Black & White, drawings by Johannes Boekhoudt, opens Jan. 14

Join JM Gallery Saturday, January 14, from 5 until 8 for our inaugural show of 2017: Black & White, by Johannes Boekhoudt.

JM Gallery opens its third year with Black & White, an exhibition of drawings by Johannes Boekhoudt. Johannes is an internationally acclaimed artist whose works have shown in galleries and museums in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States. He is best known for large, expressionistic paintings that reveal social injustice and lay bare the suffering and loss caused by hatred, intolerance, and arrogance.

The works in this show explore similar themes, but on a different scale. Here, Johannes offers drawings, primarily in black and white, that are smaller and more personal—but no less expressive and impassioned—and his presence is felt in each forceful stroke. We sense not only the power of their messages, but also the intensity of the artistic and spiritual force that created them. In this way, Johannes exploits the power of drawing as a medium. As he explains: “The pencil gives way to a powerful freedom of expression, which expresses the traces of each movement of the hand. With longing, I dream that this sense of freedom is able to reach those who feel trapped and anxious in a world without freedom.” That dream is realized through the purity and immediacy of the black and white drawings that evoke both the struggles and hopes of life in an often troubled age.

Mike Tabor demo on Western art for LGAA Oct. 12

LGAA Meeting
LGAA MEETING – MONDAY, October 127pm. LGAA Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Shanley House Center for the Arts at 7pm (224 North Travis in Granbury,Texas).
Mike Tabor

Mike Tabor is one of the most respected American western expressionistic artists. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, this third generation rancher began drawing and chasing artistic endeavors at an early age. He began his formal training in 1974 at Tarleton State University. Upon his graduation, he cowboyed on various ranches before settling down to pursue an art career. Mike still maintains the family ranch in Hood and Somervell counties of North Central Texas.

Tabor credits the pop artist of the 1960’s and the impressionist movement to his approach in the breaking of traditional representations of western themes. His work has been best described as “postmodern western.” His concern for light, color, and design becomes an intense emotional interpretation in an effort to create more with less.

A career that began doing drawings for beef cattle publications has expanded into a range of work displaying paintings, sculptures, and assemblages. Tabor has worked with collectors and corporate affiliations from coast to coast, including the home furnishing industry in the U.S. as well as across Europe.
