LAYNE JOHNSON: “CHASING THE LIGHT” SOLO SHOW reception March 1 & demo March 3

March brings landscape artist Layne Johnson to the gallery with his solo show and demonstration. Dutch Art Gallery will host a Meet the Artist reception during our March First Thursday Event as well as a demonstration by the artist that Saturday. You can get to know Layne a little better by reading our Artist Spotlight article, but be sure to come by the gallery to meet him and see his work in person, including new pieces. Solo Show on view through March 31st.
A very focused and driven artist, Layne set his sights on making art his career early in life and squarely hit the bullseye. You’ll find him painting on nearly a daily basis though he does “try to take weekends off”. Inspired by the painters of the Hudson River School, Layne’s work is described as a blend of Luminism, Classical Realism with the added touch of American Impressionism. Having transitioned from an earlier hyper-realistic style, his looser painting technique is still quite detailed and depicts light in the landscape skillfully. His primary goal is to capture the beauty and serenity of a particular location to create a “sense of place” and an emotional connection to it. He wants the viewer to be reminded to slow down, take a breath and appreciate the beauty that’s right in front of them.

Thursday, March 1st 6-8pm
Enjoy free BBQ, talk to the artist and see new pieces.

Join us for an interactive demo of Alcohol Inks Jan. 14 in DeSoto

The DeSoto Art League meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month beginning at 2:00 PM and ending at 4 PM at the DeSoto Presbyterian Church at 212 W. Pleasant Run Rd. in DeSoto. Light refreshments provided.

On January 14th, 2017 the Art League will present painting with Alcohol Inks. There are several techniques that will be presented by Julie Danford and Jean Wiley. The inks are quite vivid and are unusual in that they can be applied to non-porous surfaces. This interactive demonstration will have you try the methods on photographic paper and ceramic tile. You will also learn how to make the inks yourself so you can add this technique to your artist’s palette. Consider yourself invited—as a member, or as a guest!

Irma Ward abstract art demo for ECAA Oct. 5

Next Meeting – Monday,Oct. 5th, 2015 at 6:30 PM

ECAA Art Center, 501 West Main Street (Lower Level), Waxahachie, TX 75165

We’re delighted to welcome our friend, Irma Ward as our guest demonstrator. Irma is a multi-faceted artist in that she is equally adept painting traditional, representational art as well as delving into the depths of non-representational – abstract – art. All art begins with inspiration, then design; Irma will share how she translates everyday scenes into a colorful, compelling abstract design.

Irma Ward IrmaWardfish

I am often asked how I get ideas for abstract paintings, and then, how do I put it on canvas. My answer, although somewhat vague, is sincere. I am constantly looking for ideas and inspiration is the shapes and colors of my surroundings. For example, right now I am looking out my window and I see the leafless trees of winter with trunks and branches creating many abstract shapes. The arrangement of these shapes interests me and I plan to use this idea for my next painting.

Irma Ward: Artist’s Statement

I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where the value of a strong work ethic was emphasized in my parents’ grocery store. This is where I learned to trim a side of beef, take inventory, and provide customer service as a check-out clerk; not much to do with art, yet I learned many valuable lessons that I use today. I moved to Texas in a job transfer with American Airlines, and completed my degree in business administration at the University of Texas at Arlington. I’ve always had a love for the arts and have dabbled in painting and crafts while growing up and during my career at the airline. In January 2000, I made a new-millennium resolution to take this interest to a higher level and I embarked on a journey that forever changed my life. After several years of self-teaching, I enrolled in painting and drawing classes at a local college. I was hooked from there on. Finally I had found the job that I really loved; so much so that I retired early from the airline to paint and study more. In the process, I found that I enjoyed sharing my love for painting with friends, family, and co-workers. I studied hard and earned certification as a Fine Art Instructor from Liliedahl School of Traditional Oil Painting. I now teach and paint full time in my North Texas studio.
