Oil and Cotton opened in September 2010. Blending an appreciation of the past with current multidisciplinary art practices, our students are invited to engage in the expressive languages of both music and visual art. Our hands-on classes are taught by professionals with knowledge of traditional and contemporary practice. We provide creative space for education, exhibition, performance and exchange between the public and the art community.

ADULT CLASSES
PORTRAIT WATERCOLOR

with Jay Bailey
Saturday, December 10, 3-6pm
This workshop will explore the use of watercolor and mixed media techniques to render and depict a human portrait. Watercolor has unique qualities which allow for flexible applications and dynamic paintings. We will discuss material considerations such as brushes, papers, surfaces, and paints. We will also cover concepts and methods which will open doors for any level of painter, such as a limited palette and the role of preliminary drawings.

LEATHERWORKING

with Scott Horn
Sunday, January 15, 2-5pm
Learn the basics of leatherworking. Sheridan-style decorative leatherwork is a distinctively American craft traditions, with deep roots in Texas. This class will teach the traditional techniques to turn a strip of raw hide into a finished piece of wearable art.

NEW!!! INTRO TO TEXTILES SERIES

with Sarita Westrup and Analise Minjarez
Thursdays, January 19-23, 7-9pm
In this 6 week Intro to Textiles course students will explore three 2D techniques and one 3D technique through explorations and samples. Shibori – A Japanese term for several methods of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, compressing, or capping. We will focus on exploring four stitching techniques on cloth and dye with indigo. Block Printing – Create graphic repeat patterns on cloth. Carve an image from a rubber block and practice your printing skills. Silk Painting – Use synthetic dyes to paint images on silk cloth. Prep the silk surface for painting and explore basic silk painting techniques and materials such as resist paste, salt, and alcohol. Basketry – Make a three dimensional form using the coiling technique with cotton cord. Make closed and open bottom baskets, and learn to finish the lip of a basket.

HAND EMBROIDERY

Sunday, January 22, 1-4pm
Learn the basics of hand embroidery. Beginning as a decorative art for items worn and around the home, embroidery has grown into being a leading technique of fibers art. This workshop will go through a reference guide of basic introductory stitches and a weave. After, students use these learned stitches to embroider on their given designs. During the designs, we will chat about transferring designs onto fabric, as well as what it is like to embroider different materials.

Marinda is a designer, writer, and teacher. As a 13-time Fairfield Fashion Show participant, she has demonstrated uncommon creativity and versatility in wearable art.

Her accomplishments include a line of patterns, countless magazine and book contributions. television appearances, national ads, several embellishment books and videos, and numerousmuseum and gallery exhibitions. Her work is featured in the art collections of corporations and in the homes of celebrities.

Currently Marinda works with corporate clients designing and consulting on end-users for their product lines.

Cultura Tejida: An Exhibition of Traditional Mexican Embroidery and Textiles

Discover the beauty and artistry of traditional clothing from across Mexico with Cultura Tejida. This collection of embroidered and woven pieces presents a sample of various styles and influences brought by other cultures as well as the environment. Come and experience the diversity that makes up the unique culture of embroidery and textiles of Mexico.

The Oak Cliff Cultural Center will host a reception for the Cultura Tejida on September 26, from 5:30pm-8:00pm with a brief Folklorico performance by Alegre Ballet Folklorico at 6:30pm. Exhibit will be on display from September 18, 2015 – October 23, 2015.

About the Curator
Pedro Perez II, founder and director of Alegre Ballet Folklorico, has been involved in the Folklorico culture for 30 years. Born and raised in Oak Cliff, Texas, Pedro has always had a love for the artistry and beauty of Mexican and Latino Culture. In May 1988, Pedro’s parents found Manuel and Guadalupe “Wally” Godinez and the Ballet Folklorico Hispano de Dallas, thus beginning his career in Ballet Folklorico. In 1993, Pedro went on to establish Alegre Ballet Folklorico. Along with dance and choreography, Pedro has taken on the task of designing and making several of Alegre’s costumes. Outside of Alegre, he has worked with TeCo Theatrical Productions as a costume designer, stage manager, actor, as well as teaching in schools and recreation centers throughout the Dallas / Fort Worth area.
