SEPTEMBER DEMO ARTIST

JUDY CROWE from Glen Rose

Artists Statement:

Judy Crowe

“I loved to draw as child-mostly ladies in long beautiful dresses. At one point, I thought I might pursue clothes design as a career. My mother passed away when I was 17 though and the social worker at MD Anderson helped me so much that I began to seriously consider social work as my college major. It was only later that I was introduced to oil painting and became passionate about learning the skill. ”

“I love the works of the Old Masters but the Impressionist painters are the painters I most admire for their vibrant use of color and their individual brushwork. As it did for the impressionists, everyday subjects inspire me. I love flowers, landscapes, and figurative work. I simply appreciate the beauty of nature. It’s quite a challenge to capture the feel of a time or place on canvas rather than a photo representation. ”

This is going to be another demonstration NOT to miss! Please help us welcome Judy back to Waxahachie!

MAY DEMO ARTIST

RUSTY JONES

rustyjones2 rustyjones1

Texas based artist, Rusty Jones, traces his earliest influence to his grandmother who was the first to place a paintbrush in his hands and encourage his interest in art. He vividly remembers her studio on the second floor of a historic home that once served as a stagecoach stop just outside of San Antonio. She would set up still lifes for him to draw or take him outside where she would set up her French easel and paint landscapes. “She had a crusty, difficult personality and could be as mean as a barnyard billy-goat, but when she began to paint you could see the joy in her face as she glided her brush across the canvas.”

Rusty graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Communications and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas with a Masters of Science Degree in Medical Illustration. He is a Certified Medical Illustrator and a Fellow of the Association of Medical Illustrators. For over three decades Rusty provided highly technical medical art for major pharmaceutical companies, medical product companies, medical journals, surgical atlases and ad agencies.

Rusty’s love of sports led him into sporting art which landed him illustration assignments with such notable magazines as Golf Illustrated, Golf Magazine, the Golf Journal, the Masters Journal and American Way Magazine. He also provided sports art for the Coca-Cola Foods Division for the Summer Olympics, the Dallas Cowboys NFL team and the Dallas Mavericks NBA team.

Now Rusty focuses his artistic skills painting the Western American landscape. Following in the tradition of John Singer Sargent, Julian Onderdonk, Portofino Salinas, Edgar Payne and many other great American painters Rusty travels throughout the country painting the landscapes before him. “Painting outdoors takes passion. Without it the wind, heat, snow and bugs will drive you indoors. I enjoy my time in the studio, but it doesn’t make my heart race like it does when I am outside.”

Rusty is a Master Signature member of Outdoor Painters Society….and a “master” at painting plein air – Please join us for a great evening of art & fun!

FEBRUARY DEMO ARTIST

MICHAEL HOLTER

MICHAEL HOLTER

“Keeping Myself in Check” Waterolor by MICHAEL HOLTER

Michael says, “I think of my work as impressionistic. I like to represent people or places and allow the painting to evolve from the structure of what is recognizable. The challenge is to balance the care needed to make the representation interesting⦠and perhaps believable, with the freedom, looseness and painterly quality that makes painting so unique and expressive.”

Michael Holter NWS, OPS, SWS, SWA

American Impressionist

Texas artist, Michael Holter works in both watercolor and oil. Michael’s work has received numerous awards and recognition and can be found in private and corporate collections in the US and several foreign countries. His current work in two categories: watercolor figurative and oil landscapes (both plein air and studio). Although Michael has been painting most of his life, his work experience spans a wide range of creative endeavors, from art teacher, creative director and businessman in fine art and commercial art. Michael has owned and operated two galleries. Michael holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and an MA in Visual Communication.

Michael is a signature member of The National Watercolor Society, the Southwestern Watercolor Society and The Society of Watercolor Artists. He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Transparent Watercolor Society, The Outdoor Painters Society, the Portrait Society of America and the American Impressionist Society.

“I have been influenced by artists such as Charles Reid, Richard Schmid, Burt Silverman, Frank Webb, John Singer Sargent, Ted Nuttall and many others. Even though I have an art degree, most of what I put into practice is self-taught through studying the work of other distinguished artists and….a lot of painting.”

JANUARY DEMO ARTIST for Ellis County Art Association

FRANCYS FLANAGAN

We’re excited and honored to have our friend & a popular demo artist, Francys Flanagan as our demonstration guest for January.

Artist’s Statement:

“Words, strung like pearls on a page paint a picture. Music tells the soul a story. Colours and shapes on a canvas make the heart sing. Three doors into a magical and lovely place that God’s gift, imagination, allows us to enter. As a child I strolled at will through these doors and lived in that place. As I “grew up”, I never left it.

In 1977 God gave me another gift in the person of artist Dick Turner. Dick gave a fortunate few the tools needed in order to use paint and canvas to take others into that world of beauty and peace. A world that might catch at your imagination and cause you to ask, “What if…..”

From the time I was a small girl I knew I would be an artist. I just didn’t know what kind. I read book after book about painters, musicians, dancers, and writers. Then in 1977, through the chance meeting with artist Dick Turner, I knew that I too would be a painter.

I immersed myself, soul and body, in that pursuit. I studied with Dick from 1977 until 1982, taking 5 and 6 classes a week at his private art school in Houston.
I have also received instruction from William Reese, William Henry Earle, Carolyn Anderson, Greg Kreutz, Roberta Carter Clark, Ray Vinella, Jean Chambers, Scott Burdick and Daniel Greene.”

Francys is not only a superb oil painter and teacher…she’s an absolute joy to watch! Please Join us as we welcome her to ART on the Square!

NOVEMBER DEMO ARTIST

RANDY MEADOR

We’re excited and honored to have Texas western artist Randy Meador as our demonstration guest for November.

Randy Meador says he owes his art career to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. “While reading a Churchill biography in 1991, I stopped and meditated on his words, ‘When I paint, nothing else exists.’ I wanted desperately to go there⦠regularly.” The former marketer and speaker began painting that day.

meadowdayaintover

Meador graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, but initially chose a different career course in a variety of businesses.

“I pestered Buck Taylor (watercolor artist) at a Fort Worth Stock Show in 1992 and asked him who were the best watercolor artists, then proceeded to study all the works of Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Paul Cezanne, and others. They were my early teachers. I figured, ‘why not learn from some of the greats?’ Afterward, I just taught myself by making notes of everything that did and did not work. In the beginning, I think I owned every watercolor technique book ever written, and later it was humbling to find myself competing with many of those authors in juried exhibitions.”

When asked about inspiration for his subjects and technique, he draws what appears to be a sincere blank. “I’m really not sure I know what that means. I simply look for something that interests me and try really hard to render not what I see, but what I wished I could seeâ¦what I want it to look like⦠hopefully without screwing it up.”

Randy is not only a superb watercolor artist and teacher…he’s an absolute joy to watch! Please Join us as we welcome Randy to ART on the Square!
