, Alexa Alarcon de Wierenga. Alexa began creating art at a very young age. At five she was in a stain glass window class with Mary Lynn Bowman, at 14 went to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and later obtained a BFA in painting at UT Arlington. At Booker T. WHSPVA, she was the first freshman to be allowed to participate in an extracurricular, nude, figure drawing class guided by Nancy Miller. Alexa’s artwork is heavily influenced by the 4 years of figure drawing classes, her concepts sweep within psychological states of mind, environmental and social politics. She currently works at Dow Art Galleries, LLC as an Art Restorer, while continuing to work as an artist in the evenings.

The subject of the class will be a live nude model and the sessions will be split into two 45min sessions with a 15min break in-between.The first session begins at 6:30 p.m. and consists of several poses timed at different increments to serve as a warm-up. The second session is a single 45 min. pose that begins at 7:30 p.m.

Cindy J. Holmes: THUS SPAKE DERRIDA reception March 11 at Haley-Henman

Image: Cindy J. Holmes Walking Man Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36 inches

March 9 – April 1, 2017
Opening reception:  Saturday, March 11, 5-8 pm
Haley-Henman Gallery at Gallery 422
422 Singleton Boulevard
Dallas, Texas 75212

a solo exhibition of new paintings

DALLAS, Texas (February 4, 2017)– Haley-Henman proudly presents Cindy J. Holmes’ solo exhibition of new paintings titled Thus Spake Derrida.  This is her third solo exhibition at Haley-Henman, which focuses on the human figure. The opening reception on Saturday, March 11 from 5-8 pm is free and open to the public.  The exhibition is from March 9 through April 1, 2017.

For this exhibition, Holmes has pushed the boundaries toward abstraction. Indeed, these paintings reference the Bay Area Figurative Movement that has generated itself as a distinct style since the 1950s, and which continues today in Holmes’s work.  But her existential position is different.  Instead of reintegrating elements of realism into painting, such as what the Bay Area artist did when they went beyond Abstract Expressionism, Holmes starts with realism and then takes it apart.

For Holmes, the figure is not stepping into an abstraction.  Her process breaks the rules of figurative artwork, and in this deconstructed way, removes the binary oppositions of beauty/ugly, whole/parts, man/woman.
Holmes allusion to Nietzsche in the title of her exhibition resonates with her paintings as “…authentic art, which allows freedom above things.  We need all exuberant, floating, dancing, mocking, childish, and blissful art lest we loose our freedom above things our ideal demands of us…” (Nietzsche 1882, The Gay Science: With a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs (1974), translated with a commentary, Walter Kaufman, N.Y., Vintage Books, p. 164).

Artist Talk with Jay Bailey Dec. 10 at JM Gallery

Join JM Gallery Saturday, December 10 at 12 for an artist talk featuring Jay Bailey where he will discuss his body of work currently on display.

Jay Bailey’s paintings and drawings are full of life. Fluid contour lines layered with puddles and washes of color appear, on one level, just as the materials they are—charcoal and paint on a white ground. But at the same, the lines, colors, and paper actively coalesce into human figures, as if in real time, creating a dynamic interplay between the materials and the forms they represent. The materials and the figures are each engaging on their own terms. The loose, gestural quality of seemingly uncoordinated stains and lines creates a sense of spontaneity and immediacy. And the emergent figures are all too human; as Jay describes them, they are deconstructed souls with scars, imperfections, tattoos, and memories.

Jay has a BA in Fine Art from the University of Nevada in Reno, he undertook post-baccalaureate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, and he has an MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

ABOUT JM GALLERY // JM Gallery offers works of art on paper and sculptural forms that engage both the eye and the mind. I Am, You Are reception May 16 at ART7

Please join ART7 Gallery
for the
Opening Reception
Am, You Are
Saturday, May 16, 2015  6-9pm
at ART7 Crockett Community Gallery

“Bailey Quinn” by Riley Holloway

ART7 invites the public to an exhibition titled I Am, You Are, showcasing juried works by artists in the 5-state region including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. I Am, You Are is the third of five themed exhibitions curated from a pool of artists who were accepted after applying to the ART7’s Regional Juried Call for Artists.

I Am, You Are presents an exciting look at contemporary portraits and figurative work. I Am, You Are is an exploration of what it means to be human, and celebrates the diversity of humanity. At a time when identity is in the forefront of national discussion, this exhibition offers a reflective look from many perspectives of cultures within the region, and in some instances the world. Works in the exhibition tackle culture clashes, women’s issues, childhood, community, love and storytelling.
