FBCAA Meeting/Demonstration with Lap Ngo April 21

New Logo

FBCAA Meeting/Workshop

The Farmer’s Branch Carrollton Art Association will be having their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 21, at the Farmer’s Branch Senior Center, 14055 Dennis Lane, near Valwood.  The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes around noon.  Guests and potential new members are welcome.  Membership is $30 per year and associate membership is $40 per year.

There will be a demo around 10:30 AM with Lap Ngo.  Mr. Ngo was born in Ha-Long Bay, Vietnam and his love for art began at an early age. At the height of the Vietnam War he saved enough money from several art exhibits to purchase a one-way ticket to Paris, France. He was accepted to the world-renowned École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris where Monet, Renoir and Degas had been students. Lap studied painting, etching and engraving, and later obtained a Masters Degree in Fine Arts. He spent the next 24 years living in North and West Africa where he taught private art lessons and held yearly art exhibits sponsored by international institutions.

Lap Ngo’s paintings have often been described as “versatile yet peaceful and luminescent.” Working with various mediums, his painting subjects range from portraits of nomads to luminous landscapes he encountered in his African travels to very surrealistic compositions.

Out of Africa since 1996, he now divides his time between the U.S. and the South of France (Provence) where he continues to paint, write, teach, conduct workshops, and give lectures and demonstrations.

To learn more about Lap Ngo and his art, one can watch the video created by Allen City TV. In 2013, the documentary received the NATOA First and Second Prize Awards in different categories which were held in Orlando, Fl. This video is nominated for the Lone Star Emmy Award for best cultural documentary category to be held in San Antonio, TX, November 2013. The entire 15 minute video can be viewed at:

CECY TURNER

Watercolor Workshop – January 21 – 22, 2015, sponsored by Farmers Branch – Carrollton Art Association at Farmers Branch Recreation Center, 14050 Heartside Place, Farmers Branch, TX, from 9-4:00.

Cost for two days: $200.

Contact Toni Wengler. Email: twengler@sbcglobal.net. Phone: 214-585-2065.

CecyTurnerRevisiting-Alberta-Falls-largerClass description: Cecy Turner will be teaching a two-day watercolor workshop January 21-22, 2015. Students MAY paint in oils instead of watercolor, but the two morning demonstrations will be in watercolor.

The first day the focus will be on either a waterfall or cascades including some rocks and trees. Techniques will be shown to get the water to flow, spray, splash and throw up mist against the rocks. Lit rocks, reflected light on the rocks and achieving depth from foreground to distance will be stressed. We will concentrate on breaking the scene down to major SHAPES, not more than five or six, before we dive into painting it. Some photos will be provided, but would prefer you bring your own if you have any- you will be more excited about what you’re painting if it’s either a photo you took and have been wanting to paint, or a photo you got somewhere else and cared enough about it to keep it, tear it out, or whatever.

Cecy-Turner-Fall-Ablaze

The second day, students may choose to continue to paint waterfall/ river/rocks, but the morning demonstration will be on painting fall or summer aspen trees. Here we will concentrate on design, making each tree different, good SHAPES for foliage, leading the eye around the painting, opening up a path for the eye, atmosphere and depth in the scene. You might want to check out Cecy’s blog on aspen trees: An Aspen a Day. www.anaspenaday.com. The second day students will receive help with either subject they are painting. A critique of the work done will be given toward the end of the second day. I recommend working on a quarter sheet watercolor paper, unless you never paint that small and would prefer larger. It will be a very informative workshop with a lot of individual help. Class is limited to 15. Supply list will be sent upon registration.
