CALL FOR ENTRIES | Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition & Exhibition

The Greater Denton Arts Council announces the opening of its 2017 Call for Entries for the 30th Annual Materials: Hard + Soft Contemporary Craft Exhibition. This exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the United States, this year we are thrilled to be partnering with the National Endowment for the Arts to expand this national exhibition to now include international artists. Approximately 70 works will be selected for exhibition by juror JoAnn Edwards, Executive Director of the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, California. Of the works selected, Juror Awards in amounts of $1000, $750, $500, and $250 will be awarded.

The Greater Denton Arts Council announces the opening of its 2016 Call for Entries for the 29th annual Materials: Hard & Soft National Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard & Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough.

The exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Drawing hundreds of applications from across the United States each year, approximately 70 works will be selected for exhibition by our 2016 Juror, Elizabeth Kozlowski.

As the curator of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Kozlowski has over 12 years of curatorial and gallery experience with a specialty in contemporary ceramics. Of the works selected, Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250 will be presented.

It’s In The Bag! Event

Whether it’s funky, practical or abstract – we love them all! The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the 7th annual ‘It’s In The Bag!’ event. Join us for our one-of-a-kind silent handbag auction featuring exclusively designed bags by local artists, businesses, and art supporters of all shapes and sizes that will be up for bidding on May 8, 2014 – so come for the bags but stay for this year’s own champagne bar! Proceeds from the event fund numerous programs such as children’s art enrichment activities, local art organizations, exhibits, and performances throughout the year for North Texans. If you are interested in creating a bag, submit your entry form by March 21st!

The Greater Denton Arts Council presents Dance With Life – Works In Fiber by Brenda

J. Bunten‐Schloesser, opening in the Gough Gallery on November 17, 2013.

Bunten‐Schloesser’s work is a representation of the dance with life and the world that surrounds us. She invites the viewer to observe the delicate dance between humans and our surroundings, connected by every single thing.

Dance With Life is a body of work comprised of unique collages made from painted cotton using fiber‐reactive dye, then pieced together into organic shapes and images.

She states that fiber is her preferred medium because of its unique properties and ability to convey her story. “Fiber has a life of its own. As in life, working in fiber

Greater Denton Arts Council 400 E. Hickory Denton, TX 76201presents the element of surprise and often times results in a change of course. Each finished piece has a presence to it, a weight, and a natural feeling of being. “

The exhibition will open with a reception on Sunday, November 17, 2013, 2:00 – 4:00 pm. The artist will be in attendance.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

This annual competition and exhibition of contemporary crafts was started in 1987 and is now in it’s 27th year. Recognized nationally,Materials: Hard & Soft attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. Juror Judy Gordon is an arts advocate and collector in Austin, Texas.

Mixed Media Mania Begins at 6 p.m. on Monday

DAFA’s January 28th meeting features four members leading us in a rollicking round robin of arts techniques. This popular hands-on meeting involves spending 20-25 minutes at each teacher’s table, making the project that she has prepared. Olga Brock will teach us Embossed Soda Can Flowers; Angie Vangalis will lead us in drawing Zentangles on Fabric; Alisa Banks will help us make a Fabric Transfer Sampler; and Sherrie Tootle will show us a Folded Paper File Holder. Join us for all of the program or a couple of the sessions. Here are the details.

Entries Are Due February 8 for Annual Member’s Show

lindathiemann DAFA members can participate three ways in the Annual Member’s Show at C.C. Young from March 30 to April 22, 2013. “High Fiber Diet,” will be the juried show judged by Cynthia Padilla, a talented local fiber artist and instructor whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. “Recycled Runway Highlights,” will display items entered from the September program. “Connections” will feature the art quilts donated by members to DAFA’s Community Service project supporting the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.

Entries are due February 8, 2013 for all members in good standing (i.e., membership paid before January 8, 2013) who submit original fiber art that was not started in a class or workshop. The entry form, additional information and a PayPay link are posted on DAFA’s website. Contact DAFA Show Chair Lu Peters at show@dallasfiberartists.org for more information.

April 22, 2013 Closing Reception 6pm to 9pm. Awards will be presented and at the end of the program, you will be able to take your artwork home.
