Beginner Darkroom Classes – October classes & November 13 workshop

trays-dallas-center-for-photography

Beginner Darkroom Classes

Photography can be so much more magical than pixels trapped behind a glass screen. Liberate your images into the real world! You’ll learn to process your own black and white film, make contact sheets, select the best frame for printing and work with an enlarger. Using chemistry and light you’ll create unique prints, completely hand made by you.

This introduction to black and white darkroom is for only two kinds of people; those who have worked in a darkroom and want to get back into it and those who haven’t done it yet! It’s the perfect blend of science and art and as close as you’ll get to alchemy.

Available as a 3 part evening class series starting Tuesday, October 18, 2016 and a one day workshop on Sunday, November13, 2016.

Our new darkroom facility was custom built just for teaching small groups. We have a film processing area, a printing darkroom with 10 enlarger stations, custom sinks, ample air conditioning and ventilation systems, and wise teachers to help you develop your skills.

What to bring: One roll of exposed 35mm or 120 Kodak or Ilford black and white film. No XP-2 or similar C41 process film. If you aren’t sure, write us and ask!

At the end of the Intermediate series you’ll be able to extract objects from complex backgrounds, make photorealistic adjustments to portraits and products, apply advanced techniques to landscapes, assemble panoramas and create HDR images.

Each series consists of four classes. The first three classes of each series are demonstration style, with the instructor taking you through a tour of tools, features and techniques. The last class of each series is a hands-on lab where you’ll work with your own laptop and follow along as you’re shown how to put your new found skills into action. The “Adobe Photoshop CC Classroom in a Book” is required and will provide support and exercises for several of the modules.

  • What are brands really buying from bloggers/influencers?
  • What are editors looking for when they scout for photo content and when is the best time to pitch for new work?
  • How to turn a paid content shoot into multiple content features to benefit your brand.

Next up is Rebecca White (@apleasantlittlekitchen) who will walk you through the way she preps and shoots dishes for her popular blog. She will help you develop a signature “thumbprint” to allow your food styling and photography to stand out amidst the saturation of food media. Rebecca will cover:

  • Styling food in a simplistic, natural way

Photographer Patrizia Montanari (@patriziamontanari) will work with Rebecca, sharing tips and ideas for getting the most out of the setting and lighting to create scroll-stopping photos.

Even lunch is an activity in this workshop. You’ll be provided with fresh local ingredients to build scrumptious and photogenic sandwiches. You’ll photograph and eat your creations while Patrizia and Rebecca demonstrate the basics of photographing food and working with natural light, from preparing to visualizing and styling and documenting each step:

  • What makes a picture impactful and worth posting
  • Using a DSLR and/or an iPhone to take pictures of your food
  • Basics of food photography using a DSLR
  • How to get the best out of available light

Then it’s time to set up your laptop, download your photos and spend a little time selecting and editing your best images. Patrizia will show how to edit your images with Lightroom or iPhone apps. Select images will be gathered for a closing image critique.

studio-lighting-dallas-center-for-photography

Dallas Center for Photography’s 2-day lighting workshop will help you increase the impact and production quality of your images whether you’re building a professional career in photography or just love to shoot recreationally.

We’ll start with an overview of the concepts and hardware of studio lighting. Over two days, together we’ll build and use different lighting setups from simple and clean limbo lighting to more elaborate setups. You’ll learn how and why to lean toward a certain lighting style and then have a chance to build it, shoot it and review the images. What you learn here could be applied to both still photography and video/film production.

Instructor Steve McWilliams has over 30 years in film production and media creation and is known for his depth of knowledge and willingness to share his experience with others. He was a top selling contributor to Getty Images in both still and motion collections and ran a successful still portrait business with an emphasis on high quality images and deft retouching. Steve also has a well known MacGyver-like skill for solving on-set challenges with inventive trickery and hacks.
