Presents Lecture by

Outstanding Architect/Artist Marc Fornes

Tuesday, 29 March 2016 at Magnolia Theatre

Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization for everyone interested in learning about and improving the architecture, design, landscape and urban fabric of the North Texas region is pleased to continue its 2015-16 Lecture Season with award-winning architect Marc Fornes, whose work intersects the fields of architecture and art. He is the founder of THEVERYMANY™, a New York-based studio engaging Art and Architecture through systematic research and development into applied Computer Science and Digital Fabrication. His prototypical structures and unique organic environments are included within the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France, the Centre National des Arts Plastiques in Sache, France, and in many private collections. He has been exhibited at institutions worldwide including the Guggenheim and has sold work at Art Basel Miami/GGG, Art Paris, Phillips de Pury and Sotheby’s.

Fornes will speak on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Theater in the West Village.

“Marc Fornes is an architect and subject matter expert in computer science who is constantly reinventing the field of Computational Skinning to create large-scale, highly organic and self-supported structures for public outdoor art installations, as well as medium-scaled projects for museum exhibition, retail spaces and personal art collections,” stated Nate Eudaly, Executive Director of the Dallas Architecture Forum. “He was artist-in-residence at the Atelier Calder and his Pop-Up store for Louis Vuitton was awarded an A+ Jury award, as well as the 40th Annual Interior Design Award by the IIDA.  Fornes is a TED Fellow and has been a speaker at many events and institutions including the ArchiLab symposium and MoMA MIND. Together with Francois Roche, he co-created ‘(n)Certainties’, a graduate studio course, at Columbia University, the University of Southern California and Die Angewandte in Vienna. He is currently teaching at Princeton and Harvard Graduate School of Design. With his diverse background in art, architecture, computation, digital fabrication and education, we think Marc Fornes’ presentation will be of great interest to the Dallas community.”

The lecture will occur at 7 p.m. on March 29th, with a complimentary reception beginning at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 per lecture for general admission and $5 for students (with ID). Tickets can be purchased at the door before the lecture. No reservations are needed to attend Forum lectures. Marc Fornes is an architect and subject matter expert in computer science, investigating design through codes and computational protocols. Produced under his label THEVERYMANY™ his extensive body of research – addressing ways to describe complex curvilinear self-supported surfaces into series of flat elements – is constantly reinventing the field of Computational Skinning. As THEVERYMANY™, Marc has designed and built an extensive body of large-scale, highly-organic and self-supported structures situated between the field of art and architecture, including permanent installations in France, Canada and the United States. Some of these have been acquired and are in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou; the FRAC Centre in Orleans, France; and in many private collections. He has exhibited work at the Guggenheim (Contemplating the Void), Art Basel Miami, and Art Paris.

Fornes is a TED Fellow and has been a speaker at many events and institutions including the ArchiLab symposium and MoMA MIND. 2015 AIA Unbuilt Design Awards

safe_image

As public discourse in Dallas becomes increasingly vital to understanding where we are as a city, and where we want to be, the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects seeks to enable continuing dialogue on important issues between the profession and the community. To this end, AIA Dallas has transformed the 2015 Unbuilt Design Awards program into an interactive event and public exhibition featuring new ideas for the future from the architect’s perspective.

The AIA Dallas Design Awards recognizes outstanding work by Dallas architects, both in the metropolitan area and across the country. The purpose of the awards program is to honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence.

The 2015 Unbuilt Design Awards are hosted this year by Mokah Gallery in Deep Ellum.  The exhibition will run through July 11, with a closing reception on July 11 from 6-9pm.  The closing will include a discussion with the winning project teams.

Todd Camplin: Contain Me opens May 16 at Holly Johnson

9385dd53a827bf44d9e329fbbdb9e5bd

Contain Me is a solo exhibition of recent drawings by Todd Camplin at Holly Johnson Gallery. Opening reception is on May 16th from 6 to 9 pm.

Several years back, I came across some of my old package design books. I looked though these books with fond memories of my times as an undergraduate in graphic design. I began testing the idea in a few small sketches, but I put it aside for a while. Recently, I picked these books back up and began placing them as my center piece to my drawings. I use my text elements to flow in and out of the package designs. The flat foldouts of these packages contained my drawings. After several drawings with box designs, I dropped the box element for just my text shapes. I expanded my technique from paper to claybord. Then I came to the conclusion that I should attempt to completely fill the page with my designs. I once again tested my process and then I created several filled drawings that were fully contained on the paper. Each drawing concept lead to another concept and all spawned from my package design templates. website: http://camplinte.com/

PeruvianGoldExhibit_ Press imageWEB

Wari Surface Design Workshop:

Modern Peruvian Design

Presented in conjunction with Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed

 at the Irving Arts Center,
Oct. 4 – Dec. 31, 2014

Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Intricate and historically significant Wari textiles from ancient Peru featuring humans, animals, the natural and the supernatural, as well as colorful, contemporary woven works by Maximo Laura, will be the rich inspiration for this one day surface design workshop with fiber/mixed media artist and instructor, Leisa Rich.

Alter a fabric surface using dyes to create pattern, use stencils you will design and cut during the workshop that interpret Wari designs, then move on to build dimension and simulate a weave structure using hand embroidery, hand sewing and appliqué. Create a unique textile that reflects your modern interpretation of this inspiring culture and its history.

Registration includes supplies as well as a complimentary ticket to the exhibition Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed at the Irving Arts Center.

While materials and art supplies will be provided, participants are encouraged to bring embroidery floss in their choice of colors (6 -7 is suggested) and any miscellaneous fabric from home they might want to incorporate into their design.

Please bring a bag lunch.

Tuition: $75

(Discount for IAC Art Connection Members and Irving Art Association Members: $50)

To register go to www.irvingartscenter.com/ForArtists or call 972.252.2787
