The Sound of Color Juried Exhibition and Sale

May 19 – June 14, 2018

The Dutch Art Gallery proudly presents “The Sound of Color” a visual celebration of music. https://dutchartgallery.net/uncategorized/the-sound-of-color-juried-show-opening/

This diverse juried show of original fine art features a variety of different media unified by a common theme. Sound and language combined can move our souls. Music has the power to lift us to the heights of joy or bring us to tears. Art has the same power. Each work of art is accompanied by a written explanation of the artist’s thoughts and what song inspired their piece. Forty-seven different artists and 69 works of art are included in this show with styles ranging from traditional to abstract. Each one is a story set to music and each piece sings. Come see how music has uniquely inspired these artists.

A special reception will be held during the official show opening on Saturday, May 19th from 11am-6pm. Those in attendance will be able to meet many of the show artists. The awards presentation will be held at 2pm. Additionally, the first 25 patrons for the opening receive a special “Goodie Bag” that contains a miniature original art piece by one of the show artists. “The Sound of Color” runs through June 14th.

“Row Row Row Your Boat” is a playful painting by artist Leighann Foster. The general meaning of this song is to row through your life in a joyful manner and is one we’ve all come to associate with childhood. To convey that meaning, she’s used colorful stuffed toys as the main subjects. Leighann states, “The song, characters, colors, and humor all tie together for a positive experience.”

Barbara Jones’ expressive still life “Song Sung Blue Again” is inspired by Neil Diamond’s 1972 hit “Song Sung Blue”. Barbara tell us that blue in the song refers to a feeling of sadness, but she has chosen to use the color in her painting to reveal its beauty. She exclaims, “Let art chase the blues away!” “Song Sung Blue” itself owes its existence to Mozart’s Piano Concerto #21 which served as inspiration for Neil Diamond.

LAYNE JOHNSON: “CHASING THE LIGHT” SOLO SHOW reception March 1 & demo March 3

MARCH FEATURED ARTIST
LAYNE JOHNSON | “CHASING THE LIGHT” SOLO SHOW

March brings landscape artist Layne Johnson to the gallery with his solo show and demonstration. Dutch Art Gallery will host a Meet the Artist reception during our March First Thursday Event as well as a demonstration by the artist that Saturday. You can get to know Layne a little better by reading our Artist Spotlight article, but be sure to come by the gallery to meet him and see his work in person, including new pieces. Solo Show on view through March 31st.

A very focused and driven artist, Layne set his sights on making art his career early in life and squarely hit the bullseye. You’ll find him painting on nearly a daily basis though he does “try to take weekends off”. Inspired by the painters of the Hudson River School, Layne’s work is described as a blend of Luminism, Classical Realism with the added touch of American Impressionism. Having transitioned from an earlier hyper-realistic style, his looser painting technique is still quite detailed and depicts light in the landscape skillfully. His primary goal is to capture the beauty and serenity of a particular location to create a “sense of place” and an emotional connection to it. He wants the viewer to be reminded to slow down, take a breath and appreciate the beauty that’s right in front of them.

MEET THE ARTIST RECEPTION | LAYNE JOHNSON
Thursday, March 1st 6-8pm
Enjoy free BBQ, talk to the artist and see new pieces.

SATURDAY DEMONSTRATION | LAYNE JOHNSON
Saturday, March 3rd | 10am – 4pm

Original Paintings by Texas Artist Steve Hahn at the Dutch Art Gallery

Steve Hahn has had a long family association with the Texas Hill Country. The rugged terrain is filled with iconic images of German settlements, ranching and its diverse landscape. Spring-fed creeks emerging from rock formations, cactus-covered grasslands spotted with live oak trees, wildflowers, historic limestone buildings and the changing seasons are the palette for his oil paintings.

Steve was raised in Dallas, Texas where he resides and graduated with BFA from SMU. He worked as a graphic designer and art director for over 30 years. Now retired, his artistic pursuits are inspired by his love for the natural beauty of the Hill Country.

A selection of Steve’s work is currently on view for February. To learn more about the artist, please read our Artist Spotlight Interview.

Rebecca Zook Meet the Artist and Special Showing at Dutch Art Gallery Oct. 28

Rebecca Zook
Meet the Artist and Special Showing at Dutch Art Gallery

Saturday, October 28th From 10am to 5pm

Work On View From October 28th – November 30th

Stop in and see these engaging pieces and don’t miss the opportunity to meet the artist on October 28th.

Peace. Beauty. Light.
Three aspects that Rebecca Zook consciously incorporates into her paintings. As a native Texan, she grew up with an appreciation of the unique beauty that Texas offers. Wandering the trails, playing in the creek near her childhood home and befriending every creature she encountered, Rebecca found a true love in nature. This connection is something that’s remained a part of her throughout her life and this love of the landscape and its inhabitants is expressed through each brushstroke.
