CALL FOR ENTRIES | Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition & Exhibition

The Greater Denton Arts Council announces the opening of its 2017 Call for Entries for the 30th Annual Materials: Hard + Soft Contemporary Craft Exhibition. This exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the United States, this year we are thrilled to be partnering with the National Endowment for the Arts to expand this national exhibition to now include international artists. Approximately 70 works will be selected for exhibition by juror JoAnn Edwards, Executive Director of the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, California. Of the works selected, Juror Awards in amounts of $1000, $750, $500, and $250 will be awarded.

OPEN ART NIGHT Exhibit Reception March 15


Open Art Night derives its name from the arts and crafts group sponsored by the Irving Art Association that meets twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Friday evenings at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts. The group is free to join and participate in — contact openartnight@irvingart.org. Members of the group take turns in leading group projects, but artists may actually work on any project they wish to.

“This is a technique savvy class great for a scrapper and card maker alike and fun for both the advanced or beginner.
You will build a pocketed accordion album from scratch. Then make 9 tags to tell your story. I teach some of the famous techniques such as “smash and glue” or the “fold glue and smash”. OK, I have made these names up but they are great techniques for making an album or a card. With the tags you will learn new ways to use tags (tags on a tags), pockets and a slide though. We use burlap, staples, brads, charms, sticks, chipboard, beads and ribbons, yarn and string.”

2015 Materials: Hard & Soft call deadline Sept. 5


Materials: Hard & Soft

February 6 – April 2, 2015

This annual competition and exhibition of contemporary crafts was started in 1987 and is now in it’s 28th year. Recognized nationally, Materials: Hard & Soft attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. Nationally recognized jurors select the show from slides and then award $5000 in prize money. The juror has always selected the winning pieces on-site. A catalog is printed. Many of the artists seen in the Materials exhibitions have been featured in national publications such as American Craft.

Eligible media: Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitted artist. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years (2012-2014) and not previously exhibited at the Center for Visual Arts. Artists must reside in the United States or its possessions.

2014 Award Winners

2014 Catalog


Ana M. Lopez is a metalsmith, educator and decorative arts scholar. Her creative work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and includes a major commission for the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She is the author of the reference book Metalworking Through History: An Encyclopedia, published in the Spring of 2009 by Greenwood Press, as well as numerous other scholarly articles. She organized the 2007 international biennial exhibition of the Enamelist Society, chaired the 2010 Education Dialogue for the Society of North American Goldsmiths annual conference, served as a Beta Site Testing Faculty for the craft textbook Makers: A History of American Studio Craft, and has lectured extensively on her own work. She holds an MFA in Metalsmithing from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and an MA in the History of American Decorative Arts from The Smithsonian Associates and Parsons School of Design. She is currently Associate Professor and Area Coordinator of Metalsmithing & Jewelry at the University of North Texas where she also teaches The History of Crafts.

 Oil and Cotton is happy to announce our partnership with six talented artists and Neiman Marcus. A HUGE thank you to Rachel RushingLily Smith-KirkleyRandy Guthmiller,Jay BaileyAnalise Minjarez, and Sarah Westrup. These good people have worked to create five site-specific window installations in the historic downtown Neiman Marcus building. The windows along Ervay St. and Main St. will open over the holiday weekend. Happy Fourth of July!!!

Students learn an open weave pattern and make a functional bulb basket in one class day. The basket is woven in the round in your lap and takes on a beautiful organic shape and finished with a leather strap for hanging. This is a wonderful beginning level basket weaving class, all levels are welcome.

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the wet-plate collodion process. Through an immersive, hands-on, approach, you will uncover the techniques and knowledge necessary to produce your very own, unique, tintypes, uncovering one of the most significant advancements in the history photography. All levels are welcome, no darkroom experience needed.

Patina x The Color Condition

RAINBOW Installation Art Camp with The Color Condition

Campers will build a streamer structure, transforming Oil and Cotton into a living and breathing RAINBOW environment. Streamer costumes and soundmakers will be made and used in a culminating performance.

Photo Magic with Rachel Rushing
Part magic, part science, this Alt Processes Photography Camp will explore the origins of photographs. Using a combination of low-tech solutions students learn about the creative possibilities that are constantly around us.

Memory Jugs were made in many cultures, but in Victorian times, when amplified mourning traditions took root, they became a folk art phenomenon.  Students will be provided “borrowed memories” as well as a mason jar, plaster putty, paint and trinkets and pottery shards for their memory jar. You are encouraged to bring your own charms. keys, shells and memories to cover your jar. DON’T MISS THIS STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL CLASS!!!






Direct Film Making Animation
Two Day Workshop, June 21-22

Instructor: Steve Crossman from Mono No Aware


In this 2 day workshop students will learn to manipulate the surface of 16mm film using a variety of direct film-making techniques; painting, scratching, collage, and masking in order to create an experimental animation. This workshop is offered in collaboration with the Oak Cliff Film Festival.



June 28, 1-4pm
Learn more about the sensitive relationship between watercolor, the brush, and paper. Explore essential techniques like creating variegated washes and full-bodied strokes to define complex shapes and objects from reality.
July 26, 1-4pm

Explore the use of watercolor and mixed media techniques to render and depict the human form working primarily from photographs.

Come and learn how to make gorgeous cards using Impression Obsession dies and stamps. In this class, we will be building scenes with dies and stamps.
