Encaustic and Paper, beyond collage Encaustic and paper are an incredibly versatile match. This workshop will begin to explore the possibilities of combining a variety of paper types and weights with encaustic medium and paints, as well as pigment sticks and other materials, to create works with a optical depth and luminosity. We will work with dipped and formed papers to create 3 dimensional elements on the surface of our work from just paper and encaustic without the use of armatures. Encaustic imparts an extra strength to paper that will some times even allow for the work to be hand sewn in areas. We will begin by making a few of our own papers through various processes such as rust printing and ink drawing. Students will be encouraged to also bring a variety of found papers and other materials to include in their work. Students do not need prior experience with encaustic painting, but general art making experience is encouraged.

Shayema Rahim and Lesli Robertson open at JM Gallery July 30

shayemarahim

Please join us this Saturday, July 30 from 5 until 8, for an opening reception featuring work by Shayema Rahim and Lesli Robertson.

JM Gallery presents the work of two women who find beauty in unexpected materials. Lesli Robertson fuses concrete and textiles in provocative objects that force us to question the boundaries between brutal strength and refined delicacy. In works featured in this show, Lesli uses detritus from her life and studio, including woven pieces, broken forms, and pieces cut from earlier works to create “Remnants,” a series of new forms that document and comment on the material objects that define the work of her hands.

Shayema Rahim transforms drab wax into brilliantly colored encaustic paintings, full of emotion and spirit, that reveal her passion and let us share it with her. Painting in encaustic combines beeswax, resin, and pigment into deep, complex layers and allows Shayema to create lyrical works whose textures, colors, and patterns evoke the rhythm and tone of music and to express the emotional struggles and joys that have defined her as a person and an artist.

ABOUT JM GALLERY // JM Gallery offers works of art on paper and sculptural forms that engage both the eye and the mind. The gallery promotes artists who create smart, visually compelling work and showcases their art in a space that is inviting and accessible. JM Gallery is committed to working closely with artists as they develop their work and careers and to developing lasting relationships with collectors. In collaboration with area schools and non-profits, they enrich the creative community by teaching artists and collectors about navigating the complex world of art.

Brett DyerTheMend

Brett Dyer was born in Dallas and relocated to East Texas at an early age. After high school Brett attended Kilgore Junior College for two years under a full scholarship for his talents and creativity in art. Brett received a BFA in painting and printmaking from The University of Texas at Tyler and an MFA in painting and intermedia arts from Texas Woman’s University.

Brett currently lives and works in Dallas where he exhibits locally and works as an art professor at North Lake College. He also teaches private drawing and painting workshops at The Encaustic Center in Richardson. He has won multiple awards for teaching and his art. Recently he was named the 2015-2016 Presidential Scholar of North Lake College. He also won a mural competition allowing him to paint a mural in Deep Ellum. He aims to someday own a gallery of his own exhibiting student and upcoming artists’ work. He continues to create in various media and vows to never stop.brett1

Brett says the following about his work, “My work is honest, vulnerable, and raw. Once the paint dries, the painting dies and then transforms to a memory of a moment in time that we existed in. My work is both my shadow and my soul. My work is my life, and my life is my work. They would not exist without each other.

Wash & Wax opens May 21 at Irving Arts Center

washandwax

Wash & Wax: A Collaboration

May 21July 3, 2016

“Wash & Wax: A Collaboration” features artists Virginia Greaves and Leisa Rich. The two have created nine large contemporary quilts,  a massive 25 x 7 foot deconstructed quilt, a simulated car wash entrance and more for a unique exhibition inspired by Leisa’s drive-through car wash photos. It opens May 21 at the Irving Arts Center in Irving, Texas.

An intriguing idea to put the unlikely artists together came to Lauren Bernazza, who was at that time Gallery Director at the Abernathy Arts Center Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, when the artists’ prize-winning — and completely different — pieces were exhibited side-by-side during the 2014 Georgia Artists exhibition.

The main pieces featured in the exhibition – abstract “quilts” that slowly deconstruct – are based on photographs Leisa has taken during her trips through industrial car washes. These images were then translated to fabric through piecing and passed back and forth over a 15-month time period between the two artists who stitched and embellished them into the series of works that represent the “wash and wax” experience. In addition to fabrics, the artists also used recycled shower curtains, 1970s designer dresses, nail polish and more. That these two very different individuals, with such diverse ways of creating — one working in a traditional, 2D technique and the other with sculptural 3D – were brought together, was a uniquely transformative experience for the artists.

About Virginia Greaves
Self-taught quilt maker Virginia Greaves started making quilts after the birth of her first child and grew from making traditional quilts to creating intricate portraits of people and animals using textiles as her medium. Although at first glance her work is often mistaken for paintings, her materials are mostly fiber and thread.

About Leisa Rich
Leisa Rich, trained in the fiber arts, works with non-traditional approaches and conceptual materials and techniques, including 3D printing. She invents new visual realities that make a transformation from one tangible to another through touchable, viewer interactive art works and the creation of transformative, pseudo-Utopian environments that offer a collective human experience.
