VAGF Monthly meeting Feb. 13: Color Composition – Annie Royer

Join VAGF members for the monthly meeting on Monday, February 13 from 7-9pm at Expedition Frisco (9073 Berkshire Dr. Frisco, TX 75033).

Come join us to hear about upcoming art events from Tammy Suh Meinershagen, Executive director of Frisco Arts. Followed by demonstration from Annie Royer on Color Composition.

A strong color composition is Annie Royer’s top priority in every project, whether a painting or an interior design project.  Through dialogue and demonstration, she’ll share some of the ways she arrives at a color composition that pleases her.  Because colorways are very personal, bring 5 or so of your favorite colors (tubes of paint, pieces of fabric, whatever is your medium of choice) with which to experiment.

We also will have a mini-critique. Bring a piece of artwork (framing not necessary) and it can even be work-in -progress for a friendly feedback.  We will draw for a prize at the meeting for participating Artists.

Come join in for a fun, creative night.

Members and visitors are welcome.

Geof Kern: Life, Death, Beauty and Garbage, Selected Work Pictures 1987-1997

PDNB Gallery is pleased and honored to present Geof Kern’s second solo exhibition this fall. It will highlight work from 1987-1997. This time frame marks one of Geof Kern’s (b. 1950, New York City) most recognized periods of innovative fashion/ advertising/ editorial photography in his career.  His photographs are conceptual, often including surrealist references. Kern manipulated the medium (pre-photoshop) using multiple exposure, collage, photo sculpture and dioramas that soon catapulted his presence in the commercial photography world. Exhibition runs from September 10th thru October 8th. Geof Kern will be attending the artist reception Saturday, September 10th from 5-8pm.

Nancy Medina: New e-course: Painting Brilliant Colors

Painting Brilliant Colors
The first peek at a new e-course for you!
No sooner had I announced my new e-course yesterday, than the questions began to arrive – and thank you for all the congratulations, too! How long did it take to build Painting Brilliant Colors, my new online class? Nine months and – yes – some of the comparisons do seem to apply, I know what you’re thinking! When will classes begin – soon, this will be my summer course, and we are already working on the next e-course (can you believe it?). Will the material in Painting Brilliant Colors be different from what you’ve seen in my videos and classes? Absolutely, everything, every moment of Painting Brilliant Colors, is all fresh and new. Will this course apply to acrylic painters, too? While all of my demos and lessons will be in oils, I will provide support to acrylic painters via our private Facebook fan page for course members. I paint in acrylics regularly (and love them!) so I’m delighted to share the conversions with my awesomely talented acrylic students. More questions? Take a peek here for more answers!

With all of my 2016 US workshops full, it was high time to kick this flower rodeo into bloom and open my heart, my studio, and all that I can share, with you. A place to breath, create and grow

Hold tight while we put the finishing touches on, polish the sparkly bits and prepare to announce the date. Your new color adventure awaits, but seats will be limited ~ may the flower force “bee” with you!

Known for her bold, impressionistic florals and large container gardens that are immediately eye-catching, Nancy teaches throughout the US and Europe, sharing a loose, bright technique that evokes brilliant color.

Nancy’s love of art and gardening originated on her childhood farm in Scurry, Texas, where her parents were organic gardeners. Her earliest memories are of standing barefoot beneath 11 foot sunflower stalks in her family’s garden. Nancy studied art history and illustration at the University of London, King’s College, Chelsea, and oil painting and color theory at Texas A&M University. Today she resides with her husband and their 4 pugs in Flower Mound, Texas, where she paints daily from Flower Mound Art Studio.

Stuart Allen: Bubble

Although it is child’s play, bubbles reveal the color spectrum that we cannot see. In keeping with Stuart Allen’s exploration with light and color, he has taken another step in presenting the color spectrum by photographing the amorphic shapes against the sky. Each bubble makes visible the color we do not see with the naked eye. Artist reception, Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 5-8 PM. Exhibition will run April 30 – June 18, 2016

Henry Finkelstein opens at Valley House Nov. 14

Henry Finkelstein: Recent Paintings

November 14 – December 19, 2015

Opening Reception:  Saturday, November 14, 6:00 – 8:30 pm

Artist Talk:  Saturday, November 14, 11:00 am

Valley House Gallery is pleased to announce New York-based artist Henry Finkelstein’s 7th exhibition in Dallas.  Finkelstein earned his BFA from Cooper Union, followed by his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1983.  He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to paint in Italy in 1983-84, and was elected a National Academician in 1994.  Since 1996, he has taught at the National Academy of Design in New York.  A residency at Rochefort-en-Terre in Brittany, France, in 1992, and again in 2000, introduced him to this region where he returns each summer to paint its lush gardens, mills, locks, ponds, and vistas.  Finkelstein continues his investigation of color and rhythm, with a dynamic quality largely influenced by the Abstract Expressionists.  Finkelstein states, Unlike strictly abstract painters, I paint mostly from direct observation.  Nature offers me a necessary resistance that I find challenging.  To this day, discovering new color relationships as I paint from nature remains a central focus of my work.

Below is an example of something done in the Color Class workshop.  I will teach Color Organization and its effects on your painting. This workshop is a study of Color and how to use it in all of your paintings. We will take one 4 x 6 drawing and use the 7 color contrasts, one at a time and making sure one of the 7 color contrasts is dominant.  I will demonstrate each one building one upon the other.  The 7 color contrasts are:

  • Pure Color Contrast
  • Contrast of Saturation
  • Contrast of Light and Dark
  • Contrast of Complements
  • Contrast of Cool and Warm
  • Contrast of Quantity
  • Simultaneous Contrast

You will be putting your examples in a loose leaf notebook for future reference. I will hand out a completed explanation and also examples of my previous demos. I will be using Watercolor paints to illustrate, but any medium can be used. This workshop has been very popular and many have repeated it several times.  All levels are encouraged to take this class.
